Armed Forces / Re: two headed bird, i think peacock. ww1 or before

To me, with those beaks, those look more duck-like than other-bird-like.  Or swan-like.  More of a bill than a beak.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Father's name?
« on: Friday 22 May 15 22:59 BST (UK)  »
.... he appears as the reputed father of another child in the same parish a few years before.

I'll go with what everybody else seems to think it is too.

Bit of a go'er wasn't he!  Town stud.

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Re: What was happening in Guernsey in 1861?
« on: Tuesday 19 May 15 08:41 BST (UK)  »
There was a mass migration to the area to build the harbour and infrastructure for that.  After Guernsey they moved over to Jersey to do the same.  I've some that did that work.

"The larger main harbour was built in successive schemes between 1835 and 1909"

Dorset / Re: Accidental death Mrs. Rose

The Library at the Triangle in Bournemouth has a full set of papers from 1900.... of course, that's not very helpful if you're nowhere near that.  But they're not online.

Did they move or stay afterwards?

Have you trawled those sites with schools on them, e.g. friendsreunited?  You might be able to find other people you knew who are contactable/approachable enough for you to ask if they've any idea.

Facebooked his name?  Even if there are a few you might recognise him in some way from the photo (some people don't change too much).

Using freebmd, looking forward, looks like the father remarried in 1966 and died in 1969, aged 49.  No children on that site from the second marriage, which was in Poole.

The Lighter Side / Re: How did you find Rootschat?

I was randomly googling my GGM's name and found an active member here that was my GGM's brother's grandson. So then I stayed and read around ..... and joined.

The Common Room / Re: Campaign to Open Historic Registers

Signed.  I'm fed up with knowing there's loads of data that I pay to keep/hold ... that I can never access due to distance/cost/time/wearisome Jobsworths.

I do agree.... on the other hand I'm somebody who relies entirely on random searches/finds and freebies online.

Genealogy is a very expensive hobby - but us poor people are also interested....

Now, I'll gather my information and make assumptions ..... because I can't afford the cost of originals to check, or any part of proper research.  But I'll always state that my information isn't documented.... maybe somebody will see something and get a "lead" for their own official research.

If I had the money I'd love to be able to gather the evidence.... but that's simply not an option unless somebody contacts me to say "Hey - found your GG-Grandfather and he's a multi-millionaire who has left money in his Will to any GG-Granddaughter who wears odd socks on Wednesdays" because that would be me :)

Don't knock poor people .... we can't help being poor.

On the other hand, people should NOT steal information online, but document their source just to help others on their way by pointing them towards narrowing down which might be certificates worth pursuing.
