Officers are normally well documented in unit war diaries. These will be at the National Archives.

The MOD only require one of the following -

Date of Birth or Service Number. Both helps but one or the other is all you need.

Perhaps you could drop RAF Records a line explaining that. :)

It does state that on the application form - Perhaps the RAF are making the rules up as they go along in their posh accommodation, with posh food and the best disco in town .....Nothing new there ;)

I collect BEF war diaries and currently have around 800 copied BEF diaries out of the 1447 that are listed at the National Archives. There's only a few pages in this diary with little of note and the month of May is missing from the file, most likely lost of destroyed when the unit was withdrawing towards the North West coast of France to be evacuated.
