Family History Beginners Board / Foster Sister - what does it mean?
« on: Sunday 10 June 18 16:50 BST (UK)  »
I've found a copy of a newspaper article about the wedding of a relative's great grandmother in 1897 in which it said 'the pretty bride enjoys the distinction of being the foster sister of Princess Victoria Melita'

The bride's father was keeper of the regalia in Edinburgh castle so it seems quite possible that she knew the Princess (from the 1891 census she was born in Malta (approx 1879), the Princess was also born in Malta (Nov 1877)

Glamorganshire / Lilian Pugsley's death - help please
« on: Wednesday 09 May 18 10:02 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find a death record for a relative

Lilian Pugsley was born 3am on 30th Aug 1905 at 8 Dinas Road, Dinas
Her mother was Sarah Ann Gillard, father Thomas Pugsley (who had died on 5th Apr 1905) - the 5th of 6 child (Edith Mary was born 15 minutes later)

Sarah goes on to marry Evan Coxley in 1910

1911 census
Sarah and Evan are in Abercynon with Thomas (14) and Charles (8)
Benjamin (10) and Mary (5) are with their maternal grandparents in Dinas

The other daughter (Lily) born 1898 was buried in Trealaw cemetary in 1899 when she died at 11months old

I've tried looking on the 1939 census and can't find Lilian, noone remembers Edith Mary ever mentioning a twin sister - so everything points to her having died between 1905 and 1911

Can I find her though?  Checked with Pugsley, Coxsley and Gillard as the surnames

Please say someone else is better than I am

Would anyone be able to tell me what information is on these records

I only subscribe to ancestry at present but it came up with a hint for my great grandfather Arthur Weston (on his death record he is Arthur Frank Weston - Frank was his twin brother and he seems to have adopted his name as a middle name at some point).  He was born 13 Dec 1901 in East Harptree to William and Emily

The transcript on ancestry is as follows
Name   A Weston
Gender   Male
Age   16
Birth Date   13 Dec abt 1902
Birth Place   East Harptree, Bristol, Glob
Service Date   7 Dec 1918
Service Number   326037
Father   William Weston
Next of Kin   William Weston

Is there any more information than this on the find my past records - if there is I'll purchase the credits,

I wonder if anyone would be able to help me and have better luck tracking down my husbands great, great grandfather from the limited information I have

Thomas John Pugsley born approx 1871 in Somerset

from his marriage on 25th Jan 1896 to Sarah Ann Gillard he is Thomas John PUGSLEY, aged 25 and his father is also Thomas Pugsley

1901 census
Thomas Pugsley aged 30 living in Dinas, Rhondda   born in 'Somersetshire' with his wife and two children

His death in 1905 in Pontypridd has him just as Thomas Pugsley

Thanks in advance for reading this

The Common Room / Please help Cooper/Ando
« on: Wednesday 04 October 17 16:58 BST (UK)  »
I'm hopinh that writing this out may either help me see what I'm missing and also get rootschatters feedback - either to back up my thoughts, or come up with another idea which will probably be right

Trying to find out about the parents of Mary Elisabeth Cooper born Brynmawr, Breconshire in 1854 (registered Crickhowell)

Her parents are George Cooper and Mary Ann (maiden name Ando)

Her siblings (from the1891 census) births have the maiden name of Ando in the majority of cases -
Frederick (born 1880) has the mmn of Andrews - Frederick is the 5th child out of 10)
Robert (born 1894) has mmn of Audo (I'm guessing this is a transcription error)

Also in the 1891 census there is a 'father' given for Mary Ann - William Cresswell aged 75

There is a birth for a Mary Ando (no middle name) born 1854 in Crickhowell, Breconshire - according to the censuses Mary Ann was also born in Brynmawr, mothers maiden name Hawkins

However I can't find a marriage for George Cooper and Mary Ann Ando - or find Mary Ando on any censuses

But there is a marriage for George Cooper and Mary Ann A Cresswell - could this be them?  How can I prove this?  Why would she use Cresswell to marry but give maiden name of Ando on her childrens births

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Martha Carver
« on: Monday 04 September 17 14:50 BST (UK)  »
Have never been able to trace the death record of an ancestor of mine Martha Carver, nee Cavill

She was born in 1784 in Ubley, Somerset and married George Carver there in 1807. Her daughter, also Martha, was born there in 1816

Wasn't able to find any more record of her at all, then today I came across a 1851 Channel Island Census with her in St Helier, Jersey

Martha Carver, widow (head of housebold), born approx 1784 in Ubley, Somerset, with her
Martha Wonnacott, daughter, born approx 1815 in Ubley, Somerset

Martha Carver (daughter of George Carver) married William Wonnacott in 1848 in St Saviour, Jersey

George dies in Ubley in 1838

Anyone got any ideas of where I can find out where and when Martha died - I can't find a mainland death but I believe registration in the Channel Islands is seperate - and I have no clue about it, this is the first time my family tree has taken me there

The Common Room / Found a poem
« on: Wednesday 16 August 17 18:58 BST (UK)  »
Have been chasing down my father in laws tree as part of his xmas present, and found this poem on ancestry about his great, great grandmother by her children (not sure which one), explains her death so much more than just hypothermia and exposure

Wondered if anyone else had found similar?

