Stirlingshire / 1841 look up for the Barrie family please
« on: Sunday 05 March 06 22:42 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can look up the 1841 census for my g/g/grandmother Helen BARRIE please?
The 1881 census says that she was born in Larbert Stirling about 1828.
I havent found her marriage, but she had my g/grandmother in Dec 1848 in Kirriemuir Angus. Her husband was Robert Allardice.
On the birth certificates of some of their children, her name is given as Ellen or Helen BARRET and on the others it is Helen BARRIE.
Robert Allardice died in 1887 and sometime after that, Helen must have gone back to live in Stirling, because she died there in 1916. However, her son who registered the death, gave her maiden name as BARRET and her age as 78 which would have meant that her date of birth would have been 1838, just 10 years before her first child was born.  Also the first names of her parents are missing from her death certificate!
If Helen can be found on the 1841 census, it might solve some of the problems.
Thanks in advance

Thanks Christopher. No Internet Cafes anywhere near here, I'm afraid!
But I'll have a chat with one of the young ones and see if they can help me.  Regards .. Sheila

Thanks Becky, but I am not very good with computers!  I've had lots of family and friends working on it today, and they think the word is Glendye. (It's definitely ye at the end) Not a surname I am familiar with, I'm afraid.  However, it was enough for me to go to scotsorigins to see what I could come up with.  I found a David Stormonth who married a Jean Glenday 27/11/1781 in Kingoldrum. From her age at death, Julia must have been born in 1786/7, so in the right age range.   I imagine that they could be the same as my David Stormont and Jane Glendye. What do you think? ... Sheila

Hi Cal Thanks for the info and the lookups.
It is highly possible that Mary is a relative, so I will keep her in mind.
Looking back at your previous reply, is it possible to get the details on the Stephen Read who was 25?
As there are no other Reads in Winterslow, he must have moved on, so first, I will try the one who was in the county at that time.
500 Reads in Wiltshire in 1841 ... oh my!!  How easy or difficult is it to get a hold of the 1841 Wiltshire census?
I'll probably get it and then find that all my Reads have left the county!!
Thanks again ... Sheila

Thanks Cal, I think that is my Stephen with his son William and his family. I dont think any of the other Stephens are mine though. The 1816 Stephen would have been 24/25, but maybe he was in a different area by then.  Are there a lot of Reads in Winterslow in 1841? If there are only a few, they may all be related. With my usual luck, there will be hundreds, and absolutely impossible to work out!!
Thanks again .. Sheila

I am looking for any info on Stephen Read born about 1780 in Winterslow. He was married to Sarah, and the children that I know about are: Harriott b.1808, William b.1810, Stephen b.1816. William and Stephen junior may be there as well. Any info welcome, Thanks.

Angus (Forfarshire) / 1851/1861 Lintrathen census
« on: Sunday 02 October 05 21:54 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information on my OGILVIE branch of the family.
I have found them in 1841 living with Davids parents, John (55) and Ann OGILVIE (60) at North Shithie, Lintrathen. John was a farmer.
In 1841, David OGILVIE is 31, his wife Betty is 25, and their children Margret (4) Ann (2). There is also a female servant, Helen FALCONER (15), who is Bettys sister.
I would really like to find them in 1851/61. Can anyone help please? Thanks ..Sheilalewry44
