New Zealand Completed Requests / Registered Medical Practitioners
« on: Saturday 01 August 15 06:53 BST (UK)  »
I have two queries. The first concerns locating records for medical practitioners who worked in NZ in the 1960s and 70s. Is there an archive or searchable database anywhere? Secondly, if a medical practitioner was registered in the UK were they automatically registered to practice in NZ. I'm researching a one name history and it looks as though a branch of the name was connected to a doctor working in NZ between the late 1950s up until 1970. Have tried NZ Archives, can find him on Ancestry electoral rolls in 1963 and 1969 and then nothing. Can't locate him in a cemetery with a searchable database. Also unable to locate his wife after 1969 electoral roll.

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Armed Forces / Army service 1812 - 1827
« on: Saturday 03 May 14 06:41 BST (UK)  »
Hugh Rose, b 1794 Scotland joined the 1st Foot Regiment at Glasgow in November 1812. His discharge papers show he was considered unfit for active service and he was discharged from the army in 1827 with "diseased lungs". From Ancestry I have found he served in the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards, Lt. Col. West's company at Waterloo. Is there a means of learning where his army service would have taken him between 1812 and 1827? I am trying to ascertain where any children might have been born. I also have no idea when or where he died. If he is the Hugh Rose I am looking for he would have had a daughter born in England around 1816/17 and he would have been back in Scotland between 1837 and 1840/41.

The Common Room / Bernock
« on: Friday 02 May 14 03:01 BST (UK)  »
I have had trouble accurately locating the birthplace of Hugh Rose b 1794. On his military papers it gives his place of birth as "Bernock in the county of Sutherland". Initially I thought it was Dornoch as I found a Hugh Rose born in 1794 in Dornoch. I can't find Bernock as a place in Sutherland. I also checked Ross & Cromarty without success. Would be very grateful for any tips.

Many thanks,

Armed Forces / Inverness-shire Militia
« on: Friday 25 April 14 11:53 BST (UK)  »
My 3 x g/grandfather, George Alexander was apparently a Lieutenant in the Inverness-shire Militia. I have been unable to find much information about this group. I'm assuming it was probably part of a Scottish regiment. He was born in 1779 and I have found a George Alexander in the Chelsea Pensioner records but am uncertain if they are the same man or not as that Geo. Alexander was with the 73rd Foot which may or may not have been a Scottish regiment in origin.

Glamorganshire / Williams/Hyort(h)
« on: Monday 21 April 14 03:45 BST (UK)  »
My great grandmother, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Williams had two sons, Samuel William G Williams b 1885, father unknown and George Hyort(h) b 1903, father unknown. In 1890 she married Peter Hyort and in the 1891 census his place of birth is given as Denmark, occupation Sea Mariner. Their address is 1 Portia Terrace, Swansea. However, there is no record of Samuel living with them and I have been unable to track him down. In the 1901 census, Lizzie and Samuel are living with Lizzie's parents but Samuel is listed as their grandson, which is not unusual. George can be found on the 1911 census with his mother. Although he was registered with the name Hyort he was not Peter Hyort's son as Peter died in 1897. I can find no record of Peter, marrying or dying. Have checked CWGC site but without luck. Also, in 1893 there is a birth record for an Ancene Lilian Hyort and as with George, she seems to vanish. I cannot locate her on any census records. Would be grateful for any help with regard to how I might find these missing children? I have birth certificates for Samuel and Peter. Lizzie married Daniel Griffiths in 1914.

Family History Beginners Board / Margaret Rose b abt 1818
« on: Monday 21 April 14 02:00 BST (UK)  »
Have been going in circles trying to find anything that will identify where my 3 x great grandmother, Margaret Rose, was born and who her parents were. She married Robert Alexander in Urquhart, Morayshire, Scotland in 1836 and on the 1841 Scottish census her place of birth is given as England. I have checked the census record on Scotlands People and there is definitely an "E" in the place of birth column. Unfortunately Margaret died before 1855. The only commmon denominator is the presence of Hugh Rose as a witness at the baptism of at least 2 of her children. Initially I thought he might have been her father, a brother or an uncle however, I have been unable find a Margaret Rose and a Hugh Rose as having at least one parent in common. I was able to find an Alexander Rose with a daughter Margaret but he did not have a brother Hugh. I have checked some baptism records for England and found a Margaret Rose born in 1818 in Lancashire to a George Rose and a Mary Rose. I can only assume that Margaret's parents travelled to Scotland for some purpose or perhaps she was an orphan and was taken to Scotland by relatives. Would be very grateful if anyone could suggest any other avenues of research.

Many thanks

Perthshire / Keathbank
« on: Thursday 28 November 13 05:21 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know what or where Keathbank is or was. I have 2 births - 1875 and 1877 and the place of birth is given as Keathbank. The mothers of these girls were sisters and the family were Irish Catholics living in Dundee. Was Keathbank some sort of unmarried mothers institution?
