New on Find My Past
US Servicemen in North Devon, England 1943-1945
Search for over 5,000 US servicemen who were stationed in North Devon during the Second World War. The records consist of an original visitor book kept by the local servicemen’s club which recorded the servicemen’s names, date of signing, service number, location details, hometowns, and states. Images may also reveal additional notes and the servicemen’s signatures.

The book was photographed and transcribed by volunteers of Devon Family History Society to whom we offer our thanks for their hard & sometimes difficult work.

Looks like it opened in 1891, in Cleveland Road. You really need access to the British Newspaper Archive (part of Find My Past). Free access is available at Devon FHS Tree House in Exeter (http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/treehouse.htm) and at Devon Heritage Centre also in Exeter (https://swheritage.org.uk/devon-archives/)

Over 76,000 new records have been added to the Find My Past collection of Devon Social & Institutional Records. Search this extraordinarily rich set of records to find paupers and vagrants, apprentices, peddlers and tradesmen. Find out if they got married, were vaccinated against smallpox or got Christmas presents while their father was fighting WW1. Explore more than two centuries of social history to find rare details of the lives of ordinary people. This collection of records has been gathered by the Devon Family History Society from a wide range of local records covering daily life in the 18th and 19th centuries. There are 132 separate sources mainly covering working life, but also containing a fascinating collection of criminal and poor law records, early local censuses, town lists, photographs and even admission registers for a home for "Friendless and Fallen Girls".

Are you a member of Devon Family History Society? high quality images of St Sidwell parish registers are available in the members' area of the Society's website, as are 51 other parishes.
The Gale/Gill baptism is there- Exeter St.Sidwell: 3429A-PR-1-5_0276. The Pye/Page entry in the transcription could be either but the surname is definitely given as GALE.
