« on: Saturday 31 January 09 17:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, would anyone have an index which would give the parish that the following marriages took place in?

I believe that it's a double marriage.

Dec qtr 1859
Meranuel Booth to Okey Smith
Mary Ann Smith to Magnus Smith

Thanks for any help.

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Tennant Smith, North Aston, 1798
« on: Tuesday 20 January 09 23:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I’ve had a Eureka moment tonight, but it has led me to a brickwall.  It concerns a Smith travelling family who ended up in Lincolnshire, headed by a Tennant Smith, who seemingly originated in Oxfordshire sometime around 1793, going from his age at his burial.

One of his children’s baptisms (from freereg) was:

Cornelius Smith s/o Dis Eagle Tenant and Beech Annie Smith, 7 Feb 1836, Nether Heyford, Northants, vagrant gipsies

I’ve been pondering over ‘Dis Eagle’, and tonight made the connection to a snippet I found from the Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society on a google book search:

(JGLS 1926 p.24) Ezechiel Tennant Smith son of a travelling man and woman baptized at North Aston Oxon June 3 1798 is the earliest Gypsy instance I know…..

I’m pretty sure that ‘Dis Eagle’  should read ‘Ezechiel’.  So, off to the IGI to check the baptism and sure enough there it is, an extracted entry for Ezekiel Tennant Smith, but no parents named.

Now, with neither of the sources naming any parents I’m pretty sure that the original entry does not either, but would someone please be able to check, just in case.

(And in case you’re wondering about ‘Beech Annie’, the name generally seems to be listed as Bechina, and she was buried as Bettina).  ::)

Thanks for any help,

Jo.

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Radford PR's - Loversuch, Bramley and Major
« on: Thursday 15 January 09 14:57 GMT (UK)  »
Just wondered if anyone had access to the parish registers for Radford, and could help me with any further information on the following?

I’ve been looking at my OH’s family, and have finally (I think) managed to unravel the tangled mess left by his GGG-Grandmother and the jumble of surnames.

She was Ann Ward, born c.1800 at Stafford if she is to be believed on the census returns, and somehow makes her way to Radford where all the following takes place.

On May 18th 1823 she married William Loversuch.  I’ve found two children on freereg, Emily born 1828 and Amos born 1830.  The IGI says Emily died 1829.

I assume William must also have died after this as on Jan 23rd 1834 Ann Loversuch marries Edward Bramley.

On Oct 9th 1836 a son is baptised, Thomas Bramley, son of Ann Bramley, lace runner.  No father is mentioned, but Thomas uses the surname Major throughout his life.

May 7th 1839 Louisa Major is born, I have her birth cert.  She is the daughter of Ann Bramley and George Major.  George’s occupation is higgler.

1841 census, Lenton, Radford:
George Major 25 lab y
Ann Major 40 n
Louisa Major 2 y
Thomas Major 5 y

Her son Amos Loversuch from her first marriage is seemingly alone in the workhouse aged 10.  :'(

There is a death for George Major in 1842, and a birth record in the Dec qtr 1842 for an Isiah Major Bramley.

There is a further son born in 1845, he is on freereg as Peter Bramley, and possibly on freebmd as Philip Major.  Again, no father is mentioned on the baptism and he uses the name Philip in later life.  On the 1851 Ann is using ‘Liversidge’ as a surname, is a widow and children Amos, Louisa, Isaac (Isiah) and Philip are with her.  Louisa uses the surname ‘Liversedge’ when she marries in 1866. Ann reverts back to Bramley as a surname.

What I don't know is:

a)   When her husbands William Loversuch and Edward Bramley died (if indeed they did die)?
b)   Is there any further information in the baptism records of Louisa Major and Isiah Major Bramley (I have the baptisms of the other children from freereg), or indeed any baptisms of other children?
c)   Is there any further information in the burial record of George Major who died 1842?

Such a confused mess!  ???  My OH’s direct ancestor is Thomas Bramley/Major, and I don’t know whether his father is Edward Bramley, George Major or someone else entirely.

Thanks for any help.

