The Common Room / What date was Ascension Day 1863?
« on: Tuesday 27 February 07 10:42 GMT (UK)  »
I've just received my 2xGt-Grandparents marriage certificate this morning.  The date of their wedding is given as 'The Ascension Day' 1863.

Can someone point me in the right direction to find out what the actual date of their wedding was?  I believe Ascension Day is 40 days after Easter Sunday.

Thanks,

Jo.

Partial index to the Scunthorpe Star newspaper (under all its various names) for the period 1891 to 1945.  It seems to be mainly marriages, deaths, obituaries and covers Scunthorpe and the surrounding area.

Not complete yet but has surnames up to the letter 'R' - indexes can be searched online in PDF files.

There is also an online form to order copies with details of costs.

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Jane MARSHALL/DOUGLAS - Census Look-up Please
« on: Sunday 08 October 06 13:31 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone let me have 1851, 1871 and 1891 census info for Jane Marshall (married name Douglas) please?

She was born c.1831-1834 in Keelby.

In 1853 she married Munby Douglas in Patrington ERY and in 1861 is aged 35, living in Out Newton, Easington, ERY with her husband, son Edward Douglas (aged 6 born Partrington ERY) and her sister Harriet (my direct ancestor).

In 1881 she is aged 50 and is back in Lincolnshire, living in East Halton and working as a housekeeper to William Jobson - she states that she's married but I'm not sure if that shouldn't read widowed?  ???

In 1901 she is aged 70, still in East Halton and living on her own means.  I believe I've got her death in 1907.

Thanks for any help.  :)

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Hezekiah Dady - census look-ups
« on: Thursday 14 September 06 09:53 BST (UK)  »
I'm hoping you kind folks can help me and my son with a project.

My son is learning about the Victorians and Queen Victoria at school and is getting really interested in history, so we have decided to do a project at home for him to take in and show his class.

Basically we decided to pick an individual from the Lincoln area and track him through the Victorian era, and then produce a timeline showing imprortant events for this period and then place him, and the events in his life, on to this timeline, and hopefully to find out a bit of 'social history', perhaps about occupations or where he lived.

I looked through the 1881 census last night, and we have come across Hezekiah Dady, who ticks all our boxes and has a wonderful name as well.  There's no family connection to him - we're just adopting him for a while (if he belongs to anyone I hope you don't mind us temporarily borrowing him  ;)).

From looking at the indexes he appears to be in Lincolnshire on all the census returns from 1851 (when I think he's Zeckeriah Dady), through to 1901.  I've got the 1881 info but would be really grateful for the details of the other census returns.

What I know about him so far is:

Hezekiah Dady, baptised 25th Dec 1850, Welton, parents John and Sarah Dady.
1876 married Rhoda Annie Smith in Islington
1881 census - aged 31, living Waddington Road, Bracebridge, attendant at asylum (think this will be Bracebridge Heath Lunatic Asylum), wife Rhoda aged 31 born Ashley, Cambridge, children Ellen E. (3 yrs), Herbert (2 yrs), Walter (6m) all born Bracebridge.

Sorry for such a long post and thanks for any help.

Armed Forces / Medal Cards - request for help
« on: Friday 08 September 06 16:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've found mention of a Rabbi Smith on the National Archives site and I think he may be part of my husbands family.  Looking at the medal cards index he's mentioned twice.

Once with the following regiments:

Lincolnshire Regiment 19112 Private
Leicestershire Regiment 35743 Private
Army Service Corps T/368136 Private
Labour Corps 11798 Private

Date 1914-1920

Series War Office: Service Medal and Award Rolls Index, First World War
Piece Shadbolt E - Spratt C

Secondly, there's a seperate entry just for the army service corps, but this time his rank is 'Driver':

Royal Army Service Corps T/368136 Driver

Date 1914-1920

Series War Office: Service Medal and Award Rolls Index, First World War
Piece Women's Services, Distinguished Conduct Medals and Military Medals

Before I go ahead and spend any money on viewing these, would the second medal card where he is a Driver give additional information, or would it all be contained on the first one I've listed.

Also, it is usual for someone to serve in so many different regiments?  ???

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jo.

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Census look-up - Louthin (part 2)
« on: Tuesday 05 September 06 11:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I wasn't sure whether to post this on the Middlesex or North Yorkshire board.

I'm trying to track two 'Louthin's' who were born in London but seem to have moved to North Yorkshire.  I'm hoping that I can prove a connection between them.

I've already asked for information on Eleanor Louthin on a previous post.  I'm hoping to connect her to Thomas Patterson Coburg Louthin, and to find him on the 1861 and 1871 census.

In 1851 he is living in Chelsea, aged 34 (so born c.1817 in London), married to Sarah Susanna (born c.1824 Marylebone).  His children include Eleanor Harriet Louthin (born c.1850 Marylebone) and Augusta Matilda Louthin (born c.1855 London) and also two sons who unfortunately die prior to the 1861 census.

I don't know where they were in 1861 but there is a death for Augusta Matilda in 1870, Auckland, Durham and for Thomas Louthin in 1873, Leyburn (from freebmd), so it looks like they moved up north sometime between 1851 and 1870.

There is a possible for Thomas listed on the 1871 census index - Thomas Lougharn, born 1817 in London and living in Yorkshire, married to Mary.  I can't find Thomas 'Lougharn' listed for any other year so wondered if this is a mistranscription of Louthin.

Any help in finding Thomas Louthin in either the 1861 or 1871 census would be much appreciated.

Hi,

I wasn't sure whether to post this on the Middlesex or North Yorkshire board.

I'm trying to track two 'Louthin's' who were born in London but seem to have moved to North Yorkshire.  I'm hoping that I can prove a connection between them.

Firstly I'm trying to track Eleanor Louthin pre 1871.  She was born in London but in 1871 and 1881 is a ladys maid in the household of Arabella S. Chaytor of Spennithorne Hall, North Yorkshire - Arabella is the widow of Christopher William Carter Chaytor.  Eleanor Louthin died in 1882.

In 1861 I think she is already a servant for the Chaytor's?.

I'll put a seperate post up for the second person I'm looking for.

Thanks for any help.

Jo.
