Thanks Dan NC, I get you! Small is beautiful. And what you’ve done with it, is great. The physical size of the pic is 61x85mm and it’s not sharp at all - no doubt a focus problem at the time with the shot. Anyway, I appreciate what you’ve done - much better that what I currently have.

Hi again,
This pic of my wife's mother taken in 1937 at Weston-super-Mare requires some TLC. Amongst other things, there's a nasty blotch on Jean's face which needs repair.
Would really appreciate help on this.
Many thanks .... Sel

Hi to all the great restorers on this Forum. Hope you are all keeping safe and well in these troublesome times.
This pic surfaced recently after years of obvious neglect. I just don't have the skills or the software to bring it to life. I've scanned it at the best resolution my scanner will allow. Hope this helps.
All attempts to restore will be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks .... Sel

Hello Rootschat photo editing pros,

I have recently turned my family history attention to dealing with the many photos/images I have in the family collection. At this stage I would appreciate some guidance on how to deal with the various (1) digital image files downloaded from our family cameras/memory cards, and (2) digital images sent to me electronically.

All are JPEG files with varying file sizes. Many have good pixel dimensions (eg 4000x3000), others not so good (eg 687x983).

Questions:
1. Does it make sense to progressively convert these to TIFF before any editing (I have developed some basic skills using native software available on my Mac desktop) to avoid further deterioration?
2. The software also allows me to change “Resolution” (I guess this refers to DPI Height & DPI Width) - should I be doing this now, or is this only applicable if/when the image is to be printed?

Many thanks for your advice and comments.

Deidre ..... Thanks for that advice. I'll contact the local studies library in Cardiff as suggested.
Really appreciate this help.

Mckha489 ..... Thanks for the info re the property sale. I can access FindMyPast at my local council library so I'll spend some useful time there chasing down newspaper notices. And yes, familiar with 1939 Register. There are three closed records for John snr  (these would be Evelyn, Molly and John jnr). We know Evelyn married a BROWN and there's three likely marriages I'm looking at. We don't know much at all about Molly, but there's also a couple of possible marriages for her that are on my list to look at.
Very grateful for all your have done for me today ..... so many possibilities for extra info opened up.

I missed a couple of your later posts which landed prior to sending my previous reply.

Yes, we're aware John snr was a jeweller, and yes the family  did live over the shop. I'd be interested to know then source of your info for the property sales in 1936. John would have been 36 at the time, so maybe the transactions were to help facilitate him into the business initially started by Walter. Sourcing info on Welsh property records is something I'm yet to research.

Very interesting family dynamics indeed! That Caroline and her sister Sarah both married a Taylor initially complicated things even more. And until your confirmation of Sarah's marriage to William Kelly, we had no idea they were living so close to John & Caroline.

I've now located the marriage records for Walter's sisters Florrie and Sarah, so that widens the opportunities for further research as well.

I have no idea why there was no mention of the sons in Walter's death/funeral notice - maybe some family rift at the time? Who knows!!

Lots of work here!

Very grateful for the info you have supplied. I'll pursue all the references further. I'm certainly more advanced today than I was yesterday.
Cheers ...

Many thanks, Mckha489, very much appreciated. There’s a potential mine of information here from some sources that I was not familiar with.
For a start, I’ll inject some Oz dollars into the UK economy and order the wills which hopefully will provide more good info. I had looked at the Taylor/Kelly marriage but her middle name options (Ellen/Helen) provided just provided confusing options. Maybe I should have looked harder!
The 1930 separation date is really important for our records - Denton Road, Canton, Cardiff ties in with other info we have, so I'm not sure about the 'Ely' reference. Is the Western Mail for the period in question available online? And divorce records - are they accessible?
Thanks again ..... Sel
