Lanarkshire / Re: Headstone pictures CAMBUSNETHAN CHURCHYARD WISHAW
« on: Monday 26 September 16 12:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi Lodger
Hoping you can assist. I am currently waiting on Scotlandspeople new web site to come up to get the actual death print outs but certain of the area and time frame.
Looking for anything regarding the John GRAY (Born c 1799 - 1801)  who has died between the 1851 - 1861 Census, last living at 15 Burnside Row Cambusnethan. He was married to Elizabeth YARDLEY (various spellings), ( born actually in 1805, but Census give age as between 1800 - 1802) she has died between the 1871 - 1881 Census. 1871 She was living with Daughter Mary Pollok in Binnies Rows Cambusnethan.
I have worked out via familysearch they had the following children:
John Gray c 1826 Cambusnethan
Ann Gray c 1829, Carmichael - married to Hugh Muir
David Gray c 1832 Carmichael
Margaret Gray c 1839 Midlothian
Mary c 1841 Cambusnethan - married to John Pollok

As they were all coal miners I do not expect an MI, most likely buried in Common Ground but would be nice to know just which Cemetery and details if any exist.

I am following up my YEARDLY/YARDLY/YEARDLEY etc family tree and many were in the Lanarkshire areas of Carmichael and Cambusnethan.
Sorry I cannot give you exact dates of death as of yet due to just getting a break through on the family over the weekend and not able to confirm via a certificate.

Hoping this is enough information to assist with any research. I will try and do a PM to give you my personal email address.

Many thanks and I have loved reading all the great work you have done over the years regarding everyone in this cemetery.
Kind regards Ailsa

Hi Goldie61
I am now finding it is paying to order in these extra filmings. Yes I found quite a few that were missing on the Cavers Roxburghshire film, but Nothing extra on the films for Kelso, so still have the empty gaps of knowing children were born there but nothing to confirm baptism. So it does not work for every filming, but so far I am happy with the ones I have found. Just bear in mind I think it depended on who did the original recording, and if they were good at doing it. Mind you still large gaps on everything, due to loss of books, not recorded, damage from fire or water or mice etc. I have also found on these second filming's that sometimes the records are way out of order to what they should be, so had to look carefully at the films which can take some time. As an example on the Cavers Roxburgh one, I found the baptisms I was looking for in the previous Vol and not in the Vol that they were suppose to be. Same with some of the marriages.
Yes I love Scotslandsplaces as well, so great to find and know the exact spelling of places, maps, and Yes I have found people I have been looking for in the various indexes as well.
Thanks for letting me about 4th Oct as my sub for them has run out at present. All the best with finding your ancestors as well.

Sorry what I mean is the Second Lot of Filming that was done of the OPR's by the LDS in 1952. It is these lot of Films that have not been indexed nor on Scotlandspeople. This is where you can find missing entries, like I have found previously on the Roxburghshire films I have looked at.
When you search the LDS catalogue it will usually give you something like the following. Even though it says to order in the first filming first, it is not a hassle to get the second filming in to view

Hope the attachment comes through ok.

Would be wonderful if SP & all the parishes that still hold records could get together to get these digitized, but we will see maybe one day.
I have sent in many many copies of entries missed on the digitization or filming to SP over the years and have yet to see one of them come up. They keep telling me on the next upgrade it will be done, still not there, But at least I do have the copies from the OPR Films I have ordered in to view.

Many thanks to both Forfarian and Falkyrn. I will try and see if the Kirk Session records exist for the area, might be my last hope of finding info regarding the burials I am looking for.
Sorry if I mislead about the Roxburghshire films - was just using the second filming done by LDS in 1952 as an example. I have lots of research in that area as well and the LDS advised to order in the second lot of filming if you do not find an entry on the first films, and YES I have found plenty that have not been digitized as of yet. They told me these films are not indexed, so again you will not find the entries on Familysearch nor on Scotlandspeople, so I have found it has paid off to order in the second lot of films and obtained entries not seen before. Hence was my question about anyone having ordered these second lot of films in to see if anything extra on them. But think I will head for the Kirk Sessions - Scotlandspeople have been saying about putting them up for years, but one day I hope they go on line, as I live in Australia so not easy for me to look at them or get someone to do the research for me from here. Thanks for the replies, appreciated. Ailsa

Hi, I am looking at ordering in some of the films regarding Whitburn to try and locate a burial record of a couple of ancestors that died pre 1855. The films are giving me an indication that Burial money only goes up to 1830. Can anyone who has ordered in the following film No's from the LDS confirm this please. Film 1066639 & 40.  Also are there any more burial records on the later films done. I have found other records for the Roxburghshire on these later films and wondered if anyone had viewed them as well. No 102997-8.
I am looking for burials between 1851 - 1855 - Not on Scotlandspeople site.
These are also Not in the West Lothian MI pre 1855 Booklet Vol 2 done by Angus and Alison Mitchell. They were poor, and husbands were coal miners and one was already deceased.
Many thanks regarding help in this area. Ailsa

