Aberdeenshire / A Family Puzzle

Hi Everyone

I could really do with some help with another dilemma of mine. I have a proven line to my GG Grandpa James Allan, who died in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire on 10 Nov 1869 (I have the cert) - his parents noted as Alexander Allan, Innkeeper & Mary Simpson - both deceased. James was married to Jane Aitken - she died 28 Nov 1883 in Inveruire. Her death cert has no details of parents. I cannot trace their marriage anywhere (assuming they were married).

Jane is shown on 1851 census in Inverurie age 43 born Udny
She is also marked on 1861 Census in Inverurie aged 56 born in Udny
She is marked on 1871 Census in Inverurie aged 61 born in Udny
1881 Census has her in Huntly aged 75 born Udny (I have other evidence to confirm it is the same person on all 4). One problem is I can find no trace of her birth in Udny on any combination of the ages back to birth dates.

Next problem is James himself - he is marked on 1851 census in Inverurie age 42 Bn Peterhead and on 1861 census in Inverurie age 58 born Peterhead. I have checked Peterhead from 1805 - 1820 - no Allan kids either sex born there between those times.

They had a bundle of kids - 3 in Chapel of Garioch and 4 in Inverurie between 1831 and 1851 but all before stat register so no marriage details etc.

Does anyone have any suggstions where to go next for info on James and Jane

Best regards

United States of America / Re: Passenger List Help Request 1912 - 1914

Hi Annie

Truly grateful for your assistance - my GGrandmother Elspeth Allan(MS Gordon) born 25 Feb 1860 in Huntly, Aberdeenshire.  Her husband Robert Allan died in 1905.  I know that in August 1912 she was living at 1 Farquhar Place, Aberdeen (I got this from the passenger list of SS Numidian leaving Glasgow on that date for Ellis Island - this was the next of kin address given by her Daughter Jane Ross Gordon Burnett who was a passenger travelling to Barre, Vermont to join her Husband Henry LG Burnett - she had her two children travelling with her).  Elspeth died in Aberdeen in 1922.  I have contact with Jane Burnett's Granddaughter in US who gave me the information (confirmed from her father who is still alive) that Elspeth also came to Barre before WW1 and worked as a nurse in Barre Hospital and then returned to Scotland around 1919.  It is possible that she may had travelled to US with either or both sons John Smith Allan b1891 in Aberdeen or William Allan b1895 in Aberdeen.

Hope this may be of some help to narrow the field a bit.

Best regards

Les

There was a St Mary's Land in Edinburgh's Old town (in Midlothian, Scotland) until about 1900 then the buildings there were demolished and built on by Edinburgh University.  The 'land' part referred to old tenement type buildings of the time which were under multiple occupancy, I think that the area would have come under St Giles Parish of the time - the OPR's from there might help a bit.

United States of America / Passenger List Help Request 1912 - 1914
« on: Sunday 25 September 05 15:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks

Could someone please help with a lookup on passengers lists to US between 1912 and 1914 for Espet (or Elsie or Elizabeth or Elspeth) Allan (MS Gordon) - she would have been 52 in 1912.  She travelled to Barre in Vermont to her daughter Jane Burnett.  I have info that she was in Aberdeen, Scotland in August 1912 - other details that she went to US before outbreak of WW1 and returned to Scotland in 1919.  I have checked out Ellis Island site - no trace - but do not have access to other passenger list sites.

Thanks lots

Les
