Thanks for the replies. All very helpful, but I'm still not sure about whether or not I should expect to find death certificates for my relatives. They drowned at sea and as far as I am aware their bodies were never recovered.

Does anybody know the actual rules about the circumstances under which death certificates are or are not issued?

There must be a set of rules or guidelines.

Sorry, but I am still confused. What exactly are the circumstances when death certificates are issued and when they are withheld?

In this case, I'm fairly sure that the bodies were either not recovered or were unrecognisable. Does this mean that there are no death certificates?

I would have thought that the fact that they appear on the BMD register held by the NA would mean that it is recognised that they drowned. In which case, surely there should be death certificates?

I would be grateful if someone could spell out for me the exact circumstances under which certificates are or are not issued.

Many thanks for any help.

I found a record at National Archives (BT158 04 Folio 199), using their deaths at sea link.

But what I really want is the death certificates. Were such things actually ever issued if the bodies were not recovered?

Their names were: John TAPLIN (1826-1873) and Caroline TAPLIN (1827-1873).
The Northfleet sank on the night of 22 January 1873.
Two daughters also died: Sarah TAPLIN (1860-1873) and Caroline TAPLIN (1862-1873).
Another daughter Maria TAPLIN (1862-1879) was rescued, and even commemorated in a song of the day!

Two of my Great Great Grandparents were drowned in the English Channel, when in January 1873 the British registered Northfleet, which was carrying labourers to Tasmania to build the Hobart railway, sank following a collision. To the best of my knowledge the bodies were never recovered. One of their young daughters was one of the few to survive. Over 200 perished.

I have found a record of their deaths at the National Archives, but have been unable to obtain death certificates from the GRO. How does one obtain death certificates for those drowned at sea?

Looks interesting, but I'm being told that the individual prison pages are no longer supported by the BT server!

Hi

According to the 1911 census, my Great Grandfather was an inmate in Wandsworth Prison at the time of the census. For obvious reasons, I would like to know the details behind his conviction. I would therefore welcome suggestions, as to how I go about finding the details of his arrest, trial and conviction. I assume that there are records of prisoners in Wandsworth, in particular when they were imprisoned, why they were imprisoned, and when they were released. Any ideas about how I access these records?