Roxburghshire / Re: Need help regarding the Place name on a Baptism
« on: Monday 12 September 16 08:32 BST (UK)  »
After more researching, I decided to see if I could find a connection between Alexander Cairns who married Margaret Miller and the John Cairns who married Janet Miller (Janet and Margaret are sisters). Well I have a good possible and downloaded the baptisms from Scotlandspeople today. Both entries are following each other and the Parents are William Cairns in Gripknowe and Isobel Miller. (Kirkton Parish)
Now I spent hours trying to find Gripknowe on any maps, from the BFHS it says this place was known in the 1841 Census. Now found that the place may now be called Lightpipe -
If that is the case, then this could be correct, as Margaret Cairns with son William appear at BirkwoodFoot on the 1841 Census - this is not far from Stobs and also Lightpipe on the maps.

With Helen's idea I have also played around with the Capital letters, and even though it really does look like Fleethaugh - I was wondering if it could be Priesthaugh or even the Teviothaugh as previously suggested. Priesthaugh is an area where the Millers also worked, so it could make sense.
This family certainly is giving a good lesson at learning the place names of the area.

Again thanks for everyone's assistance.

Wow!!! I had to go away yesterday so have not had time to get back until now. You guys are wonderful. Yes I love the maps, I use them all the time and could not find anything.
I have gone back to the images I have printed out, and YES they are transcriptions all written in the same hand writing, recording them again I think into a second book. Reason I say this is these entries along with a number of others including the parents marriage, are NOT on Scotlandspeople, Nor on FamilySearch, Nor on the original microfilm I had ordered in. The LDS advised me to order in the second filming, of which this is Film No 102285. They are way out of order on the film as well compared to where they should be, but they are there. The LDS advised that these second filming films are not indexed, hence reason not on Scotlandspeople or FamilySearch. So remember that if you cannot find an entry, get the next films in.
So I have a feeling that McGroger might have hit the nail on the head, and it could be a transcription error for Teviothaugh.
Though I also like the ideas from Ruskie and Gadget regarding the meanings of the place.

Background: I do not know at this stage where Alexander Cairns comes from, nor his age. He had died before the 1841 Census somewhere that I cannot locate at this stage and may not either. Margaret remarried in 1844 to Robert Johnston, and there were no other children born to Alexander and Margaret Cairns that I know of or can find.
I have been following up on the children of Alexander and Margaret - William the son, became a Woollen Manufacturer in Langholm and then after he went bankrupt, move to the USA.
Helen last appears on the 1851 Census with Mother and Robert Johnston, then been told that she died young - still working on that one.
I have a feeling that John Cairns who married one of Margaret's sisters Janet Miller, maybe a brother to Alexander but John also died between the 1851 and 1861 Census, and as I cannot locate his death, suspect before 1855.

I would like to thank Ruskie (love the maps) Gadget, lots of ideas re the place names and McGroger who has given me lots of food for thought. I still have lots to work on regarding these families. The MILLERS were the weavers at Old Northhouse, and many of the family stayed within the walking sort of distance of each other during the early years.

Back to looking at more records to see what I can find, but think I will take note of what everyone has said and record what is written but with explanations next to it regarding the area names as well as the transcription possible error for Teviothaugh.  It all makes sense.
Many thanks guys you answered my query so quickly.

Roxburghshire / Need help regarding the Place name on a Baptism
« on: Saturday 10 September 16 03:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi, have attached a copy of the Baptism regarding twins William and Helen Cairns baptised in 1825. I obtained this entry from the CAVERS microfilm I ordered in, as it is not showing on Scotlandspeople, (quite a few on this particular film on showing).
Anyway I am stuck on the place name of FLEETHAUGH  - that is what it appears to be for me.
I have looked on Scotlandsplaces and found nothing like this. I have looked at the writing of the other baptisms and it is definitely and F to start with
Can anyone give me an idea of where this might be.
The parents Alexander Cairns and Margaret Miller married in  Dec 1823 - is on the same film registered in Cavers, Alexander at that stage said he was from Teindside in Hawick parish and Margaret was from the Cavers Parish.
Alexander's occupation appears to be of a labourer - so most likely working on farms in the area.

Any ideas of the place would be appreciated.

Thanks Eric and GR2, I know the registers are a mess just from looking at them so you do have to go through them very carefully and not just by the dates and also spellings can be wrong to what has been transcribed as well - all part of the fun I suppose. I will so a search and see where the registers are held and if they can still be searched.
thanks again.
