Suffolk / Stone and Mayes in Flixton
« on: Monday 21 June 21 14:40 BST (UK)  »
I am having another look at my families in the Bungay area, and I wonder if Suffolk Rootschaters can help with some brickwalls?

James Stone was baptised at Flixton on 6 August 1784, and in the 1841 and 1851 censuses he was at Beccles Road, Bungay. He died and was buried at Bungay in September 1852.

He was the son of James and Mary Stone.  James senior married Mary Mayes at Flixton on 1 Dec 1783.

But these are the only two Stone events at Flixton. This would suggest to me that this was Mary Mayes’s home parish, but the marriage is the only Mayes event!

I use Ancestry and Findmypast, plus the South Elmham & Wangford baptisms from Suffolk FHS. I cannot find any other trace of James Stone senior and Mary Mayes.

Can fresh eyes help me out?

Berkshire / Toomer's 1815 census of Newbury - missing pages on Berks FHS disc
« on: Thursday 13 August 20 19:46 BST (UK)  »
I've just noticed that the transcript on the Berks FHS disc starts at "page 6".

In place of pages 1 to 5 I have duplicated pages of information about the Society.

Does anyone else have this issue? Or do I have a rogue disc?

I wanted to see page 4 for details of John and Elizabeth SALTER. Is anyone able to help with that?

Armed Forces / National Service – could someone choose which unit to serve in?
« on: Thursday 11 June 20 09:37 BST (UK)  »
I’ve tried to find this online, but I’m not having much success.

One of my late uncles did his National Service in the Life Guards. The story is that he was able to choose this unit because his grandfather had joined them years before.

Another uncle has heard the story but doubts there was any choice. He says his brother signed on for three years to get extra pay.

Does any Rootschatter know if National Servicemen could say which unit they wanted to serve in when called up?

(As it happens, I can find no evidence of my great-grandfather being in the Life Guards, but perhaps that’s for another topic).

The writing on this certificate is a touch troublesome!

It is between Oliver Sydney Blissett and Hettie Miller; those addresses actually say Cromwell Road (!)

On another Blissett : Miller marriage (yes, two brothers married two sisters) George Miller's occupation is given as "plasterer".

But what is George's occupation on the attached?   "B----?---- labourer"

Durham / Bishop Transcripts for a Sunderland marriage in 1812
« on: Saturday 22 February 20 14:08 GMT (UK)  »
Family Search have Bishops Transcripts for Sunderland, where I was hoping to see an image of the marriage of William Sneary and Mary Readmile on 5 August 1812.

I've found the 1813 marriages, but if I "scroll" back there appears to be a gap and 1812 is missing.

I don't really want to browse through 700+ images on the off chance that the 1812 pages are misfiled.

I've tried and failed to find out exactly which years are in these Bishop Transcripts.

I wonder if any Durham Rootschatter knows which BT's have survived for Sunderland.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Will of John Grigg, Jacobstow, Cornwall 1687
« on: Saturday 01 February 20 13:20 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help with this section?

I’m struggling with transcribing, and the meaning of, the phrase “she[the?] Lives of L[?] Hoall [Hoult?] Live solong or else to Abate”.

Also, is anyone able to make out the line inserted just above “Item I Give unto Margery Grigge my dafter...”

The whole will is on FamilySearch at

Monmouthshire / Waingoch (Waungoch?) Row, Beaufort (?) Bedwelty 1891 census
« on: Saturday 31 August 19 12:14 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

When George Hawkins got married to Beatrice Shepherd at the parish church at Beaufort on 10 May 1891, he gave his address as 14 Waingoch Row.

I'm trying to find this address in the 1891 census.

I've tried the census street index for Bedwelty via National Archives without much joy.

Can anyone give me a hand?

[I've tried finding George without success - it could be a transcription error, hence wanting to find the actual address in the census]

I am struggling with the first beneficiaries (6th and 7th lines up from the bottom) –

“to Michael ? to William ? and to Samuel ? children of my Brother in Law Thomas ? “

What is the surname?

I have tried unsuccessfully to find an example of this capital letter.

This handwriting is used all the time in PCC wills. What is it called? Is there an alphabet available online?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Are these signatures the same William Miller?
« on: Saturday 16 February 19 18:24 GMT (UK)  »
One image shows a bastardy indemnity of 1771 from Beaconsfield, Bucks, in which William Miller is described as a victualler of Langley Marsh [sic].

The other shows four Langley Marish marriages of 1769 which William Miller witnessed. I think he was the parish clerk.

Are these signatures of the same person?