The Common Room / 'Servitor' on census - what does it mean?
« on: Tuesday 13 May 08 20:13 BST (UK)  »
I think I've found a relative on the 1861 census at St. Johns College and Grammar School in Hurstpierpoint (RG9/583/69) - Arthur Kirk, born 1847 in Marylebone.  I've found an A. Kirk aged 13 and born in London on this census.

All the scholars are listed, aged between 7 and 16 years old.  Then there are twelve further boys listed who are aged between 9 and 15 years old, so the same age as the scholars.  However these boys are listed in the relation column as 'servitors' - Ancestry has transcribed them as servitors (waitor).

Arthur was orphaned at the age of 3 and went to the Infant Orphans Asylum at Wanstead.  At the age of 7 boys were transferred from there to another orphanage and I lost track of him then until the 1871 census.

What exactly does a servitor mean?  Do you think he was a kind of 'charity' scholar, working for his bed, board and education at the school, or was he just some kind of servant?

If he did have an education he certainly didn't make any use of it as he's just a general labourer on all the other census returns, and is in the workhouse on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census.

« on: Wednesday 30 April 08 16:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've decided to start tracing my MIL's family - could anyone find these people on the 1901 census for me to start me on my way please?

Arnold Cox, born 1900/1901 (think he'll be a few months old on the 1901), father John William Cox, labourer - Ulceby area

Thomas and Alice Park(e)s (transcribed as Parker I believe), living in Ulceby - Thomas born c.1866 and Alice born c.1870/1.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,

Could anyone help out with census returns for 1841, 1851 and 1861 for ROBINSON BARNARD please?

I have Robinson Barnard born c.1802 at Ellerton by Bubwith, died 1867.

He married Ann Tompson in 1826 at Bubwith.

Known children (all born in Bubwith) are:

Ann, 1827
Hannah, 1830
Charles, 1833
Robert, 1836
William, 1841
John, 1843
Louisa, 1846

I'm hoping the earlier census returns might lead to some clues to his parents, John and Ann Barnard who are my ancestors.

Thanks for any help,

Jo.

Lincolnshire Completed Look up Requests / 1881 Look-Up - Sleight, Grimsby
« on: Friday 29 June 07 09:58 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for a Michael SLEIGHT, born c.1831 in Barnetby-le-Wold.  I think I've found him on the IGI, but mistranscribed.  Could anyone check out the actual image for me please?

On the IGI there is a Michael Slight, aged 30 (but his wife Hannah is 47), born at Barnaby.  I can see how Barnaby could be Barnetby, but I'm hoping his age is actually 50 and not 30.  On the 1881 he's living at Nelson Street, Grimsby.

Thanks for any help,

Jo.

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Census look-up request - HARE
« on: Friday 02 March 07 11:15 GMT (UK)  »
I posted a request for some census look-up's relating to this family to this earlier this week, which Geoff E kindly answered.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,217241.0.html

This has led on to some more names and I'd be very grateful for some more census info if anyone would be so kind.

1871 census - John HARE, born c.1799 Ludford, and his wife Elizabeth, born c.1805 Thornton Le Moor.  John is variously described as an ag lab and a cottager, and in 1861 they were at South Owersby.  I believe John died in 1875 so this would be the last census he appeared on.

1841 and 1851 census - Andrew and Frances HARE (John's parents).  Andrew HARE was born c.1775 in Nettleton.  I suspect Andrew died in 1849 and Frances in 1859.  I have no further details on Frances and would love to find either of these two on a census.

Any help very gratefully received.

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / 1841, 1851, 1861 look-up please - HARE
« on: Tuesday 27 February 07 10:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Could anyone do me a look-up on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census please for my 2xGt-Grandmother HANNAH HARE?

I've just received her marriage certificate in the post this morning so I now know her fathers name.

Hannah was born c.1831/32 - from later census returns she gives her birthplace as Owersby.  Her father is JOHN HARE, cottager.

Hannah married in 1863.  Her occupation is servant and she is 'of full age'.  Her residence at the time of her marriage is hard to read but appears to be 'North Fulholme in Owersby', as is her husbands, Robert Lowman.  I've been looking on a map of the Owersby area and believe this may be North Gulham.

Thanks for any help,

Jo.  :)
