Thanks - if that one can be made so much better I think I'll try you all with an image of my gt.grandmother Lucy Speight.  I'd love to see what she looks like, especially in colour:-)

Much obliged for your effort.

Hi Sharon,
Thanks for the attempt - you did much better than me:-)
I very much regret I don't have a bigger image. I only have the 6-7KB that was sent to me by the direct descendant. The sender doesn't have the original photo, it's in the possession of an aunt and she got a copy made and posted it to him.
Thanks again.
Rena
here's an attempt, its not very clear I'm afraid, do you have a larger scan of the picture.

Hi Kizmiaz (I'd rather not do that thanks:-)

Thanks for trying to enhance the image.
I wish I had the photo - unfortunately, this is what was sent to me ages ago via email by the direct descendant - obviously he used the 'make smaller' facility.
I have a problem in that he doesn't respond to my emails since my computer crashed & was out of action for quite a while and I'm wondering if I've missed a notification of his new email address.

thanks again - much appreciated.

Hi Rena

Theres not a great deal that can be dragged out of this picture as it is. As Sharon says, it needs to be rescanned at a much higher resolution. You can post pictures up to 200kb here, and this one is under 8kb.

I think that a much larger scan would have quite a bit of digital information that could be extracted and it looks like there may still be a chance to . from being lost. The lack of detail caused by the small size is most evident in the blocks on his jacket.

This is all I could get out of it in this state.

Hi,
Is it possible to do something with this image of my grandfather's uncle John David Shearen born 1847?
My grandfather was named after him and it would be nice if I could compare likenesses.

All efforts appreciated.

I don't know what county your Ingram family is from - but have you searched this catalogue?  There's plent to choose - from priests to clerk to the guardians.

Hi Prue,
I'm looking at a similar pocket book which was passed down through my husband's line.   Generally, it's not significant to his profession, but shows that he (and probably his family) were deeply religious people.  I don't think a photographic prop would be as 'thumbed through'.  The other portrait told a story through the very fashionable clothes the man was wearing - "look at me - I'm a successful man".  By the way - the 'stitches'  going up through the portrait look like a walking cane to me.  My grandfather had 6 canes of varying thicknesses & designs for all seasons and reasons.
If you think this man studied theology/divinity at a university (such as Edinburgh Uni) have you thought the ring might be a college ring?

Cheers,
Rena

Wow, thanks Rena!  I had no idea about the signet ring, and our man is definitely over 21  ;D so that would make sense.  Can I ask what made you think of that particular book, and whether you think it would be of significance to his profession, or just a prop for the photo?

Thank you!  :)

Railway stations and hotels used Porters, even 'Night Porters' to carry suitcases and do other light work.  You haven't given an indication of decade but there were men who carried a light round the streets and lit the gas street lamps.

Hi,
The book is probably his personal pocket book of the "Daily Light", which was a devotional text book, each page gave a chapter of the bible, e.g. "The Spirit Helpeth Our Infirmities".. the Lord is my shepherd ROM.8.26. His being able to read shows his parents must have had money to be able to send him to school after the age of 10 or 12 yrs old. The ring on the little finger should be a signet ring given by parents when a son reaches his majority. which nowadays would be 18th birthday but used to be 21 in the 20th century and 25 in the 19th century.  The jacket is of far better quality than any of my family wore in photographs.
