The Lighter Side / What an amazing fortnight!
« on: Friday 09 December 05 23:27 GMT (UK)  »
I can't believe the fortnight I've just had! - first, someone contacted me out of the blue, having read some posts I put on the great war forum back in the summer - turns out he is researching the life of a man who was killed in action in WW1, in the same aircraft as my great uncle.... how amazing is that!  :o

and then... I found an old birthday book, belonging to the same great uncle - and it has all the dates of birth of his entire family.... in their handwriting, going back to m great great grandparents  :D  :D

and then this evening ... I was on Stepping Stones, trawling through the 1841 census, and found not only two of my gggg grandmothers - definitely, no doubt - in the same village - but also - there were two enumerators, and one was my 3 x great grandfather, and the other was his brother  :D :D :D

I'm just so happy!  I can't believe it! It makes up for a lot of brick walls, maybe I shall have to change my name.....

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / 1841 census - Snargate
« on: Sunday 04 December 05 12:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Does anyone have access to the 1841 census for Snargate? I am looking for William Stace, shepherd, who would have been aged 30 in 1841. I really want to know what wife was called and the names of any children. I'm hoping to find him with a 10 year old daughter called Caroline and possibly a baby son called William.  In 1851 he is listed as a widower, with a "visitor" called Sarah Stace who he later married, but I would really like to know who was the mother of the children.

Any help gratefully received.

Many thanks

Veron  :)

The Common Room / Details on 2nd marriage certificate?
« on: Friday 04 November 05 20:26 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know, if a widow remarries, what details would be shown on the marriage certificate? Specifically - would her father's name still be shown as on the first marriage? - I'm sure this will have been answered on Rootschat before, but does anyone know?

Many thanks

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Desperately seeking Daniel.....
« on: Tuesday 01 November 05 21:36 GMT (UK)  »
Here's a mystery.

My great great grandfather was called Daniel Clements. He married my gg Grandmother Louisa Conway in Feb 1865 in Islington - I have the marriage certificate. They both said they were 21..... but Louisa was 17 - well documented on census records in 1851 and 1861, still there in 1871, back with her father, listed as a widow. Daniel was a Carman, and gave his father's details on the marriage cert. as Richard Clements, labourer.

By trawling through the death indexes I have found Daniel's death - I hope - in September quarter 1868, aged 22 in Islington - making him 18 or 19 when he married Louisa.  I'm currently waiting for the certificate. However - try as I might I cannot track him down in 1861, or 1851, anywhere. I have tried every permutation I can think of - surname only, first name only, no district, wildcards in all the usual places.  A couple of candidates seem possible, but none of those has a father called Richard. I have trawled through the birth indexes as well, there are two again who would be the right age, neither in London, but for various reasons I don't think either of them is right.

Has anyone got any brilliant ideas for finding Daniel? Short of trawling through the 1851 and/or 1861 censuses for Islington, page by page...... this is really bugging me!  ??? ??? ???  I know there are some Rootschatters out there who seem to have second sight when it comes to disappearing ancestors......

Any help very gratefully received!

Devon Completed Lookup Requests / 1841 lookup - Hatherleigh
« on: Friday 28 October 05 22:55 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to the 1841 census who could look up the following family for me:

Head: James Tancock, born 1786
Wife: Mary, born 1791
Children :
Mary 1823
James 1825
Jane 1828
John 1829
Rebecca 1832
Elizabeth 1834
William 1835.

Dad was born in Honeychurch, Mum in Monkokehampton. All the children are on the IGI as being born in Hatherleigh. The parents were apparently married in Iddesleigh in 1822 (if it's the same James and Mary).
The younger James is definitely my ancestor - I'm trying to make sure that this is the right set of parents, hopefully because the ages will match.

Any help very greatly appreciated!

Lancashire / Broughton Congregational Church, Salford

Does anyone know if this church/chapel still exists? (in any form)

My gg grandfather was the minister there for at least 10 years spanning the 1861 and 1871 censuses. I would love to find out if I can obtain a picture if one exists, or at least find out where it was.

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can point me in the right direction.

Cheers Veron :D

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / 1841 Sheerness census lookup please
« on: Friday 07 October 05 21:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I'm looking for a family called PEARCE who I believe were resident in Sheerness or possibly Minster in Sheppey in 1841. Names etc as follows:

Robert - born 1796 (almost certainly not in county) - occupation something to do with the naval dockyard.
Mary - born 1797 (also not in county)
James - born 1825
Jane - 1826
Charles - 1828
Robert - 1833
William - 1835
Charlotte - 1837
Lavenia - 1838

I know that Jane was born in Pembroke, and Lavenia was registered in Sheppey, but I'm not sure when the move took place. Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks anyone who can help, in anticipation!

Cheers Veron  :D
