The Common Room / What are other names for "Ellen"?
« on: Tuesday 13 October 20 00:58 BST (UK)  »
What are other names for "Ellen"?  I'm trying to find an "Ellen Garth" who was born in Lancashire (probably around 1816), shows up in Montreal, Quebec, Canada when she marries Peter Cooper in 1841.  I can't find any records about "Ellen" Garth before her marriage in Montreal (either in England or in Montreal).  Interestingly, my 4x g-grandfather was a witness at her marriage and the baptism of her daughter Ann (but none of the other children).  I can't find the connection between the Ellen and George.  Maybe they're related or maybe George Garth shows up as a witness because Peter Cooper was employed at George's business.

It might help with my searching if I knew what names could be associated with "Ellen" (nicknames, short forms of names, is Ellen short for anything...).

Thanks!

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Looking for death of Sarah Bowling nee Jackson
« on: Saturday 12 October 19 22:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I can't find the death of Sarah Bowling nee Jackson.  She married William Bowling in 1782.  William Bowling then married Susannah Wilburn nee Rawood in 1790. Sarah Jackson and William Bowling married in Kirk Bramwith (and/or Hatfield).  Same with Susanna Wilburn (nee Rawood) and William Bowling.  I am unable to find a burial record for Sarah Bowling (nee Jackson).  Nor am I able to find any children for William and Sarah unless they had moved to Campsall.  Is it possible that Sarah died in childbirth around 1789/1790?  Would that have been recorded?  I can find 4 children's baptisms for a William Bowling and Sarah from 1786-1791 but I can't find anything after that.

Thanks!

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Sorting out Thomas Bowling
« on: Saturday 12 October 19 01:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to trace my Bowling ancestors and I have come across a few Thomas Bowling's.
1) Thomas Bowling baptized 1787 or 1788, son of John Bowling of Braithwaite and Elizabeth Ball (https://search.findmypast.com/record?id=GBPRS%2FYORKSHIRE%2F007570179%2F00048&parentid=GBPRS%2FYORKSHIRE%2FBAP%2F302585161) in Kirk Bramwith parish
2) Thomas Bowling baptized 1789, son of John Bowling of Braithwaite and Ann Bowling (https://search.findmypast.com/record?id=GBPRS%2FYORKSHIRE%2F007570179%2F00051&parentid=GBPRS%2FYORKSHIRE%2FBAP%2F302585180) in Kirk Bramwith parish, but the transcript says the mother is Elizabeth.
3) Thomas Bowling son of John Bowling burial 1789 (https://search.findmypast.com/record?id=GBPRS%2FYORKSHIRE%2F007570179%2F00100&parentid=GBPRS%2FYORKSHIRE%2FBUR%2F303280152)

Regarding #3, which of #1 or #2 does the burial belong to?  I figure the burial of Thomas in 1789 belongs to Thomas #1.

Regarding Thomas Bowling baptism 1787 (#1), there are several date on this entry.  There is 1788 at the far left of the entry and 1787 at the far right of the entry.  What year was he born and what year was he baptized?

Regarding Thomas Bowling baptism 1789 (#2), did Thomas #1 die and then the parents used the name again (very common I know).  How does it explain the that entry says the mother is Ann but the transcript says the mother is Elizabeth (https://www.findmypast.com/transcript?id=GBPRS%2FYORKSHIRE%2FBAP%2F302585180)

Thanks for helping to sort this out.

Lancashire / Trying to solve a Walter Garth mystery
« on: Saturday 28 September 19 21:51 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to figure out how Walter Garth is related to my 5x g-grandfather John Garth.  Walter appears on the 1841 UK census with John in Rochdale.  I do not believe that Walter is directly related to John as John (b. about 1766) married Mary Kershaw (b. about 1777) and they stopped having children about 1812.  Mary died in 1838 and John in 1842.  On the census Walter is 15.

I found his marriage entry on Lancashire Online Parish Clerk Project where it says his father is John Garth, a Blacksmith.  My John Garth was a shopkeeper and he died before 1848 so I don't believe my John is Walter's father.
Marriage: 13 Sep 1848 St Chad, Rochdale, Lancashire, England
Walter Garth - (X), 21, Chandler, Bachelor, High Street
Lucy Smith - (X), 19, Spinster, High Street
    Groom's Father: John Garth, Blacksmith
    Bride's Father: Thomas Smith, Printer
Witness: James Newcome, (X); Ann Crossley, (X)
Married by Banns by: J. Sheffield, Curate
    Register: Marriages 1848 - 1849, Page 102, Entry 204
    Source: LDS Family Search

In the 1851 UK Census, Walter is living on High Street (same as where he was living on the 1841 census) with his wife Lucy, and Margaret Boobcock (labelled as his grandmother, she is from Scotland).  Margaret Boobcock (abode High Street) died in Rochdale in Dec. 1851.

My theory is that Walter is the grandson of one of John's siblings who had a son named John.

Can anyone help me figure out how Walter is related to my John?

Canada / Descendants of Donald Cameron (Glassary, Argyll) on Rootschat?
« on: Monday 05 August 19 12:30 BST (UK)  »
Are there any other rootschatters who are descended from Donald Cameron (1793-1858) who came to Canada from Glassary, Kirkmichael, Argyll to Vaughan, ON?  Any descendants of Donald's brothers William (1807-1890), Hector (1819-1898) and Archibald (1810-1890)?  Some, maybe all, of the brothers settled in Middlesex County, ON.

Hi,

I haven't had any luck but maybe someone else can find it.  Is there a probate record for John Whitaker of Spotland Bridge, Rochdale who died on 6 Mar 1864 in Southport?

Thanks.

The Common Room / Year born (1827 or 1828) if died in their 90th year
« on: Friday 26 July 19 12:12 BST (UK)  »
I found an obituary for a distant ancestor and it says he died in his 90th year and that he had completed his 89th year on 28 July.  Since he died in Sept. 1917 does that mean that he was born in 1827 or was it 1828?

Thanks,

The Common Room / Where is Julia Garth
« on: Friday 12 July 19 23:05 BST (UK)  »
I am researching a Julia Garth.  The information I have is that she was born in Lancashire England near Manchester most likely sometime between 1810 and 1820.  She moved to Montreal Quebec Canada and married John M. Gall in 1836 (I have the marriage entry).  She and John had 3 daughters and one son (died in infancy).  After the death of John Gall in 1849 Julia drops out of sight.  I have the inventory of John Gall where Julia Garth is mentioned.  Other than that, I just can't find her, she disappears off the face of the earth.  Did she move to the States with one of her daughters?  Did she die and there's simply no record of it?  Did she move back to England?  I can't find her on Canadian census records nor have I been able to find her on US Census records.  I haven't been able to find a death record for her nor a second marriage.  She is a mystery that I would like to solve.
