I have copies of all of the Durham Light Infantry War Diaries for the France and Flanders Campaign and the official regimental histories for WW2 published just after WW2.

I also have the North Staffs war diaries for 1940.

You can get a copy of his service records from Wellington Barracks in London. Let me know if you identify the battalion-I have most of the CG war diaries for WW2.

Your man is listed in the WO 361 file but no circumstances around his death that I could see. The file states the following:

5334008 Pte Childs F. KIA 16/05/1940 NOK Widow Mrs O Childs, 77 Selby Road (or Selly Road) Leytonstone, London E.11.

I've just checked the units war diary and they had already withdrawn from the Dyle and were at Terlaenen in Belgium defending the R. Lasne by the looks of it.

The diary you are after is WO 167/706 1 Royal Berkshire Regt which covers Sept 1939 to June 1940. I would also consider pulling the Missing Men file for the Regt at the National Archives the ref for this is  WO 361/62. The Missing Men files can be a bit scrappy and untidy though.

Seeing that your relative is on the Dunkirk Memorial this means he has no known grave. There are around 4,500 names recorded on there for anyone who served in the France and Flanders Campaign but who's body was never recovered. Some deaths are recorded as late as 1944 and 1945 due to them dying whilst they were a PoW. Looking at the date of his death I would say he died fighting on the River Dyle without checking the battalions diary (Can I post pictures on here?). I have the diary and the missing men file already. I also have a copy Histrory of the Royal Berkshire Regiment by Gordon Blight which covers the regiment in WW2.

At this stage I'm speculating but I would think he may have been buried as his battalion withdrew and his grave location was forgotten or he was a casualty of Artillery or Mortar fire and couldn't be buried.
