World War One / Cap badge identification
« on: Friday 11 October 13 20:07 BST (UK)  »
Could anybody tell me what regiment my Great Grandfathers cap badge belongs to please? It's the early 20th century. I know he was in the Kings Royal Rifle Corps in the 1st World War, but I'm trying to find a link to the Manchester Regt in 1902 - 1905 as a boy soldier??

Armed Forces / Richard Hunt
« on: Tuesday 08 October 13 13:18 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to locate my Great, Great Grandfather Richard Hunt's Birth and wedding details. I have copies of his military records, where he served in the 81st foot and the Royal Artillery, from 1854 to 1877, stating he was born in Nenagh, Tipperary, Ireland in 1834. I have looked on RootsIreland but have been unsuccessful, so I'm thinking his father may have been serving in the Army there. (There is a Lt Colonel Arthur Hunt, R.A born in Ireland, living at the Royal Arsenal in 1841 with children, one of them being Richard G.C Hunt age 4, born in Ireland. He is still living with Arthur Hunt in 1851 aged 13 in Shootershill, Plumstead.
But on another 1851 census there is another Richard Hunt born in Ballingurn, Tipperary, Ireland age 25, who is a private in the Army living at Brompton Barracks, Gillingham, Kent.
I have a copy of his death certificate stating he died in 1882 in Woolwich, Kent.
On my Great Grandmother Annie Catherine Hunt's birth certificate in 1881, born Woolwich Arsenal, it states that her mother was Mary Connor and her father was Richard Hunt, pensioner R.A.
I have 1861 census for Mary Ann Connor age 9 born and living in Woolwich, living with her Father Thomas born in Kerry, Ireland and mother Flanora (Norah) also born in Ireland, plus other family members. And she is also on the 1881 census as Mary Hunt aged 30, living with Richard, stating she was born in Woolwich, with children;
Richard age 9 born in Bombay, India
Charlie age 3 born in Jersery
George age 2 born in Woolwich
May/Mary age 7days born in Woolwich (I can only presume they changed their minds about her name to Annie Catherine).
I can't find their wedding details, and I'm presuming they may have been married abroad? Is there anyway I could find armed service marriages and births?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Lancashire / Thomas Briggs
« on: Tuesday 08 October 13 10:44 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to locate the birth of my Great Grandfather Thomas Briggs. I have his military records from the 1st World War, which states that he was 26 years and 19 days old on his attestation date of 5th August 1914. It also states he was born in the parish of Ancoats, Manchester.
I have his wedding certificate stating he was 22 when he married Alice Jones on June 10th 1911 in Blackley, Manchester and his father was John Thomas Briggs, deceased.
I have a census record from 1911 stating he was 23 living in Blackley as a boarder with a family called Ingoe, who were witness's at his wedding.
All the above records state he was a colour mixer/chemical worker, I know there were paint works and ICI near Blackley at that time.
But something that has totally thrown me is a record from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission from 1918 stating that his next of kin was his mother Hannah Gribbin?
I can't find Thomas in any census before 1911 and I can't find any Thomas Briggs born in Manchester in July 1888.
Any advice on this matter that I have been struggling with for over 7 years would be greatly appreciated. Pleeeease!!
