I have been taking advantage of the free records during this special weekend, and have a couple of questions regarding my husbands grandad named above.

He was born in Woking , Surrey in 1881, he attested to the queens surrey regiment on the 18th February 1897 then if I am reading it correct he was discharged for misconduct 4 days later .

The second record I have is in 1916 a tribunal which seems to focus on his occupation not sure of the outcome of that.

If anyone can help I would be grateful.

Good morning

It has been quite a while since I have looked at this so have not updated the information I have since found.

I discounted the Mary Field / Henry Butler marriage but trawling through records I found this to be correct the clue being Henry giving an address in Burton on Trent which I have attached to the family, it was a real eureka moment for me. The marriage took place in 1893 in St Andrews Dublin.

Henry shows his father as Edward Butler, but this is his stepfather Edward Birch.

Mary Fields father is Patrick Field , cab driver, which then led me to a marriage to Elizabeth McCann.

Thank you

Thank you so much , I found him on a couple of ships prior to this, so he was  around in 1921,   will have to try and track him down after this.

What was the role of a steward ?

Good morning

I am tracing my grandmothers family this is what I have found

John Denning Challis married Josephine Farrell in 1886 and had 5 children

Sarah my grandmother m George Wade in 1920

Edwin 1896 d 1903

George 1894 d 1929 cannot see a marriage for him

Martha 1897 m Trevor Combes 1918

John born 1887 is where I am stuck I have him on 1901 census and a couple of merchant ship records in 1904 and 1902 and then my trail runs out.

There is an immigration record in 1908 but unsure as it gives is occupation as a farmer, which seems a big change in occupation.

I wonder if someone could add anything to this for me please.

Many thanks
