Technical Help / Downloading Army Info using Ancestry/Library edition?
« on: Wednesday 04 September 13 11:28 BST (UK)  »
My current access to ancestry is in my local library.

My trusty memory stick has been shuttling information (and parish records, and census forms) home for a few weeks now.

"Save to my computer" is my friend.

But I recently hit a problem. I was trying to save a (heavily degraded) army service record.

The main API said "cannot ., since it hasn't been indexed" (or something similar)

So I went to the browse view and used "right click, save image" in IE.

But the document browser is evidently using an Ajax tiled technique, since all I got was small image tiles or varying sizes, showing only part of the document on the (temp) Z:drive.

So - how do I save the army image files for later use and my archive?

The Common Room / Getting good quality photos of reference material in libraries?
« on: Wednesday 21 August 13 14:51 BST (UK)  »
I'm something of a computer/digital camera buff. At home I have a decent flat bed scanner, and a handy tripod (Benbo) that can be configured to point the camera straight down.

This all make gathering data from books for later reference quick and of high quality.

But if I'm visiting a friend, relative or (especially) a library, can anyone recommend a way
of getting decent quality photographs of book (and other document) pages?

Just hand holding the camera tends to have motion blur.

I suspect I need some kind of wire frame copy stand, but there's no obvious portable design.

I certainly can't stroll into a library and set up one of these:

My camera's are good quality point and shoot; Canon A630, Pentax TZ8

Any suggestions?

London and Middlesex / Trying to decode an illegible address
« on: Monday 12 August 13 11:47 BST (UK)  »
I have a badly written address from 1903.

It's an 8 character road name in Stamford hill.

The lettters I am most confident on are:
Gl.a...t

My best guess is:

Gleavast

But that doesn't exist, and to be honest, the second half of the name is a bit of a trailed off scrawl.

All assistance gratefully accepted.

The Common Room / Desperately seeking Shanko
« on: Tuesday 25 June 13 09:51 BST (UK)  »
I've been doing my own geneaological research, and had hit a couple of road blocks - people I couldn't get beyond.

I'd searched the "obvious" places (ancestry, LDS, FreeBMD, findyourpast).

I then searched the "general web" via google.

And found that "Shanko", on this forum was clearly closely related to my tree, and that (further) she had clearly researched it.

I would VERY much like to contact her; from her posts here, I know she's called Shanon lives in Adlaide, is a bell ringer, and has even written a genealogy pamphlet for schools.

Here's the "killer" post:

Shanko's Gt Gt Uncle is also my SO's Gt Gt Uncle.

If anyone can help, I'd be really grateful.
