The Common Room / Re: 3 features that I would like Ancestry to implement.

While Ancestry may not provide confirmation they always allow the amendment as a variation which I think is actually better.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: 1939 population register
« on: Monday 26 September 22 11:50 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for someone who was not where I'd expect at the time of the population register in 1939: John Rhosydd Williams. I have found a possible entry for him in Denbigh, with letter code ZJDE and in the final column the code PWC598/9864. The man I am looking for was a grocer, but became a minister of religion in 1924. The man listed as John R. Williams in Denbigh was a grocer's ledger clerk. They were both born in 1885. Can anyone, please, interpret the two codes to help me confirm or discard this possible identification?

The codes aren't going to help you - one's a location and IIRC the PWC is some kind of War Bond.

The information that can confirm it is the Date of Birth so get his Birth Certificate if it's important to match the entries.

The Common Room / Re: Publican/Licensed Victualler, mid 1800s, Essex, England

Licensed victuallers would be running/ managing / owning the pub. If you were just pulling pints you were a barman/maid.

Based on probate valuations in my own tree, licensed victuallers could do pretty nicely, more likely to do so than butchers

The Common Room / Re: Another annoying new Ancestry feature - Notifications

Even more silly!

I had a long list earlier this week and just dismissed them!

I went into Ancestry this evening and there was a little red dot with a 1 on the notifications icon

When I clicked on it, this is what I got:

Why click it?

I've found that it really doesn't like deaths and probate in different years.

Can you bypass all the search parameters to just enter the details you need because the search is hopeless and both Ancestry and FindMyPast provide much better results

The Common Room / Re: Marriage of minors

The standard registers between, I think, 1813-1837 do have a place for "with Consent of ________' which is sometimes filled in when they involve a minor but is often blank or just 'of parents'
