Durham / London Gazette access ??
« on: Wednesday 10 August 16 05:27 BST (UK)  »

Its very recently come to my attention that gt gfather Robert John MORTERS was in bankruptcy trouble whilst living in Co Durham along with his father in law, Charles WILLIAMSON
There was an apparent  newspaper report in the London Gazette 7 Nov 1873 . Try as I  might I haven't been unable to find that particular day on line

Robert John and Adelaide MORTERS  came from Norfolk . They moved north around Christmas 1872and lived at 16 Vine St Sunderland
They had 3 children born there and the eldest ,Herbert, died there 5 Dec 1873.

They left  England for Australia in 1878 and settled here.

The WILLIAMSON clan stayed around  Co Durham

Would love a little local help , please !

Durham / BAINBRIDGE to Kurri Kurri NSW Australia
« on: Thursday 02 July 15 09:20 BST (UK)  »
Edward BAINBRIDGE m Margaret COFFEY  3 qrt 1896 Houghton  Co Durham They had 6 chn to 1910.
In 1926 this family boarded the P & O line Orsova and migrated to  Kurri Kurri  NSW ( Coal mining area)

Sadly Edward died soon after   in  late 1927.  NSW death indexes state parents names. Accordingly Edward is  possibly son of James & Frances.    He was b Willington  3rd qrt 1873.

Try as I might  I cant find  a James BAINBRIDGE marrying a FRANCES  or Edward B in the 1881 or 1891 census .  Hes in the 1901 ( under BAMBRIDGE) and 1911 as BAINBRIDGE . His daughter was named Rhoda  so that helped !

Need the loan of new eyes please as am going round in circles

Hertfordshire / Land title/ house ownership records??
« on: Friday 18 April 14 05:17 BST (UK)  »
Hope Rootschatters can help with this query ?

How do I found out about house ownership ?? My NORRIS gt gparents lived in a terrace house in Montague Rd ,Berkhamstead from c 1888 to mid 1960s
Neither  left a will. Gt gfather Fred d   died there in 1941  , & Gt gmother Frances   27 Jun 1950 .My grandmother Daisy BELLIS nee NORRIS continued to live there till mid 1960s .  By some means she made over the ownership of this house to my father ,who subsequently sold it

It took me quite a while to find its current owner and then it took him over 1 year to reply to my snail letter ! He has since sent me a few photos  but isn't interested in helping me solve this ownership puzzle.
 Fingers crossed

Hertfordshire / New Mill Chapel ??
« on: Thursday 02 January 14 12:35 GMT (UK)  »
My gt gparents, James and Ann REDDING nee GROVE married at New Mill Chapel by the rites of the Particular Baptists by Rev John STATHAM 24 May 1858 . I got copy of this m cert some years ago automatically assuming the New Mill referred to was near Tring / Tring Station and filed it away

Maybe I got the wrong New Mill as apparently there was /is a New Mill in the Chesham area as well ???
The cert does say District of Berkhamstead but then has Counties of Herts & Bucks?

From childhood memory  there wasn't much at New Mill . But was there a Baptist Chapel there c 1858 ?

Many thanks

Hertfordshire / Streets in Berkhamstead ?
« on: Friday 22 June 12 22:46 BST (UK)  »

I was filling in a few  twigs in the family tree last night and  was surprised to come across a 1881 ref to Ellesmere Road
I remember this road well from childhood and think these terrace houses were  built later ?
My grandmother lived at #54.

Ellesmere Road runs parallel to the railway line  .

Would appreciate any ideas on how to find out  about the street names of Berkhamptead ( of many spellings !)  ??

Some like Chapel Street , Victoria Road, Cheshams Road are more of less obvious , but what of Doctors Commons Road , Ravens Lane ??
