Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Rachel FRANKLAND and derivatives burial 1856
« on: Saturday 13 April 13 07:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I know I am possibly asking a lot as Chippenham Reg covers a wide area. However, is it possible to find a burial to go with this registration.
I don't particularly want to buy the cert if I can help it, but I need to know the lady's age.

Berkshire / Somerscales fish (and chip) shops in Reading
« on: Wednesday 20 March 13 00:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
All the talk about the shoe shops in Reading Broad Street (Shoe Shop, Broad Street, Reading   http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,446291.0.html) has reminded me of my first job after leaving school in 1960. At Barratts shoe shop, also in Broad Street. I had been temporarily transferred after 2 weeks in the Oxford shop, all daily expenses paid.

However, that is not my reason for this missive.  I am reminded that I did not finish my research into the Somerscales of Reading.

Isaac Daniel Somerscales 1829-1914 actually lived in Caversham but he and his stepson, Henry Cassell 1875-1950, who took his stepfather's surname on returning from forced exile as an emigree child in Canada, had a wet and dry fish (and chip)  shop. First in Broad Street, Reading, then in Union Street, and  then (from Kellys Directories)
1952, 1954, 1956 - Commercial Addresses: (of Somerscales, Ltd., Fried Fish Shops)
          103 Caversham Road, Reading
          431 Oxford Road, Reading
          437 Basingstoke Road, Reading
64 & 65 St. Marys Butts, Reading (Regd. Office)
Henry, however, died in 1950, so either the business name was kept or another member of the family took it over.
Does anyone remember any of these shops or know anything about the Somerscales, or where I might find out more.
Isaac's second wife was Helen Herbert Dixon 1846-1917 whose first husband was Thomas Cassell 1842-1884. The latter was nephew of my 2nd great grandfather, Daniel Cassell. From evidence I have, Helen seems to have been a bit of a social climber.
Any snippets of info about the shops, and people's knowledge of them etc. would be gratefully received.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Mary Elizabeth Boyle nee Saunders bap 1816 Portsea
« on: Thursday 28 February 13 13:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
Please can someone help me find the death or burial of Mary Elizabeth Boyle nee Saunders. She married  Thomas Plummer Boyle 1810- 1862 in 1834 in Portsea  but I cannot find them in the 1841 or 1851 census.
Mary Elizabeth was baptised in Portsea Feb 1816, but she might not have been born there as some of her siblings were born in London, but also baptised in Portsea.

In 1861 Thomas Plummer Boyle has married again to Elizabeth Charity Hobbs and was living in Portsea. He is termed a retired pensioner gunner so in the previous censuses he could have been at war somewhere. He died the following year but Elizabeth lived until 1905, having married again.

I thought I had found Mary Elizabeth's death in 1859 in Portsea but the certificate shows that this Mary is aged 40, wife of a James Boyle, a corporal in the Royal Limerick Militia at Anglesey Barracks, Portsea.  If anyone needs  this certificate, I am happy to send it to them.

Hello,
Can someone tell me if it is possible to find details of a divorce in the years between 1903 and 1908? Where would I look?
The people involved are Henry Thomas Selwood and Elizabeth Harris, the former  of Ham, Surrey who married in 1903. I know they divorced because it says so on his second marriage cert to Monica Frances Cook in 1908.
Both the latter are buried at Teddington Cemetery.  I find it very strange that a marriage could take place in 1903 and a divorce by 1908 at that period in time.

Australia / Gamlin from Reading Berks to Australia
« on: Saturday 08 December 12 22:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I am looking to find anyone in Australia who is researching GAMLIN. Notably, Jack 1885 Cardiff, Wales, wife Rose Ellen 1888 Thatcham, Berks, sons John William 1909 Reading Berks and Clifford 1910 Reading.
Jack went out from the UK on the THEMISTOCLES  in 1911 and his wife and children the following year on the   BALLARAT. I have no idea where they ended up. They were cousins of mine via my father's SELLWOOD family connected to WICKENS.

Norfolk / Baxter Brandistone
« on: Thursday 15 November 12 23:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I am revisiting my Baxters of Booten and Brandiston and area and have got stuck.  I am trying to find where Henry Baxter b about 1761 buried 1847 Booten and Phoebe Rumbold b abt 1758 buried 1842 Brandiston came from. I have a fair bit of info on their forward family. In 1841 Phoebe seems to have been called Sarah but her death cert does say Phoebe.
I think it is a long shot, but can anyone help?  Not sure where to go from here.
Yours

Norfolk / Joseph/William Allen - Erpingham
« on: Wednesday 17 October 12 06:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I am trying to unravel my Allens of Erpingham and Thurgarton. Below is the family in 1841  My great grandmother was Emma
ALLEN, William M 35 1806  Norfolk as all
ALLEN, Sarah F 30 1811
ALLEN, Joseph M 10
ALLEN, Mary F 7
ALLEN, Emma F 5
ALLEN, Elijah M 1
Piece: 760 Book/Folio: 5 Page: 4
Registration District: Erpingham
Civil Parish: Thurgarton
Address: Thurgarton, Thurgarton

My sticking points are father William's death and burial after 1851, and where was Joseph (bapt Erpingham 1830 ) in 1851? In 1861 he is in St Luke, London and called William and says married to a Jessie, but by 1871 he is married to a Mary Ann b 1830 Aldborough.
From 1881, still in London, onwards, he is calling himself Joseph again. I haven't identified either his or his wife/wives deaths yet, but neither  appear to be around in 1911.

Can anyone help? Allen is such a common surname that I am going round in circles.
