Completed Census Requests / 1891 Look-Up Request - Evelina Poyser
« on: Saturday 01 May 04 12:31 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Would anyone be kind enough to look for my Gt-Grandmother's sister Evelina Poyser on the 1891 census for me please?  I believe that she will be in the Liverpool area.

EVELINA POYSER, aged about 23 years, born Luddington, Lincolnshire.
Husband is RALPH ERNEST POYSER, aged about 21 years, born Chorley, Lancs.

They married in 1890 in Liverpool, and were still there is 1901.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Sasha.

US Completed Requests / Query re. emigration to U.S.
« on: Monday 26 April 04 21:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I think that I may have found an ancestor who emigrated to America from the USA, but I'm not sure how to go about proving it is him.

I have a JOHN KIRK born c.1818 in Eastrington, East Yorkshire.
From the birth of his one known son, Ferdinand, his wife was CHARLOTTE.  I have lost this couple from the 1851 census onwards when their son was living with his grandparents.  I had assumed that they had died, but am now wondering if I have found them on the 1880 U.S. census.

On the 1880 U.S. census for Paterson, Passaic, N.J., there is a John Kirk born c.1818 in England whose wife is Charlotte born England c.1819, and also a James Kirk born c.1842 England.  The 1870 census for Paterson is on rootsweb and lists a John Kirk aged 53 and a James Kirk aged 27 both from England (no Charlotte mentioned).  I've checked the IGI and there is a baptism in Coventry for a James Kirk in 1844 to John and Charlotte Kirk.

If this is my John Kirk he could have emigrated anytime between 1845 and 1870.

Can anyone suggest a way forward?

Regards,
Sasha.

Completed Census Requests / 1891 Census Look-Up Seraphine Kirk
« on: Sunday 25 April 04 14:59 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Would anyone be able to look for the 1891 census entry for SERAPHINE KIRK please?

Seraphine was born in Belgium (but is a British subject) c. 1839 and should be around 52 years old in 1891.  In 1881 she is in London with her husband FERDINAND KIRK, and I have her death in 1896 in Surrey.

Thanks in advance,
Sasha.

Armed Forces / Researching military history
« on: Wednesday 21 April 04 22:13 BST (UK)  »
I have just discovered a family member listed as a soldier on the 1881 census with the Reg Life Guards, Regents Park Barracks, London - details below:

Job REVILL, soldier, unm, age 21, born Gainsboro, Notts, occupation trooper

By 1891 Job was a steel worker and living in Scunthorpe.

From http://www.thelifeguards.co.uk/  I have discovered that between 1881 and 1891 the Life Guards saw action in Egypt (1882) and Sudan (1884).

I don't live close to London so can't get to the PRO, and have never researched military history before.  Can anyone suggest how to go about finding out more?

Sasha.

Completed Census Requests / 1871 Census Look-up Request Lincolnshire
« on: Saturday 17 April 04 18:11 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching my husband's family which has Gypsy ancestry - his Gt-Grandmother was a SMITH (sorry  :().  I have a conflict on her fathers name and am hoping to find her as a child on the 1871 census to solve this.  I'm looking for:

SARAH ANN SMITH born c. 1870/1871 in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, daughter of either RABBI and DELARINA SMITH or PHILISTIA and EMILY SMITH.

Facts known:

1881 Census Dawsons Court, Lincoln - SARAH A. SMITH, age 10, born Gainsborough, parents listed as PHILISTIA SMITH (male) age 46 born Keadby, Lincoln and EMILY SMITH, age 40, born Toft Lincoln.

1891 Census Gainsborough - SARAH A. SMITH, age 20, born Gainsborough, deaf and dumb, parents listed as RABBI SMITH (male) age 36, born Nettleham, Lincoln and DELARINA SMITH (female) age 40, born Nottinghamshire (unable to make out placename).

Sarah was deaf and dumb, and on her marriage certificate her father is named as RABBI SMITH so the 1891 entry checks out.  In 1881 Rabbi and Delarina are living a couple of houses away so Philistia may be Sarah's grandfather?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Sasha.
