Derbyshire / Henry Broadley DOUGLAS
« on: Friday 08 July 22 14:44 BST (UK)  »
Henry Broadley DOUGLAS was my 4x GGF, but I know precious little about him.

I first heard of his existence, when he was mentioned on the marriage licence of my 3x GGM Henrietta DOUGLAS, who married George GETTLIFFE on 30 Apr 1814 in Derby.

Research reveals that there was a marriage between Henry Broadley DOUGLAS and Henrietta/Harriette MORRIS on 08 May 1792 at St Andrew Holborn. I believe that this couple are my 4x GGP, as there is a death on 25 Jan 1842 at Carlisle Street, Westminster of one Henrietta DOUGLAS. The informant on the death certificate is Selina PROCTOR, the married daughter of George GETTLIFFE and Henrietta DOUGLAS, so the granddaughter of Henrietta DOUGLAS née MORRIS.

Henry Broadley DOUGLAS is dead by 1842, as Henrietta DOUGLAS is described as the widow of Henry Broadley DOUGLAS, an inn-keeper.

There are numerous records ascertaining to Henry Broadley DOUGLAS on the various websites, many relating to insolvency and imprisonment. It is difficult, however, to assign these to my ancestor, at there appear to be many people called Henry Broadley DOUGLAS despite the distinctive name.

In particular, there is a burial of an Henry Broadley DOUGLAS aged 52 in Leek in Staffordshire on 22 Apr 1826. This is tempting as Leek is very close to Ashbourne and Compton where George GETTLIFFE and Henrietta DOUGLAS was based. This burial could be connected to a baptism at Witton Hall in Witton Le Wear in Durham of a Henry Broadley DOUGLAS on 29 Aug 1773 to Charles Joseph and Henrietta Douglas.

I think I am in desperate need of someone to help sort out the many different - and sometimes conflicting - references to Henry Broadley DOUGLAS.

Devon / John FARNELL
« on: Thursday 07 July 22 14:42 BST (UK)  »
John FARNELL married Adah AYRES/AYERS on 25 May 1791 in Kentisbeare. The couple went on to have at least five children together: May (1791), John (1793), Emily (1795), Jenny (1797) and James (1799).

Adah appears to have been born in 1767 in Kentisbeare, baptised 15 Nov 1767. She was buried in Kentisbeare on 05 Aug 1827.

John is more of a problem. I assume he was born and died in Kentisbeare, but have no evidence for this assumption.

I cannot find an appropriate birth or death. In the Devon burials records on FindMyPast there are a number of possible burials for John Farnell, but none seem possible:

buried in 1736 - clearly too early.
born 1707 & buried in 1799 - would have been 84 when his first child was born
born 1738 & buried 1826 - would have been 53 when his first child was born
born 1807 & buried 1834 - clearly too late
born 1792 & buried 1883 - this is John, his son born 1793

Help with tracking down a birth and death for John would be appreciated.

Devon / What happened to Emily and Jenny FARNELL?
« on: Thursday 07 July 22 14:24 BST (UK)  »
Emily (bap 07 Jun 1795) and Jenny (bap 19 Dec 1797) were both born in Kentisbeare. Their parents were John FARNELL and Adah AYRES/AYERS.

They seem to disappear from the record after their baptisms. Any help in discovering what happened to them would be appreciated.

Surrey / Missing death entry
« on: Monday 04 July 22 17:33 BST (UK)  »
Hannah MARTIN married George RIDDLE on 04 Feb 1833 at Chiddingfold.

Hannah died in 1840 aged 36 and was buried on 26 Oct 1840 at st Mary's, Chiddingfold.

Her death must have been recorded in Q4 1840, so why can't I find a death record in the index for Hannah RIDDLE.

I suspect that there is an obvious transcription mistake which I am not picking up on, so I would be grateful if someone could point out my glaring mistake.

PS If anyone can find a baptism for Hannah, that too would be good.

Derbyshire / Ann GETTLIFFE (née BRADBURY)
« on: Wednesday 29 June 22 15:02 BST (UK)  »
Robert GETTLIFFE (c1756-1820) and Ann BRADBURY (c1756-?) were married on 13 May 1777 at St Oswald in Ashbourne. Robert was a tailor.

It is believed that Robert was born in Ashbourne, though I have yet to find a baptism record. It is similarly believed that Ann was born in Leek, though once again no baptism record has been found.

Robert died in 1820 in Ashbourne, leaving behind a will leaving his estate to his wife and four surviving children. Following his death his widow posted a notice in the local paper stating that the business will continue.

Some years later there is a notice in the Derby Mercury of 18 Feb 1832 selling off a number of premises belonging to various members of the family - see attachment. I am wondering whether this is because Ann has died and the estate is being sold so that it can be shared as provided for in the will. I cannot, however, find a death or burial for Ann.

