This photo is said to show five generations in a direct female line.

Please could folk suggest a date when it was taken?

Any guesses for the age of the girl?

I might then be able to have a stab at a couple of identities.

many thanks

My newly discovered cousin has shared this wonderful photo of our great grandmother Elizabeth Barlow nee Coxhead (1867-1938) – she is raising her glass.

I think the bottle label matches Simonds [of Reading] “Brown Ale 1 Oval 1932”.

Is Elizabeth’s hat just fashion, or workwear? Does that badge look like Simonds’ hop leaf logo?

Is she sat alongside a sister ?– possibilities are Louisa Ann Coxhead nee Coxhead [married a cousin] (1864-1942) or Mary Maria Reed nee Crook (1875-1933).
They all shared the same mother, but had different fathers.

Any thoughts from fresh eyes would be most welcome.

This is a very long shot!

Does anyone know if this group photograph was taken in Berkshire?
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=786359.0

It has been dated to 1917-20. My great grandfather Edmund Barlow is seated at the far right of the front row. He was a general labourer, but in 1911 was described as a jobbing gardener. In 1901 and 1911 he lived in St Johns View, Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

Someone may recognise a face or the building. Or indeed have an identical copy.

As I said, a long shot - but you never know.

Is anyone able to say if the row in the photo at

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=786632.0

is Pelican Terrace, Speenhamland, Newbury?

Am I right in thinking it has been demolished?

But are there any old photographs or maps anywhere?

Is anyone able to work their magic on this photo?

I wonder if a kind Rootschatter can date this photo?

I'm trying to figure out which of four daughters these two girls may be, so it will hinge on the girls' clothes, if that is possible.

I'm pretty sure this is outside 3 St Johns View, Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

Wiltshire / Edmund Barlow 1869-1927 - is he in a staff photo at Stourhead?

On the photograph dating board I posted what appears to be a picture of (gardening?) staff and others  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=786359.new#new

It has been suggested it could date to 1917-20.

This ties in with a standard postcard of a front view of “Stourhead Mansion" - I have attached the message on the other side.

My grandfather Bert is writing to his mother at Newbury, and I think the postmark is 27 JUN or JUL 17.

Bert’s father was a gardener and I think he is the chap seated on the far right.

Are Rootschaters with Wiltshire knowledge able to say if the photo on the other board is Stourhead?

I'm not sure if I have got the hang of resizing images, etc but here goes.

Could someone suggest a date for this photograph?

The chap seated at the right hand end of the front row is my great-grandfather 1869-1927. He was a gardener from Newbury, Berks.

This would be a long shot, but could it be Stourhead House?

The Common Room / Why is this gravestone in a strange place?
« on: Tuesday 23 January 18 09:27 GMT (UK)  »
Is there any significance to the placing of a gravestone on the exterior wall of a church?

The church is St Mary’s, Aldworth, Berkshire.

The stone is on the northern side, to the left of the left-hand tower buttress in this picture  https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aldworth_Church.jpg

The inscription reads
In memory of/ Ann the daughter/of/AARON and MARY/BARLOW/who died Nov 4th./ 1807 aged 3 years/ and 8 months.

Aaron came from Aldworth, but was a baker and grocer in Eversley, Hants.
His wife and 2 other children were also buried at Aldworth, but they have no gravestone.

If the siting of this stone was a rare occurrence, it's not any longer. Someone has built a shed in it’s place! https://howardwilliamsblog.wordpress.com/2014/07/17/aldworth-church/
