The Common Room / "The Times" Jan 7th 1943
« on: Wednesday 28 September 05 17:20 BST (UK)  »
Hello there. A recent thread got me thinking, and this is the result.

I have a complete copy of the Times for Jan 7th 1943. This was kept by my parents because my eldest sister's birth announcement is in it (none of the rest of us made the Times, but apparently my grandfather insisted for the first baby!)

The point is, it also has all the other birth, marriage and death announcements posted for dates from about 1st - 6th January that year, also the "court circular" where for some reason they put the details of forthcoming marriages. There are some earlier dates but most are within this period.

So if anyone has a relation who might just be in there, let me know and I'll have a look.  You never can tell, it might knock down a brick wall for someone.

cheers,

World War One / WW1 obits.
« on: Wednesday 28 September 05 15:35 BST (UK)  »
This may be a long shot but who knows!

I have a page torn from the parish magazine of St Barnabas Church (I think Woolwich) which was kept because it has the obituary of my great uncle, who was killed in action in WW1.

However - it also has some other obits. so if anyone is looking for these names, post a message or send me a PM and I'll transcribe what it says for you.

Henry J Drewitt (Private, 2nd London regt (RF), killed in action 26th August 1918 age 18yrs 6 months
James Gordon (Private, New Zealand Expeditionary Force) killed in action 1st October 1918 age 29
John H H Rushton (Sgt Royal Field Artillery) killed in action 13th October 1918 age 38
Francis Thompson (Private, Queen's Westminsters), died of pneumonia, 2nd Nov 1918 age 32
Stanley W Meyer (Air mechanic, RAF) died of pneumonia, 21st Nov 1918 age 29

Hoping I can be of help to someone.

Occupation Interests / Hard worker?
« on: Sunday 25 September 05 21:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I may be mistaken but is the 2nd occupation on this list really "hard worker"? And if it is, what on earth does it mean (with that little note "brush" beside it....  An ideas anyone?  ???

Any ideas gratefully received!

Thanks, Veron

World War One / Help identifying uniform WW1
« on: Saturday 24 September 05 10:08 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me what this man's uniform is? What I know so far about his Army service is that his medal card says he was a Corporal 2nd in the London Electrical Corps, number 562214. An obituary in his parish magazine mentions the Territorials, and that he served on the Thames and Medway defences for the first three years of the war.

Any more info from the uniform even if it confirms what I already know, would be much appreciated.

Thanks Veron  :D

The Common Room / Help to identify photo
« on: Monday 19 September 05 19:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I', attaching two photos to this message and one shortly. I would like some opinions on which of the two young men in the portraits, is the one with the young woman on his arm - I'm sure there will be differing opinions but I really can't make my mind up.  I do know it has to be one of them!  :D

Thanks, Veron

World War One / RAF/RFC in WW1
« on: Sunday 28 August 05 11:58 BST (UK)  »
I have recently discovered a collection of photos kept by the widow of my great uncle, who was killed in action in 1918 flying with the RAF. There are a lot of photos of fellow airmen, most labelled with names. I am in the process of painstakingly scanning the ones that aren't so faded as to be unrecogisable.

If anyone has an ancestor who trained at Cramlington or Tadcaster Aerodrome in 1918, have a look at this list because I may have a picture of them. It's a real find. Send me a PM or post a reply to this and I'll do my best if I have a picture of your ancestor.

Names are as follows: (these pictures are all retrievable except the one of Capt Welshman which I think is probably too far gone). There is more than one photo of quite a lot of these people.
Lt Andrews
Lt Angus
Lt Ashboe
Lt Bayly
2nd Lt Butcher
Lt Carden
Lt Cooper
Lt Corns
Capt Mann
Lt Marshall
Lt Mason
Emlyn Powell
Lt Reay
Lt Reeday
Lt Robinson
Lt Stell
E J Stringfellow
Lt Warren
Capt Welshman
+ 1 of a machine gunnery class, no names but some are clearly the same people
+ a few of aircraft - RE8, DH6 and DH9

Hopefully I can be of help to someone. The pictures are quite small but I have had a fair bit of success with the ones I've tried so far.

Cheers! Veron  :D

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Graphics editing software
« on: Saturday 27 August 05 19:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I have a CD of the full version of Adobe Photoshop 5.0 which I used to use on my old computer (came with the scanner).  I also have Adobe PhotoDeLuxe 4.0 from the same source. Because these are (obviously) now way out of date, and I can't afford to put any cash into buying new software, I donloaded Serif Photoplus 6, but it doesn't do everything I want it to, the instructions are very different from Adobe, and all the tutorials seem to be aimed at Photoshop or PSP.

So my question is..... Which one of these (or anything else so long as it's free) is going to be the best for trying to restore a pretty large number of old photos?  ???

Help please! any useful suggestions very welcome! - Veron

Reference Library / 1901 Leftovers: What about earlier censuses?
« on: Saturday 27 August 05 19:10 BST (UK)  »
I don't know about everyone else, but I've gots tons of downloads from previous censuses as well as from 1901 - what would be the possibility of transcribing those as well? What does anyone else think?

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Reading GEDCOM files
« on: Saturday 27 August 05 13:40 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know what happens if you try to open a GEDCOM on a pooter that doesn't have any specific software installed? i want to send a copy of my tree (created with Famly Historian) to my cousin in New Zealand and I'd like to be able to tell him how to read it as he hadn't heard of a GEDCOM when I emailed him to ask if he was interested.

Thanks, Veron  :)