In ever loving memory of our dear Mother Rose Hannah Mills (of Hampnett)
Who perished in a snow storm Nov 18th 1893
Aged 63 years.
~~
From Hampnett, whence the Leach runs down
And takes its way through Northleach town

Rose Mills our mother ventured forth,

While winter tempest swept the earth.

It was a wild November day.

Fierce north east wind tore on its way,

And blinding snow and icy rain

Joined in the rushing hurricane.

'To Northleach I must go!' said Rose,

'Howe'er it blows, or rains or snows,

Our daily wants I must supply,

And into town must go to buy.'

She went, and battling, inch by inch,

The storm from which she would not flinch

She gained at length the place she sought

And all she needed, quickly bought.

Then in the early evening gloom

She turned towards her cottage home.

The stormed still raged, but cheered by hope,

She feared not with its blasts to cope.

'I battled down', she said, 'and now

I'll battle up, through wind and snow.'

Through many storms she oft had pass'd

Nor feared this one might be the last.

Yet so it was, old paths were lost,

And well known fields were vainly cross'd,

Till all bewildered, blinded, chilled,

Rose fell with heart forever stilled.

Now in our green churchyard we lay

Her mortal flesh, with kindred clay,

Trusting her soul has gained that shore

Where storms and suffering are no more

Family History Beginners Board / Can a death be registered in two names?
« on: Saturday 05 August 17 13:59 BST (UK)  »
From the 1911 census I've been looking for an extra child for Richard Hine and Henrietta Coe, who died prior to 1911.
This mystery child clearly was born and died between censuses

There are 4 children listed on the 1911 census, 2 living 2 who have died In 16 years of marriage (which would make 1895)

The living children are easy
Henrietta and Richard - both on the 1911 census

Ethel Hine (mmn Coe) was born and died in 1899

But there I came to a dead end

But tried illegitamate births just prior to the marriage and came up with Gladys Mary Coe, (no mothers maiden name) born in Wandsworth in the last quarter on 1896

Richard was in the army and sent to India on 14 Feb 1896, he was discharged on 8th Jun 1897 due to being medically unfit - Richard and Henrietta married on 24th October 1897 (two years after the date they give in the census) - it's plausible within the time scale that Henrietta discovers she's pregnant with Richard's baby just after he went to India, and therefore unable to marry her but they marry soon after he returns home)

There is a death for Gladys Mary Coe on both freebmd and gro in Jun 1898 in Wandsworth (freebmd gives an age of 1, gro of 17 - however I have seen gro giving ages in months instead of years - 17 months would fit with the birth shown

On freebmd (but not gro) there is also a death for Gladys Mary Hine - aged 1 - both on the same volume and page

I can't see a birth which would fit for a different Gladys Mary Hine (there is one in Newport in 1886 - but she dies there when she is 3)

So the question is if she was officially Gladys Mary Coe but known as Hine would there be two entries in the death register?

The Common Room / George Fitsall Hine
« on: Thursday 03 August 17 21:36 BST (UK)  »
I appreciate that I may be trying to discover the impossible however thought if anyone can help it'd be rootschatters

My husband's greatgrandmother Norah Lily Hine (1914 - 2015) was orphaned in 1918 - her father was killed 29 May 1915 (he's one of the missing listed on the Menin gate) and the mother died of the flu epidemic in Dec 1918 and she and her two sisters and brother were all sent into an orphanage.

On researching the family tree I discovered another brother - George Fitsall Hine was born in Feb 1918 in Fulham - he was sent to Australia as part of the child migration programme in 1930 (he died in 2007)

From the British Home Children group on here there was the following information about his WW2 service
HINE GEORGE FITSALL :
Service Number - WX36526 :
Date of birth - 11 Feb 1918 :
Place of birth - LONDON ENGLAND :
Place of enlistment - GERALDTON WA :
Next of Kin - MRS FITSALL [Woolworth - Aunt]

I'm assuming his father must have been someone Fitsall and was wondering if there was any way of working out who he must have been