I would really like to find baptism records for both Robert and Ann. My biggest wish, however, is to find a death or burial for Ann.

Derbyshire / Death of Mary GRAY
« on: Tuesday 28 June 22 15:04 BST (UK)  »
Mary GRAY née GASKIN was born in 1823 in Willington, Burton-upon-Trent.

She married John GRAY in 1845 in Derby.

The 1871 census finds the couple living with some of their children at Spa Lane, St Werburgh, Derby.

In 1872, John dies at Spa Lane.

I then lose track of what happened to Mary. I thought I had found a death for Mary at Q2 1899 Burton on Trent 6b 256, but it turns out that this Mary was the widow of a Thomas GRAY. The other details do not seem to fit either.

I can't find Mary in the 1881, 1891 or 1901 censuses. So she may well have been dead by 1881, though I can't find an appropriate death.

I thought it would help if I could find a burial for either John or Mary, but sadly I haven't been successful in that endeavour. There is a burial in 1907 in Holmesfield, but once again this is not my Mary as census records reveal a Holmesfield rather than Willington birth.

Derbyshire / Children of William GASKIN & Sarah HUNT
« on: Tuesday 21 June 22 12:00 BST (UK)  »
William and Sarah married in 1802 in Marston on Dove and settled in Willington. As far as I know they had 9 children: Ann (1804), Jane (1806), Harriet (1808), Fanny (1811), William (1813), Sarah (1816), Samuel (1818), Elizabeth (1820) and Mary (1823). I am having trouble tracing some of these children:

Jane who married Thomas HODGKINSON died in 1883 in Derby, but I can't locate a burial.

Harriet and Fanny both seem to disappear after their respective baptisms in 1808 and 1811.

Samuel appears not to have been baptised, though there is a burial record for him in Willington, aged 4 months.

Elizabeth who married Peter MAY died in 1900 in Willington, but I can't locate a burial.

Mary who married John GRAY died in 1899 in Willington, but I can't locate a burial.

Any help would be appreciated.

Devon / Whatever happened to . . .
« on: Sunday 19 June 22 18:07 BST (UK)  »
Robert EVELEIGH and Betty ELWORTHY married in AWliscombe in 1793. As far as I can ascertain, they had 9 children: John (b1795), Dinah (b1797), Robert (b1799), Melony or Meliora (b 1802), Betty (b 1804), Mary (b 1806), Sarah (b 1808), Thomas (b 1811) and Patience (b 1814). There are baptism records on FindMyPast for all nine children, so they definitely existed.

I have managed to trace Dinah, Robert and Patience. I have found their marriages, deaths and burials. And I believe that the Melony born in 1802 is the Meliora who died aged 18 in 1820.

The other five children, however, are a puzzle. I cannot find anything on John, Betty, Mary. Sarah or Thomas after their baptisms. Did they die young as infants? Or did they survive to marry and die at a later date?

Any help would be appreciated.

London and Middlesex / William & Dinah LANGTON
« on: Wednesday 01 June 22 10:14 BST (UK)  »
William LANGTON (c1780-1838) and Dinah DANIELS née SHAW (c1768-1865) were married at All Saints in Edmonton on 05 Mar 1805. Apparently William was a bachelor and Dinah a widow, her first husband John DANIELS having died in 1803.

I have no idea where William was born. I have also been unable to confirm where Dinah was born, though there is a suggestion explored in another thread that she was born in Hitchin, the daughter of Joseph and Rose SHAW. It would be great if anyone could clarify the births of this couple.

As far as I can ascertain, the couple had four children: Rebecca, Diana, Rose and George. The following is what I know about the four children.

Rebecca was baptised on 17 Feb 1805 at All Saints in Edmonton, having been born on 06 Feb 1805. Nothing else is known.

Diana died in 1808 aged 1 and was buried on 01 Jul 1808 at All Saints in Edmonton. Nothing else is known.

Rose was born on 17 Sep 1810 and baptised on 30 Sep 1810 at All Saints in Edmonton. She married John ABERY on 25 Oct 1833 at Hornsey Rise. She died on 25 Aug 1880 at Winchmore Hill and was buried on 30 August 1880 at All Saints in Edmonton.

George William was born on 03 Jan 1813 and baptised on 26 Dec 1813 at All Saints in Edmonton. As far as I know, he never married. There is a suggestion that he married a Mary HALL in Shoreditch in 1835, but I suspect that this is another George LANGTON, though the name of the father is correct. According to the 1851 census which finds him in Edmonton Workhouse, he is a blind pauper. He dies in the Workhouse the following year on 26 Mar 1852 and was buried on 29 Mar 1852 at All Saints in Edmonton. According to his death certificate, he had no occupation and was blind from infancy.

As you can see my information, about the four children is very sketchy and I would welcome some help in fleshing it out.
