Buckinghamshire / Thoughts on Joseph Miller and Sarah True of Hedgerley ?
« on: Saturday 09 February 19 17:14 GMT (UK)  »
They say that a problem shared is a problem solved, so I thought I would share with Rootschatters.

On 1 May 1771 a bastardy bond for £40 was entered into between the overseers of Beaconsfield and:
Joseph Miller of Hedgerley, labourer
William Miller, of Langley Marish, victualler, and
Roger Pewsey, of Hedgerley, steward
In respect of Sarah True “now or late of the parish of Beaconsfield”, singlewoman with child by Joseph Miller.

Joseph Miller (bachelor) and Sarah True (spinster) married at Penn on 4 September 1774. Both “of this parish”

A Joseph and Sarah Miller had seven children baptised at Hedgerley from 12 Mar 1775 to 10 Oct 1790.

A Sarah Miller was buried at Hedgerley on 27 May 1810, aged 60.

Assuming these are the same couple:
1   I cannot find a Sarah True born in Bucks around 1750
2   I cannot find a baptism of the 1771 child
3   Why did they wait until 1774 to marry?
4   What is the relationship between Joseph and William Miller?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm wondering if someone can work their magic on this battered photo of my Dad.

I've included a couple of other (earlier) snaps if case they will help to fill in the missing bits.

Many thanks in advance.

ADDED - sorry the one for repair has somehow flipped upside down!

England / Where are Thomas & Elizabeth Major apart from Oxford in 1851?
« on: Tuesday 03 July 18 17:37 BST (UK)  »
This is an irritating one, which I periodically have a poke at, without success.
Can anyone find ANY sighting of Thomas and Elizabeth Major, apart from 1851 census?

In 1851, this family is at Cross Keys Yard, Queen Street, Oxford (HO107/1728/476/2)

Thomas Griffin   Head 60  Ag Lab  born Newbury BRK
Hannah                wife  43                         Marsh Gibbon BKM
William                son   18   Ag Lab          Newbury BRK
Eliza                     daur  21                         Newbury BRK
Hannah                 daur  16                         Newbury BRK
Jane                       daur 13  scholar            Newbury BRK
Thomas Major     son in law 37 dealer in marine stores    Folkestone KEN
Elizabeth Major    daur  26   wife of do, lacemaker   Marsh Gibbon BKM
John Deacon         visitor unm 22  dealer in marine stores   East Ilsley BRK

Elizabeth was the (illegitimate?) daughter of Hannah Burgess and was baptised at Marsh Gibbon on 24 October 1824. Hannah married Thomas Griffin at Marsh Gibbon on 21 May 1827.

I have the Griffins in 1841 in Abingdon (apart from Elizabeth).

I wonder if London experts are able to help me with the follow up on this topic http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=789472.18

I’ve noticed my ethnicity estimate at Ancestry has just changed.

Before I was:
GB (Southern England)   35%
Europe West           25%
Ireland/Scotland/Wales    15%
Scandinavia             12%
Iberia               10%

Now I’m:
England and Wales (Southern England)   90%
Ireland and Scotland                         7%
Norway                            3%

A bit drastic, I think, even for a bit of fun.

At least in the real world the matching does work and some mysteries are being solved….

England / Trying to find some missing Richmonds from Berkshire
« on: Friday 09 March 18 14:25 GMT (UK)  »
In 1841 the Richmond family are at Castle House in Donnington, just north of Newbury, Berkshire.  HO107/17/23/8/11

Thomas Richmond     35 Ag Lab
Lucy                 35
Betsey         15
John                 12
George         9
Joseph         7
Helen         6
Maria         3
Mary                 2
All born Berks, except Lucy & Betsey born in Hampshire

The eldest son was nearby at Shaw Red Farm HO107/17/21/5/4
William Richmond    12 Ag Lab born Berks

I know what happened to  Thomas, Lucy, John, Joseph, Maria and Mary, which leaves:

Betsey (or Elizabeth) baptised Oct 1826 Newtown, Hants. Had daughter Emily 1 Jan 1846, and then disappears.

William born 1830 – only found in 1861 at River, Kent aged 30 railway labourer.

George born 1832 – in 1851 at Fox Grove Farm, Kingsclere Hants aged 20 farm servant

Helen (or Ellen) born 1835 – in 1851 with mother Lucy at Parrs Yard, Newbury.

I wonder if Rootschatters with fresh eyes can find what happened to these four?

Derbyshire / Looking for bastardy order Sarah Buckley & John Meakin, 1821 Elvaston
« on: Saturday 17 February 18 08:47 GMT (UK)  »
I'm am new to searching in Derbyshire, and I am now looking for a bastardy order.

Job Buckley was baptised at Elvaston on 7 Feb 1821, the illegitimate son of Sarah Buckley, servant.
Sarah married John Meakin at Elvaston on 24 Jun 1821.

Job used the surname Meakin, and when he married in 1847 he gave his father as John Meakin, labourer.

Please could folk with local knowledge suggest how I go about seeing if there is a bastardy order for this case.

This link https://150.aub.edu.lb/timeline#15
shows the first graduating class of the Syrian Protestant College, Beirut (now AUB) taken in 1870. They are  Ibrahim Khairallah, Kaisar Ghureiyib, Naum Mughabghab, Yakub Sarruf, and Ibrahim Musawwir, with John Frazer (master).

Some websites (including AUB!) suggest Sarruf is standing on the right; another says that person is Ibrahim Khairallah.

However, the AUB Library say “Yakub Sarruf is the fourth either from the right or left, it is hard to tell” (!)

They suggest I make a comparison with the other undated photo of Sarruf, which they sent me. (By the way can anyone suggest a date for this?)

I am incapable of doing this sort of comparison, so over to you Rootschat experts.

The Common Room / Find a will on GOV.UK not working?
« on: Wednesday 07 February 18 19:46 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to search for wills at GOV.UK but for the past few days all I get is

"Sorry an error has occurred"

Has anyone had the same problem?  Or is it just me?
