New Zealand Completed Requests / Morris - missing in NZBDM
« on: Tuesday 29 September 15 15:30 BST (UK)  »
Is it at all likely that NZBDM's records are incomplete?  I have an ancestor (Ellen May Morris) who, according to her marriage certificate, was born in Nelson NZ to parents Henry Morris and Emma Jane Oakly (subsequently remarried to a Pinkney at the time of her daughter's marriage).

No matter how I input the search for her birth record I have come up empty... variations on date (i.e. 5 year span), and searching without a christian name for her; only with the father's, or the mother's names. There were connections in Australia but her marriage cert clearly states Nelson NZ.

Any assistance would be appreciated as always.
Thanks and regards, Carol

Gloucestershire / George and Mary Francis - married and disappeared
« on: Tuesday 08 September 15 15:55 BST (UK)  »
On Feb 19 1860 at Christchurch in the South Hamlet of Glos (near Stroud) - a marriage took place between George Francis (full age bachelor) listed as a ropemaker (his father is listed as John, Francis, a labourer) and Mary Elizabeth Reece (minor b 1839) spinster (with her father listed as William Reece a Harbormaster).

The marriage was witnessed by William and Elizabeth Lloyd.

I have a fair bit of information about Mary prior to this marriage-  but know nothing of George except his father’s name.  There is a George Francis listed as born out of the UK but I have a hunch it is not the correct person.

After the marriage these folks seem to just disappear.  It is possible they ended up in NZ but that is highly speculative.

If anyone could assist with helping to track them down (or finding more out about George’s past) I would be most appreciative!

New Zealand Completed Requests / Roslyn, Dunedin Trams early 1900's
« on: Monday 07 September 15 17:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi there - I believe it is quite likely that one of my relatives was a tram driver for the Roslyn Cable Car line in the early 1900's.

He is listed as an "engineer" which he certainly wasn't (in today's vernacular).  He lived in Roslyn on Ann Street which was close to the tram line so I am inclined to think he was an engine driver and. therefore, would like to explore that idea further.

Could anyone assist with how I might search employment records for the public transportation system?  Any help, as always, much appreciated!

Regards, Carol

Gloucestershire / 1800's Clothing Mills in Stroud and Thrupp areas
« on: Sunday 19 July 15 17:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have several ancestors who appear to have worked in the mills in the Stroud Valley.

I am curious to know if perhaps the National Archives (or another org) might have records from those mills?  E.g. employee records etc.  Does anyone know whether that type of information might be held somewhere (if indeed it has survived)?

Thanks, Carol

Wiltshire / Sorting out my Jane Whale's
« on: Saturday 06 June 15 15:21 BST (UK)  »
Good day - I would really appreciate the guidance of finer minds than my own to sort out an ancestral puzzle for me!

One of my ancestors John Hatter married a Jane Whale in 1848, Calne, Wiltshire at St Andrew Church.  (Unfortunately there is some question about his DOB as well but I will deal with that in another post!)

However, I have two potential Jane Whale's (well possibly three I guess) for the bride and have been unable to sort out which is correct.  If anyone could help by identifying her parents or another useful tidbit I would be most grateful.

The info I have for both is:

South Africa / Paull, My mother would love to know what happened to her father!
« on: Thursday 26 February 15 15:55 GMT (UK)  »
Good day.  My maternal grandfather Eric Desmond Francis Paull (b New Zealand 1907) was a photographer.  He and his 2nd wife Winifred Betty Newman returned to NZ briefly in 1955 (after living in Australia for a number of years).

The last record I have of them is a passenger list for the Dominion Monarch in 1955 which lists he and his wife as traveling to Cape Town.  It is my understanding his wife may have left him and returned to NZ and remarried perhaps in the 1960's.

Aside from that I have no idea what happened to him in South Africa.  There don't seem to be any record of him on the African Databases.  If anyone could assist with this - my mother and I would be most grateful.
