Argyllshire / McNiven/Islay birth 1836 in Skibba? Kibba? Hibba? Hibbe?
« on: Saturday 20 June 15 18:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Looking for some local knowledge about the birthplace of my great grandmother Ann McNiven in May 1836.  Difficult to read the handwriting of father's residence in the OPR but the parish is Kilchoman.

If it helps, father John was a slater and married Christian McNiven July 1830 in Kelsey/Kelsay.

Anyone got any idea where this might be/have been?

Hi James,

Thank you for your feedback.  Will follow up on the searches you suggest.

Recently found Mary and her husband had made a Poor Law application after her husband had been declared medically unfit to work which left them destitute. As part of the application, her parents' names and her place of birth were recorded.

Would love to know what brought her to Inverness: I feel it is not the most obvious place to go to from Middlesboro to look for work. Good to know what Albert Terrace is like.  She could have been born to a servant in one of these houses and then given away. Oh the mysteries!!!

Thanks again for your brill help.  Surprised anyone could find something out of my mish-mashed jigsaw pieces!!

Hi,

Looking for help trying to find Mary Woods.  Been looking a very long time, with no real luck.  Any help or advice to find Mary and her family would be much appreciated. Here is what I know about her:

First name is Mary: or Margaret or Margaret Mary
Surname is Wood or Woods

Father is James Wood(s) whose occupation is a Confectioner or once he was a farmer.
Mother is Elizabeth Guire/McGuire/MacGuire or Quire or Gare (both with or without the Mc/Mac): She may have been Irish.

Mary was born in Albert Terrace, Middlesboro in 1871 or maybe 1875.....
Mary married in Inverness in October 1898 where she was a domestic servant.  She claimed that both her parents were dead at the time of her marriage.  She and her husband were Roman Catholic.

Her children were called Albert Alexander, Alfred John, Henry Edward, Samuel and Violet Mabel: the names Alexander, John and Samuel appear in her husband's side of the family; no trace of a James or Elizabeth appearing as a child's name.

Have tried census records and online trees to try to find a link but have been singularly unsuccessful.

Was wondering if Albert Terrace might have been an orphanage or workhouse where she might have been abandoned. Would anyone with local information know if this is a possibility?  Or if someone had the reference information such as piece nos to make a search of Albert Terrace that might help tracking them in the 71 & 81 census.

Once again, any help or suggestions would be gratefully received.

:)

Perthshire / Re: PLEASE HELP - Cecelia MORRELL, ms Cairney/Kearney

Hi Julia,
Been a while since I've been on rootschat. And quite a while since I looked ot this branch of my family so don't recall the full detail. Found the family in Ayrshire in 41 census. They seem to be one of two seperate families in 41 & 51 census in the whole of Scotland. Son Thomas m Margeret LC Williamson. Son James was my grandmother Cecilia Cairney Morrell's father.

Had a really difficult time finding James's death cert. When wife Martha died 1911, he was noted as dead. In fact, he died in 1913 in Blairgowrie: obviously a 'civil' separation. Interestingly, have never been able to find his brother Francis's death..... though his widow died in Blairgowrie.

Have you tried searching under Cissie? Is it possible she married the guy who owned the burial ground? Is there any evidence that she did not go back to Ireland? New BMD info now available online.  Have you looked yet?

I seem to remember something about my gran seeing a gravestone with her name on it and being told it was the grand lady she had been called after.  Oban was also mentioned at the time but not sure what the connection was.

If you have found anything since your post, would be good to know. The fact that they travelled about quite alot AND the multi-various name spellings have made tracing them quite difficult.

Good luck!

:)

Renfrewshire / Re: Poor Law Institution, 15 Craw Road Paisley

Hi,

Records for burials are with Renfrewshire council for Hawkhead and Woodside for the Woodside one.  Presumably, these are the two you have tried.

If you have a death date, you could try contacting the undertakers in Maxwellton Street (forgoten their name) to see if they have a record.

The library has the poor law records, and it may be that there is a record there for your relative which may give information about the burial.

I don't think there was a cemetery at the site, although it was on a big piece of land.

If they lived or had relatives in areas bordering Paisley, it could be that they were buried there, eg Elderslie, Kilbarchan
