Berkshire / Selwood Purchett and Bosbury
« on: Wednesday 28 March 12 10:26 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Can someone suggest what places are meant on the following 1881 LDS obvious mistransciptions

It will probably be somewhere around the Tilehurst, Bradfield area but I have run out of ideas.

Jane SELWOOD   Dau   U   Female   8   Purchett, Berkshire, England   Scholar
James SELWOOD   Son   U   Male   3   Bosbury, Berkshire, England   Scholar

I have tried the obvious of looking at the actual page and comparing the letters, the places do look like Purchett and Bosbury. Somehow the enumerator has also got father Isaac Selwood clearly as Jacob.

In 1891  Jane says born Reading and James born Ham Surrey, which is where they were living in 1881 and onwards.

I would like to find their baptisms but don't know where to look.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Charlo families Portmouth and environs and IOW
« on: Monday 19 March 12 02:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
This is following on from a thread "Thomas Plummer Boyle and wives, Portsea"
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=586571.new

I am trying to peice together some of the Charlo (various spellings) family in the Portsmouth area. My maternal Saunders married into them.

My particular quest at the moment is to find a baptism for a Henry Charlo about 1824 to 1830 in Gosport, Alverstoke, or Portsea
Henry died in 1887 age 57 in Portsea but his age in the 1881 census puts him born 1824. In 1871 age 41 (b 1830) and in 1861 age 35 (b 1826) Haven't found him earlier than this.

At present I have him as son of William Charlo 1787 and Mary Norton who marr 1807 Gosport with 6 siblings.

William 1787 had a brother, Simon 1790 Gosport who marr Elizabeth Goorey in 1810 and had 7 children.
My Henry could belong to Simon although I don't think so.
Can anyone help me prove my Henry's parents?

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Thomas Plummer Boyle and wives, Portsea
« on: Sunday 11 March 12 11:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
Thomas Plummer Boyle 1810 Portsea marr Mary Elizabeth Saunders 1816  in  1834 in Portsea.
In 1852 he remarried Elizabeth Charity Hobbs in Tunbridge Reg Dist.
He died in 1862 and Elizabeth in 1905 after remarrying to George Howard Hester.
I have Thomas with Elizabeth in 1861 but I am more interested in Mary Elizabeth Saunders and whether they had any children. I have a possible death registration for Mary Elizabeth in 1859.
Can someone find the him and/or Mary in 1851 or 1841 for me please.
In 1861 he said he was a retired pensioner gunner so he may not be with Mary, but abroad.

Armed Forces / Chelsea Pensioner 1851
« on: Monday 05 March 12 09:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I have an ancestor, William Leadbeater,  who in 1851 in Berkshire was aged 77 and described as an aglab and Chelsea Pensioner.
Can anyone tell me how I might go about finding more about his Service. Not something I have researched before in that time frame, so I don't know where to start.

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / 1851 James and Hannah Goddard
« on: Tuesday 14 February 12 12:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
Could someone do a lookup for me in 1851 - probably in Burghclere - for
James Goddard 1808 Bucklebury
Wife Hannah? about 1813
and any children.
James may have children from his first marriage with him
Ann 1834
Charles 1835
Ellen 1839
Mary 1843
Hannah 1844
Alfred 1845
All born Burghclere.
I am mostly trying to find where his second wife originated. She was widow Smith when she married James but died in 1857 so is not on later censuses.
Thanks

Berkshire Completed Look ups / Wigmore Bucklebury and Bradfield area COMPLETE
« on: Monday 13 February 12 07:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I hope someone can help me. I am returning to look at my Wigmores of Bradfield, Bucklebury and the vicinity. They weave in and out of my tree several times and now I have found another link.

I need to know whose child, Gilbert Wigmore 1895 Bucklebury was.

Because of the address of Nuttage Gate on the 1901/1911 familysearch entries, I think it was William Wigmore 1855 and Harriet nee Lock.
Gilbert married one of my Crook members in 1923, but the relationship is quite distant, so I would prefer not to have to buy the certificate.
Can someone look up the 1901 for me, please, and tell me if I am right.  Thanks

London and Middlesex / John and Emma Whitcombe Greenwich/Deptford
« on: Thursday 02 February 12 23:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Could someone find me a John D(avid) Whitcombe - spelt several ways in 1891- or his wife, Emma.
Below is where he was in 1881 but by 1901 he appears to have left his wife, but his new lady,  Elizabeth Jane nee Saunders/Tallett, he actually never married. By 1911 she had married Robert Henry Davis.
Emma Whitcombe nee Potton is on the 1901 Index as someone's housekeeper and the 1891 may help me find if she and John D. had any children.  They may well have got together again by 1911 as I have found deaths for John in 1924 and Emma in 1923, both in Greenwich Reg Dist.

Wiltshire / Ernest SMITH Ogbourne St Andrews
« on: Friday 20 January 12 15:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
Is it possible for someone to access the 1871 census for Ogbourne St Andrew and St George, please.
I am looking for the family of Richard SMITH 1826 and Sarah 1828. The children in the 1861 familysearch pages are all born Ogbourne St Andrew;
James 1848, George 1849. Jane 1852, David 1856, Deborah 1857, Richard 1860. These completely coincide with the next of kin on Ernest Smith 1861's service records, so at last I have found his family. He served in South Africa and India in two terms from 1885.
He married Gertrude Catherine Stratford in 1909 in Bix, Oxon on his return to the UK. He worked in the sawmill there until his death in 1929. Gertrude died in 1923 of epilepsy. The 1911 Index gave me my starting point. Ernest was my uncle's stepfather.
Any help in tracing and following these Smiths (needle in a haystack job) my cousin and I would be grateful for.

Oxfordshire / Richard Sellwood Eye and Dunsden
« on: Thursday 05 January 12 16:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
Could someone look up the 1901 census to find who a Richard Sellwood in Eye and Dunsden was boarding with, please. I have found the reference on familysearch. Although the age of 42 is wrong I think he is mine. He died in 1902.
