Europe / ireland to england
« on: Saturday 29 April 06 05:38 BST (UK)  »
I'm not sure if this is the right place for this post but a friend is trying to trace her ancestors who moved from ireland to england sometime between 1891 and 1901. Is there any way to find what ship they may have travelled on.

The Lighter Side / another cyclone
« on: Wednesday 29 March 06 07:16 BST (UK)  »
This is almost a duplication of a posting under cyclone Larry. But with a new cyclone hitting Port Hedland at this moment, it may be of interest to see the radar image of this in almost real time.
It may be seen at this url

The Lighter Side / the most upsetting mine disaster ever
« on: Wednesday 15 March 06 00:28 GMT (UK)  »
Having come from a coal mining background, I am no stranger to mining accidents, either having been a part of a grieving community or having empathy with a distant mining community.
This assosiation with the grim side of coal mining doesn't make tragedy any easier - if anything it is a more personal thing and always brings a lump to my throat.
For all this, nothing hit me as much as the story I found while researching, I was absolutely horrified to learn of a disaster at silkstone in 1838, the Huskar mine disaster claimed the lives of 26 children bettween the ages of 7 and 17.

Enough said except that to read the following accounts may upset some people - but we must be forever thankfull tht these conditions are not present today - at least in  our society.

Photograph Resources, Tips, Tutorials / scanning
« on: Tuesday 14 March 06 06:54 GMT (UK)  »
Having seen some of the problems people have with scanning photo's for restoration purposes I thought it may help to have a reference table.
I have drawn up what I think would be a good starting point, However before printing a copy out and pinning it next to your scanner, it may be worthwhile leaving it on here for a few days so that the experts can see if it may want any modifications.
        Any comments please.

Want to see what photoshop can really do, then have a look at this site and watch the movie or at least read about it - the DC10, the car - indeed most of the movie was a falsification done mainly with photoshop.
