That's wonderful, Trevor, thanks so much for sharing it. The Khyber was a real hot-spot of trouble. If it wasn't Afridi tribesmen it was cholera!

Thank you again.

Hello Trevor,

As you probably know, the 51st had quite a busy time at Ali Musjid, even after the battle. One particularly exciting episode, a few days later, saw 200-300 Afridis rush a small piquet manned by just 17 men of the 51st - the attack was repulsed.

I'm not sure if you're aware of this link which publishes the diary of Colonel Ball-Acton, who commanded the 51st int he second phase of the war (second-in-command during the first phase).

Hello fellow researchers,

I'm new to this forum and just wanted to register my interest in this campaign (Afghanistan 1878 - 1880). I am happy to help with questions anyone might have, and I am also interested in hearing from the descendants of people who were involved in or around the war.

I have a lot of information at hand but am always interested in more. Queries are welcome, as I like to help out if I can, and it also forces me to look into different aspects of the campaign and I learn more for myself each time.

I have a website, which will be going through some bigger updates over the next few months, at http://www.angloafghanwar.info

All the best -

Hello Annie,

That Lord Roberts article was actually in response to a query that was posted on the Great War forum, so the site has been mentioned there but not for a few months. I'll post a new topic on this forum concerning the Afghan War, as I'm new here.

I had a look at the July Challenge - very interesting! A different branch of the Ewings though..

Just as another note on Lord Roberts: If anyone wants to know more about him, his autobiography 'Forty-One Years in India' is relatively easy to find still (try abebooks.co.uk), and he was the subject of a number of 'heroic' biographies, especially after the Boer War at the turn of the century when he added to his status in that campaign.

Lord Roberts and Winston Churchill were the only people -  apart from Royals -  to have a State Funeral in England!

Sorry to 'dig up' an old(ish) thread, but just thought you may be interested in my web page concerning Lord Roberts' funeral in 1914.

Lancashire / Re: When was Ada Halstead born?

Hello,

I just wanted to write a quick note to say thanks Valda, and others on this topic, for your searching and help in pointing Gillg my way and helping to join our trees up. Five years ago I heard the family story from a great aunt that John Higson, she thought, had two daughters from a previous marriage possibly called Ada and Ida, and that's all we knew. It's wonderful for this branch to suddenly spring to life.

I have written to Gillg and look forward to sharing our information. The Higsons are one of those branches where family information was very limited and I have not 'lucked in' to anyone else's tree, so I have only had my own detective work so far - which is very gratifying, but I was starting to get stuck on it!

Thanks again!
