Cornwall / Headstone pic for Walter Paull Died 1888 St Agnes Parish, Cornwall
« on: Monday 31 March 14 00:19 BST (UK)  »
I was visiting the UK recently and managed a quick visit to St Agnes (lovely little town!).  I found the  the parish graveyard (unfortunately the museum attached was closed until Spring I think so I couldn't get a plot plan)... but I did take a photograph of a headstone for a Walter Paull, died Jan 22 1888 - listed his wife as Elizabeth Anne.

If of interest to anyone, I would be happy to provide a copy of the headstone image and a couple of pics of St Agnes (e.g. churches and the town itself) for those researching the town but have no access to it.
Regards, Carol
p.s. I also have a decent/clear pic of a headstone for a Thomas Rillstone B 1812 Died 1867 St Agnes.

Midlothian / George Ainslie - Death, Divorce or Desertion?
« on: Sunday 30 March 14 21:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am going around in circles here.

George Ainslie (B 1814, St Cuthberts, Midlothian) Married (Dec 10 1836) Ann Oughton and had a couple (that I know of and are confirmed) daughters Janet and Margaret.

In 1851 his wife Anne is living with her mother and two daughters.  No sign of George and she eventually marries one of her mother's workers David Neil in 1852.

George seems to have disappeared.  There is a George Ainslie in Kentucky who marries a Mary Thirwell in 1844.  He dies in Kentucky in 1878. But I have not been able to confirm if this is the same George.

If he lived and emigrated he would likely have left Scotland for the States sometime before 1851 (or even prior to 1844 if it is the correct person).

I am not sure if George and Ann would have divorced?  Perhaps he wanted to go to the States and Anne decided to stay in Scotland with their two daughters?  Or whether he died in Scotland and she simply moved in with her mother as a result.

Any assistance with either a death certificate, or immigration records or another avenue I might pursue would be very much appreciated!
Thanks in advance, Carol

New Zealand Completed Requests / Amelia Eliza Brookes 1857 Birth Cert
« on: Sunday 30 March 14 00:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I purchased (in error, and I live and learn) a NZ Birth Cert for an Amelia Eliza Brookes. If anyone is looking for this person I would be happy to transcribe any details (I assume copyright applies).

Aside from her DOB and place of birth - it lists her mother's maiden name and her father's name (no places, or dates of birth for them).

Regards, Carol

I would like to obtain a copy of the police (or court case transcript) for this charge (located at the Dunedin Archive Office apparently).  Could someone advise how I might do that plse?  Thanks very much for any assistance.

Wiltshire / Who was the Lord of the Manor?
« on: Friday 14 March 14 22:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi - my ancestors were agricultural labourers in the 1800's.

I was wondering if there is a way to find out who they worked for?  They were living and operating in the Chittoe, Bromham area of Wilts  (near Devizes).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Wiltshire / Why did the Hatter's die so young?
« on: Friday 24 January 14 02:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi - I realize that people died a lot earlier in the 1800's, but my two relatives were young even by those standards, particularly my 3rd G grandfather.

Edmond and Elizabeth Hatter (nee Grainger/Granger) died quite young and left their three small children orphaned.  I am trying to find out how/why they died.

Edmond Hatter born 1828 (Bromham, Wilts) D 1857 Devizes Wilts age 29
Elizabeth Hatter born 1823 (Bromham, Wilts) D 1861 Bromham Wilts age 36

Is this type of information available anywhere?  Would it be possible to obtain copies of a death certificate?  If anyone could assist I would be most appreciative.  Thanks in advance
Carol

Hi everyone, I had posted on the Oxfordshire Board looking for additional details on an elusive relative!  They have been most helpful and with that assistance, I have been able to narrow the emigration period to between 1871-1875.

Charles Hatter was from the Wiltshire area, an agricultural laborer, born around 1847 to Edmond Hatter and Elizabeth Granger (perhaps Grainger).  He had a younger brother Henry, who it appears stayed in the UK and a younger sister Mary who also apparently stayed in the UK. The kids were orphaned when Charles was around 10 and they lived with the Cottle family for a while.

By 1876 Charles was in the Kakanui North, Otago area marrying Janet Ainslie Messer (that is another story entirely!).  Charles was employed as an agricultural labourer.  I have quite a bit of information on him once in NZ (none of it particularly positive, but it is at least interesting), but I am still at a loss as to when/how he arrived in NZ.  I have searched countless passenger lists to no avail.

If anyone could provide me with ideas on how best to proceed to figure out when, which ship he arrived in NZ on I would be most grateful.
Regards and thanks in advance!
Carol

Oxfordshire / Charles Hatter man of mystery
« on: Thursday 09 January 14 23:36 GMT (UK)  »
Good day to you all.  I have been told on good authority that there are "... some very clever people on this site who are willing to share their knowledge and expertise".  So I come pleading for help:

I have spent the past few months researching a specific branch of our tree.  Due to a fair bit of active subterfuge on the part of some of my ancestors - it has taken this long to even identify who my great grandfather was!  While I have located a couple of potentials, nothing has been concrete enough for me to feel confident in the information. The reality is, we know very little about him despite all our efforts.

Charles Hatter was born in England (his probate docs say in Oxford but I am not convinced this is correct).  Based on his stated age at death i.e. 78 in 1925, his dob should be around 1847.  We know he was an ag labourer, we know he was in New Zealand by 1876 because he married Janet Ainslie Messer in Otago, New Zealand. I have a fair bit of information on him whilst in NZ, but have been unable to figure out how he got there, when, why, or where he came from.

There is a Charles Hatter in the Devizes Wiltshire area, who had a brother Henry (recently I located a probate reference to an Alfred Henry Hatter in NZ but have been unable to find probate records for him.. another work in progress).  The Wilts family seems plausible (aside from the Oxford ref in Charles' probate docs), but I think there are too many inconsistencies to be confident in it.

I have spent countless hours scanning ship passenger lists for all NZ harbours, but to no avail.

If anyone could assist me in figuring out how Charles ended up in NZ, where he came from I would be MOST grateful!! Thanks in advance for any assistance/guidance provided.
