World War One / Kew Look Up request
« on: Sunday 24 November 13 10:00 GMT (UK)  »
Was wondering if anyone is planning a trip to the National Archives in the near future and is willing to look up a war diary for me - I know it's cheeky but thought it was worth a shot.

Am looking for the 41st Siege Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery, which apparently has not been digitized yet
The reference is WO95/470 and it covers from arrival at war on 1.7.1915 through to 31.1.1918.

However my great uncle - gunner Jonah WESTON (service number 33030) - arrived in France on 9/12/15 and died on 10/6/17 - he is buried with 4 other members of the same gun crew so imagine a direct hit

The ones he is buried with are Samuel CRONE, G PENNIE, J ROYLE, Harry WEBB

World War One / WW1 records
« on: Friday 22 November 13 08:06 GMT (UK)  »
If someone was already in the army does that mean they would be on the WW1 service records on ancestry etc

Jonah Weston was a gunner at Golden Hill Fort in the 1911 census and he died at Messine on 10th June 1917

I can find him on ancestry on 'soldiers who died', found his grave on the war graves website etc but can't find any other record - I know several were destroyed in WW2 but wondered if I was missing something

Europe / Help find death details - Calais
« on: Wednesday 20 November 13 21:18 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out when my fourth great grandfather died.
I can't find anything in the UK BUT 5 of his 8 children were born in Calais, I believe he moved there as was a Lacemaker somewhere between 1828 and 1831 (child in 1828 born in Leicester 1831 in Calais)

His name was James Cherry born 1791 I believe, married to Hannah
Their children were
Henry Cherry (born 1826 in Leicester - who I am descended from)
Suzannah Cherry (born 1828 in Leicester)
Sophia Cherry (born 1831 in Calais)
Elizabeth Cherry (born 1833 in Calais)
Sarah Cherry (born 1835 in Calais)
John Cherry (born 1837 in Calais)
Charles Cherry (born 1838 in Calais)
Mary Cherry (born 1844 in Leicester)

The family are not on the 1841 census but are (without James) on the 1851 census - from this (and the lack of a UK death for James) I suspect he died in Calais and a pregnant Hannah returned to her family so would guess at a death of late 1843 to 1844

Thanks for reading this, and even bigger thanks for any help about the family

The Common Room / Salvation Army Dedication after CoE Baptism
« on: Wednesday 20 November 13 13:41 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if a child who had already been baptised in a CoE ceremony (1907) could then have a Salvation Army Dedication (1918)?

My grandmother was baptised a few months after her birth in St Mark's Church in Dukinfield (I have a copy of the baptism entry)
In the army records from 1915 her father states CoE
However under children and baptism in his army records it has the 4 children (my grandmother being the eldest - younger 3 born in Leicester where they lived from 1908) and one 'baptism' date - 10th November 1918 with officiating minister James Ramsbottom, commandant Salvation Army.

My theory is that her parents must have joined the Salvation Army between 1915 and 1918 - any other ideas? can a child be 're-baptised' into another faith - even though both are Christian?

BTW my grandmother was never into the Salvation Army from my dad's memory so was a surprise when it came up

Somerset / Finding a photo of old soldier
« on: Wednesday 20 November 13 09:42 GMT (UK)  »
My gr, gr uncle Jonah Weston born 1892 in East Harptree died in Messine on 10th June 1917 (he was regular army as was in barracks on the Isle of Wight in 1911)

I know some photos of soldiers who died at the front were printed in local papers etc - any ideas as to where I could look, what the local papers would have been etc?

Leicestershire / Leicester Lunatic Asylum
« on: Sunday 17 November 13 17:35 GMT (UK)  »
My gr, gr grandfather George Cherry was a patient here in the 1911 census (in 1901 he's living with his wife and children), he died later in 1911

I understand the records are locked for 100 years after their death, obviously in my case that is past so does anyone know how I can request the records and what sort of costs are likely to be involved?

The Common Room / Overcrowding
« on: Sunday 17 November 13 14:38 GMT (UK)  »
Were they any limits on over crowding (housing wise) in 1911 which  may have led to people lying on the census about who actually lived in the house.

My great grandfather (John William Tiday), his wife and children appear untraceable on the 1911 census.
According to someone on here (thanks a lot whoever you are I can't find your name) his son was born at 33 Taylor Street in Leicester in 1908 (would love to find out how you know the addresses for the births - I only knew Leicester) and this address is given on his attestion papers in 1915.

According to the 1911 census his sister (Betsy Johnson), her husband and their 4 children are living in the 4 roomed house (2 up 2 down I think), but it seems logical (as I can't find them elsewhere) that the 2 adults and 2 other children were also living there.  If more people were declared than the landlord thought lived there could there be trouble - and could that be a reason for their 'disappearence'? (of course it may just be they were away overnight)

The Lighter Side / Incorrect Dates on Birth Certificates
« on: Saturday 16 November 13 16:47 GMT (UK)  »
Wondered if anyone else had lying ancestors on official forms?

It was known in my family that my great grandfathers birth certificate didn't have his actual birthday on it (he only found out in his 20s so continued to celebrate his birthday on the actual day, which he always had.

You have 42 days to register a birth, his mother registered the birth 49 days after, so rather than pay the fine she simply declared he was born 7 days later and registered him on the last 'free' day - when I got his birth certificate the dates tally with the old tale.

When he died (aged 91) his son also gave the wrong (or official) date of birth
