« on: Wednesday 22 June 16 16:35 BST (UK)  »
I am confused (again).. I think I found a baptismal record for my 2nd gr grandfather in Kerry Ireland but the surnames for his parents are different to his.  Is this just an error and the father was James Murphy, mother Maria Leahy?  Plse See below:

Name:    Thade Murphy
Event Type:    Baptism
Baptism Date:    17 Jan 1833
Baptism Place:    Killeentierna, Kerry, Ireland
Diocese:    Kerry
Father:    James Leahy
Mother:    Maria Leahy

As always, thanks in advance for any help offered:)

Canada / Cross Border Divorce
« on: Thursday 16 June 16 15:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi - one of my uncles moved from NZ to (eventually) the USA.  However, he went via Canada arriving in BC in 1908.  In 1910 (Vancouver) he married an Iriish woman (who died in 1957).. but in 1915 he emigrated to the USA and married a Swiss immigrant.  They remained in the Michigan area until they died.

My question is --- would he have had to return to Canada to get a divorce and, if so, how would I go about verifying that?

Or, could he have applied for the Canadian divorce from the USA.. and how could I go about checking that?

Thanks for any information you can offer.  I'm REALLY hoping to see a divorce pop up somewhere as the alternative is a bit grim!

Perhaps someone could bring their superior sleuthing skills to bear in this matter:

My 3rd gr grandfather Thomas Brookes died in NZ and was buried in Milton Borough Council on 18th Dec 1886 aged 60.  He was the Town Clerk of Milton for many years. His wife was Isabella Johnston who died in 1917.

Thomas was a well known figure in the area and therefore it is highly unlikely his death wasn't registered.  I have cemetery records for him and contacted NZBDM who suggested the strategies I have already tried and locating a folio number but that is not available to me.

I obtained a death cert for another Thomas Brooks died February 1886 (aged 58) but it is for a completely different person.

I have tried widening the search by
1) not using a christian name
2) changing spelling to Brooks and Books
3) extending the years from 1866 to 1896

NOTHING:(

I posted about him recently and was rewarded by other's knowledge and assistance so I come begging again :-[

If anyone could suggest any other avenues I would, as always, be much appreciative!
Thanks and regards, Carol

New Zealand Completed Requests / Town Clerk of Milton Clutha circa 1866 to 1886
« on: Saturday 11 June 16 16:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi my 3rd gr grandfather was the Town Clerk for Milton.  He held the position until he died in 1886, when it was taken over by one of his sons.

Given that Thomas Brookes (sometimes spelled Brooks) was a fairly prominent person in the area I am wondering if there is a likelihood of the town or a local museum having photos of him and or his family?  His wife was Isabella Johnston.

Could anyone point me in the right direction to find out more about this possibility?

Thanks in advance (as always!)

Hi could someone plse help me out with this:  Ancestry have provided a folio # for a marriage in NZ in 1890. The couple had several children in NZ so the basics seem correct.

However, I am unable to find any record in NZ BDM for this marriage (I used several permutations for names and also widened the dates)... could anyone shed light on what might be going on here plse?

Name:   George James Gould
  Gender:   Male
Marriage Year:   1890
Relation:   Bridegroom
Spouse:   Emily Kee
Folio Number:   2538

Any help, as always, greatly appreciated!

Europe / Joannes (Giovanni/John) Benussi of Rovigno (In Italy, Austria, France, Croatia)
« on: Thursday 03 December 15 16:17 GMT (UK)  »
Now that I have nailed down his name (several variations) and the place of birth (town stays the same although sometimes spelled Rovinj), but the country changed with the various spoils of war... I am trying to locate John's parents and/or siblings.

I know they were catholic, he was born in 1813.  Moved to the UK, listed as a mariner initially.  He owned and operated a pawnbroker shop and ultimately became a ship owner (The Marinus) in Liverpool until he died in 1904.

He married Jane Beck (b 1820) in Liverpool in 1841.  Their eldest daughter Euphemia (b 1842) married Captain de Angelini, his son Joseph martin (b 1849) took over the business until he sold it.  They also had a daughter Rosa Anna Benussi (b 1848).

Any assistance tracking them in (what is now Croatia) would be appreciated!

Ireland / The Ubiquitous Daniel Murphy
« on: Tuesday 24 November 15 16:40 GMT (UK)  »
Good day everyone!  This is my first post to the "Irish" Board and, I would greatly appreciate the expertise and assistance of people experienced in researching Irish ancestors:)

I have spent a fair bit of time looking into the Irish family in NZ, but now finally, feel ready to start exploring details within Ireland in more depth.

My gr grandfather Daniel Murphy was born in Ireland abt 1854 (a very common christian and surname!!!).  His death cert lists his parents as Timothy Murphy and Ellen Hickey and only lists place of birth as Ireland (no county listed).

Daniel married Johanna Ellen O'Connor (born in Kerry Co in 1856) in NZ in 1877.  She and her sister Annie (and likely brother Simon) emigrated to NZ in 1874 aboard the Ocean Mail.  Johanna's parents are listed as Patrick O'Connor and Ellen Fenton (possibly Finaghty).

I am trying to locate more details about either of their families within Ireland.  I will be traveling there next year and would like to do as much up front work as I can before arriving. I assume the O'Connor's would be easier to trace because I know where they are from.

I checked the Irish genealogy web-site with no luck.  So my questions are:
1) Would the name Hickey be used in another form within Ireland?
2) Is there a way to track down Daniel's family without knowing the county (I suspect it might be Kerry or Cork but that is just a hunch).
3) Can anyone offer any other suggestions that might assist me?

Regards and thanks in advance for any/all assistance:)

Midlothian / When is a moat not a moat?
« on: Monday 05 October 15 18:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi there - I am very pleased to be at this stage of my genealogical research i.e. figuring out where and how the folks actually lived rather than just trying to identify names :)

Some of my ancestors were farmers and in business directories have listed their address in Moat, Roslin (1850's-70's).  I am trying to figure out exactly what that was.  Was there an old moat nearby?  Was the farm called Moat Farm? Was there a village called Moat?

Any assistance, as always, will be appreciated.  I am heading up to Scotland next week (soooo excited) and would like to visit some of the ancestral homes and graveyards (working on the latter bit!).

Regards, Carol
