Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: How does one catch gonorrhoea?
« on: Thursday 10 June 21 22:02 BST (UK)  »
Well this thread took an entertaining turn! As it happens, my question was mere clickbait to attract some helpers!
Big thanks to KGarrad for reading 'astringent' and Ruskie and Bookbox for reading the locations, it's really helped me track Francis down in new record sets!!
Thank you Annie for sassy demonstrations of your intimate knowledge of humanity's sexual habits in detail and related diseases.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / How does one catch gonorrhoea?
« on: Wednesday 09 June 21 12:49 BST (UK)  »
See attachment for Francis Day's military record. I can't read the 'treatment' or 'observation' column for his admission to hospital with gonorrhoea. Any help appreciated!
ALSO - I can't read the locations in the first column which appear between his two trips to Aldershot. I believe he served on the Gold Coast in the third anglo-ashanti war if that helps.
Thank you!!

Armed Forces / Where to start on the Anglo-Ashanti Wars?
« on: Tuesday 08 June 21 15:54 BST (UK)  »
I have discovered that an ancestor fought in the Anglo-Ashanti Wars and was awarded the Gold Coast / Ashantee Medal (Coomassie Clasp).
Where can I turn for more information on the campaigns, especially the involvement of his regiment 1/23 and 2/23 Royal Welch Fusiliers?
Thank you!
Hywel

« on: Tuesday 08 June 21 15:49 BST (UK)  »
I hope I'm doing this right, I saw a post which offered lookups and asked for request to start new threads.

Please could someone look up Francis Day
born circa 1852 in Newport, S Wales
Enlisted into the 23rd Regt in Nov 1870
The number 76 appears on some of his papers, I think this is his regimental number

Thank you!!

Wow Sandra thanks so much, you found a lot of info here!!
It doesn't look like Daniel or Martha ever went to Canada then, just their children.

Thank you so much for this Sandra! I happened to see this record on FamilySearch but don't recognise Daniel's daughter informant. Also, another record matches Daniel in Salisbury in 1922. So not sure which one to go for!

On Ancestry put Vessels in Keyword, which will give you the names of people on vessels in the census.

Stan

Thanks Stan!! I'll give this a go now!!
