;D Yes I have as you saw. The other thing I found (which helps with Ernests service history) is the Electoral rolls which shows Ernest as an absent voter - but also shows me how he progressed through the ranks.

Just had another look at the roll of honour - In the 1911 Census, Ernest was living with his father in Selly Oak, Birmingham - 12 years old. He would have had to have moved back to Northampton to enlist. I`m not aware that he did, so I need to do some more research to see if I can confirm this.

I`m not aware of a "Herbert" in my tree, but It`s an ongoing project so he may come to light somewhere along the line.
p.s. I did try to upload the photo of Thomas senior for you, but it won`t load for some reason - is there a limit to the no. of uploads I can make?

I have had a look at this website and fleetingly looked over the roll of honour, but will go back for another look.  :)

Good morning Sandy, first of all, apologies - I think I called you Sarah in my pm! (Senior moment).

The only photo`s I have at this time are direct line ones - i.e. Gggrandfather, Ggrandfather and Grandfather. I will happily attach one to this for you.
The one I started the thread with is Thomas Senior in Uniform, next we have Thomas William, his son - born Northampton 1871 died Birmingham 1940. Thomas appeared to have joined the Yorkshire Regiment in Jan 1886 and served in a number of places, but was invalided out with Epilepsy in 1893.
My Grandfather was Ernest William Barby, born Northampton 1898. We cannot find a service record for him, but do know he joined the Royal Field Artillery. From my Aunts memory, he was serving on the Russian front around 1915`ish. He also served in France in WW1 and was subsequently posted to India where he met and married my Grandmother Frances Elizabeth Phillips (nee Young) - an attractive young widow with a family of 5 children already. They married in 1923 and my Father and his siblings were all born in India, finally coming home to England on the 15th July 1938.
I find it a fascinating story as my Grandmother was left to fend for herself and her 5 children when her former husband died at the Somme in 1918. She made a living in India playing the Piano I am told.
So, my branch of the Barby family migrated to Birmingham.

Hi Sandy,
Many thanks for the welcome....I`ve known about Rootschat for some years, don`t know why I didn`t join earlier!  ???
Thanks for that link, very interesting to see and confirms most of what I already had - didn't have one of the children on this list though, but I had wondered why there was such a large gap between two of them - usually means a missing child. So that has filled that slot for me. I also have some other info that the owner of that tree may like to have.

Coming to this site has been really useful, all the hints and tips, plus I now know that Thomas junior was also in the Army - none of the family knew that as he died before my parents generation were born.
Many thanks to everyone who has responded to my request for help.   :)
