Leicestershire / Children's Homes 1930s
« on: Tuesday 31 May 16 15:59 BST (UK)  »
To start with I'm not sure if this person is still alive, hence why I haven't given the name of who I'm looking for - if it would be ok let me know and I'll add it

My grandfather, Horace Cherry Simpson (1908 to 1959) was married before he married my grandmother, his first wife, Lilian Voss (1910 to 1935) died and their only daughter who was born in Leicester in 1931 was put in a children's home.

He remarried in 1938 and shortly after moved to Birmingham, his daughter didn't come to live with them (as far as I'm aware my grandmother's daughter (Annie Tiday 1928-2004) did live with them - however as she was married when my dad was born in 1957 it's possible she didn't but my dad did grow up knowing Annie as his elder sister.

After her father's death my father remembers this sister turning up on the doorstep (he estimates about 1961) but didn't stay in touch

I have no idea where to go from here (I'm assuming she was in the children's home from when Lilian died but it's possible she was only put there when he remarried) and would appreciate any information on where to look, possibly as to which children's home she was placed in, what happened to her afterwards etc

Any help much appreciated

The Common Room / Does this seem possible?
« on: Sunday 15 May 16 10:25 BST (UK)  »
I've come back to a bit of a brick wall of mine, the wife of one of my gr, grandfathers. This is what I have
Rosanna Pegg born Jul quarter 1846 in Leicester
1851 Rosana Pegg, aged 6 living with parents John and Mabel Pegg (and assorted siblings) 39 Bedford Street,
1861 Rosanna Pegg, aged 14 living with parents John and Sarah Pegg (and siblings) at 39 Bedford Street,  (I'm assuming Mabel died and Sarah is the stepmother)
1871 Rosanna Pegg, aged 24 living with parents John and Sarah Pegg (and younger brother) at 39 Bedford Street,
1873 - 22nd January Roseanna Pegg marries the widower Henry Edward Cherry in St Margarets
1881 Rosannah Cherry, aged 37, living with husband Henry, 2 step sons and 3 of her own children at 58 Upper Charnwood Street
1891 Rosannah Cherry, aged 43, a widow (Henry died 1889) living with her children and an Ellen Ball (they have Ellen as Rosannahs mother but only 11 years older than her - unless Sarah dies and John Pegg remarried again and it's stepmother) at 107 Crofton Street
1901 Rosanna Cherry, aged 50, a widow living with her 2 daughters at 47 ?rosbury street?
1911 Rosanna Cherry, aged 64, a widow living with her 3 daughters at 4 Matlock Street - form filled out by her daughter Elizabeth

This is where my trail went cold as couldn't find a trace of her after 1911
BUT I've come across a marriage for Roseanna Cherry in 1892 to either William Norton or Francis Tarry in Leicester

I'm wondering if she married Francis Tarry but continued to use her old name as he was committed to an asylum

1881 Francis is unmarried a show riveter in Leicester (aged 24)
1891 - can't find
1901 - a married shoehand, in Leicester workhouse, listed as an imbecile
1903 he dies aged 55

The lunacy records show him being in Leicester borough asylum from 28th October 1901 to 9July 1903 when he died there

have tried looking for deaths for Rosanna under the names of Pegg, Cherry and now Tarry without luck but wondered if any of you would have better luck

Thanks for reading this far

I have discovered that my several great grandmother Hannah Merrill first married William Smith on 12 July 1822 in St Martins, Leicester (I believe he died in 1823 but there are two local William Smith deaths and I have no other info on him)

She then remarries James Cherry on 2nd Sept 1824, in St Margarets, Leicester

I got these details from family search (James's death records gives Hannah's maiden name as Merrill) but have no more details and wondered if anyone has access to the records to potentially give me fathers names etc

From the censuses Hannah was born 1803 in Wilbarston, Northamptonshire (she's consistant with place of birth and age) she dies 1872 aged 79

Thanks

The Common Room / Posthomous Birth
« on: Sunday 27 March 16 20:55 BST (UK)  »
If a woman registers the birth of a child after the death of her husband is she asked to prove the death (and when it happened) or can they just get away (or could they) with giving their dead husbands name as the father, even though he actually died a few years earlier?

The Common Room / Which transcript is more accurate - bishops or parish?
« on: Saturday 26 March 16 19:13 GMT (UK)  »
I've found the records for one branch of my family on freereg - however my 4times great grandfather's baptism appears there on two different dates

24th Dec 1803 - bishops transcripts
27th Dec 1803 - parish register (transcripts only)

Both in the same church, with same parents

Which one is more likely to be correct?

On a sad note though his parents had his older brother baptised on the same day that they buried their 5 year old daughter

The Common Room / Repeated admissions to lunatic asylum
« on: Thursday 18 February 16 15:22 GMT (UK)  »
A great aunt of mine seems to have had several admissions and discharges to a lunatic asylum before finally dying there.  Up till now those who I have found went in there and never came out so was wondering what sort of thing could have lead to these repeated admissions?

13 Jan 1860 - 12 Jul 1860
25 Nov 1875 - 30 Aug 1876
12 Feb 1877 - 13 Jan 1887 (death)

Could inmates sign themselves out or would family have to do so? (she is living with her parents on the 1861 and 1871 census)

The Common Room / How accurate is age on death certificate?
« on: Wednesday 17 February 16 18:34 GMT (UK)  »
I *think* I've managed to find a death record for one of my relatives, however the age is out by 3 years - is this within the realms of possibility?

'My' Fanny Simpson is born 2nd quarter 1855
1861 she's aged 6 with her mother and stepfather
1871 she's aged 16 with her mother and step father
1881 she's aged 26 with her widowed mother
1891 she's aged 36 with her married sister
1901 she's aged 46 with her niece

In 1907 'a' Fanny Simpson is admitted to the asylum in Leicester and dies there in 1909 - aged 51 (when 'my' Fanny would be 54) - death registered by the master of the asylum

I have requested the asylum notes and am hoping they give her niece (or niece's husband) as person who admitted her as then I will know it is her.

Any other ideas as to how I may prove or disprove this death

Canada / Thomas Edward Simpson
« on: Wednesday 17 February 16 15:59 GMT (UK)  »
First time I've had to venture across the Atlantic for research and have to admit I'm getting a little lost on where to go next so would appreciate some help.

I'm looking for my gr, gr uncle Thomas Edward Simpson, born 27th Nov 1874 in Leicester, UK to Thomas Simpson and Sarah Ann Green.

He married Jane Bilson on 19th April 1897 at St Marks in Leicester.
They have a little girl, Joyce in 1902

In Aug 1907 the 3 of them go on the Ottawa to Quebec, Canada

21st Nov 1911 their son Thomas Edward is baptised in St Thomas, in Elgin in Canada - I'm assuming this is where they settled.

Then my trail goes dead and I've got stuck.

He's a shoehand while he is in England if that is any help

The Common Room / Help please
« on: Thursday 31 December 15 18:59 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to help a friend's grandmother who was fostered as a baby and wants to know about who her birth family were.

I've had a go but am stuck and you lot tend to be very good at breaking down brick walls

The lady's surname is PERRY and her date of birth 5/7/1934 (I've not given her first name as she's living)

She was advertised in a shop window as a baby and fostered. On her birth certificate it says she lived at 56 commercial street Newport (South Wales) her mother was Annie Perry (Rowlands was her maiden name) - (according to the freeBMD this is actually Rowland without the S)

My nans foster name was Brown.

No record of father.

She knows she had an older sister called Reena Perry who lived with her mum in bristol temple meads.

She thinks her mum died from a RTC.
