Richard Osman is well known in the UK for co- hosting the Quiz show 'Pointless'. He has just ventured  into writing novels. His first one called 'The Thursday Murder Club' was a huge hit here in the UK

Sue Perkins, Richard Osman, Matt Lucas, Anna Maxwell Martin and Ralf Little

I have been looking at the family and found all the same records. What is a mystery though is....if it is 'our' Mary who married James Poole, why is she buried as Mary Galloway and not Mary Poole?

Peshaw is near Fatfield, which is William's residence on the marriage to Elizabeth Dawson. Says all three born Fatfield in 1851.
William born Washington in 1861
Goodness knows what it says in 1871.

After son George Dawson came daughter Maria

I think this is the William who married Elizabeth Dawson.
William (aged 14) is on the 1841 census H0107/299/13/12/19

I don't think it was the case that his family couldn't look after him, but simply - for some reason - changed their name to from Beaudin to WARD.  Ward was Fred's grandmother's maiden name. 

I just wonder why Fred James Ward gives his religion as Presbyterian on his marriage when all the family seem to be Roman Catholic

You have done some amazing research there Ladyhawk. I have been following it carefully and it does make sense. I see a lot of the females in the same families have 'Marie' or 'Mary' as their first name so it would make sense that to avoid confusion they use their middle name.
