John and Ann had 11 children, including my grandfather, Peter Watts Mummery Stark

There are links to the Johnsons and Smiths as well as to the Knowles.

One of the Stark / Knowles descendants was my first ever contact when I started researching the tree, and she was from the Marden, and I never knew her as a child, even though we were separated by 1 year and 1 street .

It's a small world.

I've even got a copy of Peter Watts Mummery's memorial service notice -- Mate of the barque ' Favourite' - lost at sea off Dalhousie - which I believe was New Brunswick, Canada. (one of my father's cousins has got the original)

How interesting - we most certainly related.

My records of your line stop with Robert and his siblings.

I'll be only too pleased to share the family information with you -- The Mummery's have been traced back to the mid 1700's near Dover.

I'll send you a personal mail with my e-mail address, then I can extract a gedcom file for you.

Renfrewshire / Stevenson 1851 census, Kilbarchan

Trying to trace my wifes GGF John Stevenson, b abt 1834 Kilbarchan.  John had a brother James.

Original line of enquiry via other family members led me to the Stevensons of Barnbeth, but no John appears in 1841 census.

However John, son of William and Rebecca of correct age appears at Linwood Village. They also had a son younger son James

If anyone is looking up 1851 census I'd be interested to find out any clues as to whereabouts of  John (age 17), and James (age 14)

From Peter and Florence's marriage certificate, Florence's father is named as a Joseph Murrills (a fish merchant) - not John Britteon whom her mother married shortly after Florence's birth!

The Murrills name seems to be a mis-spelling, and that it is likely that the name was Murrell.  I've contacted Murrell researchers, who seem to think that I am on the right track, as unusually for the mid 1800's Joseph was divorced in the 1860's, probably as a result of extra marital activity!

Whilst I knew that Florence was almost certainly born out of wedlock, It came a surprise to find her father was not who it had assumed to be.

Thanks for your help Suzard, but that is definitely not the correct family.

My GGF was a fisherman who settled in Lowestoft.  He married Florence Gertrude Swan in Lowestoft.

Hi Linda

The more you look, the more you find that illegitimacy was not as uncommon in victorian times as you would imagine - given the well publicised moral tone of the era.

There are certainly more than one or two 'early babies' in my tree, or 'father unknown' turning up on birth certificates.  Occasionally there are clues via census records where a child's given names reflect those of the head of the household to whom the childs mother was not married at the time - but nothing is sadly provable.

Rootschat has a habit of throwing up the unexpected from time to time.

Linda

I've got a copy of Peter Walker's marriage certificate, which whilst confirming his birth in Liverpool and age at May 1882 as 23 years, and father's name as John - a sailor, it also threw up something unexpected.

His wife Florence Gertrude Swan I believed to be the love child of John Britteon, and Mary Sterry Swan, born out of wedlock before their marriage.  However the marriage certificate gives her father's name as Joseph Murrill (sp Murrell?) - a fish merchant.  It would appear that when John Britteon married, his bride already had an illegitimate child.

My grandmother's (Rhoda Gertrude Walker) own birth certificate showed her mother's maiden name as Florence Gertrude Britteon - so obviously the illegitimacy was conveniently 'hidden'.

Curiouser and curiouser

Looking for my GGF Peter Walker, b apr - jun 1858.

from his marriage certificate, his father's name is given as name John Walker

in 1881 Peter was on board a fishing vessel in Lowestoft

Peter's childrens names included Harold, Sydney, Rhoda, and Hugh none of which figure in his wife's family tree.  Another child Alfred was possibly named after his wife's half brother, but had a middle name HURN, which may possibly be from Peter's mother's side.

Any help gratefully accepted.

I am descended from George How(e) and Susan Claydon.

I'll be happy to share what gedcom information I have on the How(e) line back to William How b abt 1730 and Mary Mingay.

I have no links on my tree to the Pryke family, but do have a baptism of an Elizabeth Howe in 1818 who may possibly have married George Pryke in 1838.

Elizabeth was the younger sister of George How b 1803 who married Susan Claydon
