Thank you for that information, which leaves me in a quandary!!!

If a Roman Catholic priest performed the burial rites would this indicate the deceased was Roman Catholic or that a C of E Padre was not available??

Thank you for all your suggestions.   I'm very grateful.

The last knowledge of him before his death was his marriage in April 1871 which was conducted according to the rites of the "established church".

For the sake of being complete about his burial, the record states he was buried in Plot 2, 5th Row, 8th grave!!!........qualified by the word "unconsecrated".    Incidentally, this detail can be found on FindMyPast.

Sadly, no.........he was Church of England, baptised in the Anglican Church of St. Mary, Newington, Surrey.   Just for a moment I thought you had the explanation :'( :'(

Hello,

On 3rd June 1879 Corporal William Thomas DOWNHAM of the 10th Hussars died of Phthisis Pulmonalis (TB) in the Portsea Garrison Hospital.   He was buried on the 6th June in UNCONSECRATED ground in the Parish of Portsmouth Burial Ground.

Can anyone please explain why he was buried in unconsecrated ground???

Thank you,

Thank you Watson,

A distinct possibility, in fact probably correct.

My only difficulty is that being discharged as "objectionable" in 1868 rather disqualifies him from being a soldier at his wedding in 1871!!

I never came across "objectionable" in my National Service except "dishonourable discharge", although my Company Sergeant Major should have won the title...."very objectionable"!!

Hello,

He married Naomi Ann PAIN on 10/04/1871 in Kingston upon Thames and according to the wedding documentation his occupation was "Soldier".  I have researched all the appropriate indexes, at least those available to me, and have been unable to unearth any service details   Can anyone help please?

Incidentally, he died in 1879 in Portsea, Hampshire (GRO only), with his widow re-marrying sometime later.

Thank you.

Good Evening,

I'm overwhelmed by the kindnesses shown by "softly softly" and "eilthireach" in providing so much research.   Hopefully, at some time in the future, I might be able to repay you, whilst not forgetting  those who helped earlier.

Now comes the easy part:  writing the narrative of Henry DORWOOD's life ;D

Thank you

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Thank you for responding so quickly to my post.   I am extremely grateful that the information opens up entirely new areas for me to research and answer a substantial number of my questions. 8)
