Dear All,

I'm enquiring to see if there is anybody related to/or recognise George Hodgins.  I've managed to locate his records throughout his life and I have listed them below to assist for any relatives/friends of him:

  • Born in 1869 - England to the parents of Michael Hodgins (Profession: Seaman) and Elizabeth Murphy.
  • Parents married in 1872 in Drogheda
  • Residence at Duleek Street, Louth
  • George was baptised in 1882, St Mary's, Religion: Roman Catholic
  • Enlisted the Irish Royal Rifles for Military Training in 1885-1888
  • Married Margaret Gregory in 1891
  • Resided at Priests Lane, Louth
  • Enlisted with Labour Corps during WW1.  Years of service 1915-1919
  • Moved to Edinburgh post 1920s or 30s.  Had contact with a family by the name of Duffy, particularly a James Duffy and A.Duffy.  Last address is 213 Canongate, Edinburgh
  • Died 20 Jan 1939 and buried in Eastern Cemetery, Edinburgh

Hope this may relate to someone either in Ireland or Scotland.

Regards.

Armagh / Somerville - hit a brick wall
« on: Tuesday 13 August 13 20:42 BST (UK)  »
Dear All,

I've managed to trace my family to the end of the 18th beginning of the 19th Century.  At this time my family had connections to Belfast, Drumcree, Portadown, County Armagh and Antrim.  The profession passed from Father to Son was Blacksmith.

I've managed to locate the three brothers of Thomas, Alexander and William, with each of their respective children.  But I can't find any records for the three brothers spouses or indeed who their parents were.

I was hoping someone might have connections to this family or indeed any advice on what I could try to move forward with my search.

Many thanks.

Louth / Birth Record advice
« on: Thursday 08 August 13 15:41 BST (UK)  »
Dear All,

I've been tracing my family and wanted some advice on the subject of birth records.  I have located my Great Grandfather on the maternal side and have traced his life's history other than his birth.  His military records state that he was born in Drogheda unyet the census record for 1911 for Ireland states he was born in England.  Having applied for birth certificates there is no trace in either country.

My family have informed me that they always believed he was born in Manchester and he was the first to be born of his siblings prior to his parents getting married.  His birth was listed as 1868/69 and I wondered would there have been a stigma in Ireland for a child born out of wedlock? Would attempts me made perhaps to cover the birth of an illegitimate child?

I did manage to find a boy by the same name as my Great Grandfather in Manchester with the same birth year but living with another family and he looks to have died at the age of three.  But my relative returned to Ireland and married before he passed away in Scotland at the age of 70.

Many thanks.
