Hello, my Grandad John Ridge is sat down in the photo with his pals John Mahoney and Tommy Coyle. He joined the KOSB aged 19 in 1928 and this photo is very special to my Dad and I. Sadly it is creased and seen better days. If anyone can work some magic on it then I would be most grateful. Thanks Carolynn

The Common Room / National Archives Land & Emigration Commission

Please can anyone help check out some info. at the National Archives Kew?

My ancestor Joseph Ridge and his wife Mary (m.s.Glynn) went to Western Australia as assisted emigrants under the auspicies of the UK based Land & Emigration Commission(also known as the Colonial Land & emigration Commission). These are the details:-

Joseph Ridge (b1845) age 24, left London aboard the 'Hastings' in April 1869 and arrived in Australia 26/7/1869. Mary Glynn (b1848) age 20, left aboard the 'Tartar' in Oct 1867 and arrived in Oz Jan 1868. They married in Fremantle WA 22/8/1869 but there is no birth date or birth place mentioned but I do have names of parents. The couple are also mentioned in the book 'The Bicentennial Dictionary of W.A pre 1829-1888'.

I've been told that the Commission held details on passengers who emigrated so hopefully there's a chance of confirming their birth date, place and parents. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I'd like to know why my ancestor Joseph Ridge and his wife Mary (m.s.Glynn) were sent to Western Australia as assisted emigrants under the auspicies of the UK based Land & Emigration Commission(also known as the Colonial Land & emigration Commission).

They married in Fremantle WA 22/8/1869 and had 1st child 15/6/1870.

I believe that both of them were from Ireland so any info. to confirm birth date, place and parents would be much welcome. Thanks. :)

Hi Sue,
Thanks for the links. Unfortunately, I don't know the exact year they left Australia. The 1st child was born 1870(Fremantle),the 2nd child was born 1872(Rottnest Island) and a 3rd child was born 1878 somewhere in England. Bit of a gap there. Also looked at the Rottnest Island link which was interesting. Looks really nice there. Great for a holiday. Wonder what it was like back in the 1870's.

As for Joseph Ridge,he arrived per ‘Hastings’ 26.1.1868, married 22.8.1869 (Fremantle RC) and his wife Mary Glynn arrived per ‘Tartar’ 14.1.1868. Was it usual for people to travel to Australia on their own in those times? I don't believe they were convicts so did they travel for work? Carolynn

Dear Sue,
Thank you for the information link. It looks like their ages should be recorded but unfortunately the year 1869 is too early to show their place of birth. It was worth a try. Do you also happen to know if there are online passenger lists for people leaving Australia? Thanks.

Hi John Bell,
A while back you helped me with some information re: Joseph Ridge and Mary(m.s.Glynn).
You mentioned "The Bicentennial Dictionary of W.A pre 1829-1888, Vol IV, R-Z." and said that Joseph was born 1845. Did it mention WHERE he was born? I believe it was Ireland but don't know which county. Did the book mention anything about his father Peter Ridge? He was a farmer who was born abt.1820 and died sometime before 1881. He married a Mary/Bridget(m.s.Welsh).

Also, would Joseph's marriage (Fremantle 22/8/1869) tell me where and when he was born?
I would be very grateful of any help you can give me. Thank you. Carolynn

Thanks MonicaL for tip on surname variation. Not sure if it's a sibling, still researching but I'm open to the idea of a name change i.e. Glen to Glynn to either Glennon or McGlynn! She died age30(1878) so born 1848.
I do have Mary Glen's(Glynn) mother's maiden name. Have you seen this post dated 30/4/2013?
MARY GLEN-Can you read her maiden name or cause of death?

Thank you for your reply. You are correct in thinking that Mary Moylan(m.s.Ridge) is the daughter of Joseph Ridge and Mary Glen(Glynn). Mary Moylan's mother died in Glasgow, Scotland in 1878 at the age of 30. The daughter, according to records, seems to be Mary Agnes Ridge and born in May 1878(or 1877) in England. This I can't find! This daughter ended up in Glasgow(1881&1891Scotland
census)and then went to Boston with her sister Bridget and later married George E Moylan. I did spot a passenger list entry for a Mary Ridge b.abt.1877(Galway)who dep.Glasgow and arr.July 1897 in Boston,Mass. at age 20. This fits in so maybe I'll check for an Irish birth. Also, thanks so much for the death information for Mary Moylan mentioned in the 1947 Boston city directory.
(Moylan, Mary (Mrs. Geo. E.) died Oct. 8, 1946) That was a great find!
