Dunkirk is my speciality - What's his name? I may be able to tell you how/where he died.

Definitely Royal Signals - It's my old regiment. He's wearing pre war service dress so at it's latest I would say it was taken in 1940 before the British Army moved to Battle Dress.

Service Records is the only way to see if he transferred to another unit. Earlier service numbers were blocks awarded to certain units but around 1942 or 1943 it changed to a General Service Corps number issued in numerical order regardless of unit.

That's useful to know MaxD thank you. Looks like a trip to Kew!

Drop me a message if the archives is a trek for you.

Later in the war, units within a Division wore the Divisional sign on their epaulettes.

58 is a training regiment. He then went on to serve with the Westminster Dragoons in France ie D-Day and then later on in the war was posted to 3 RTR.

I already have a copy of the original Westminster Dragoons diary for 1944 but I'm not allowed to post anything on here. That said I'm moving house on Thursday so everything is pretty much packed now anyway. Feel free to drop me a message and I can send you the references for all the war diaries covering his service.

Cheers
Andy

The RA Museum at Woolwich closed down sometime ago now.

War Diaries for this regiment will be at the National Archives in London covering the whole of WW2. I only have the Jan to Dec 1942 diary for this regiment.

Have you approached Pen and Sword in Barnsley? They seem to be the military history publisher of choice.
