Ireland / Jeremiah McGrath
« on: Thursday 06 October 16 02:03 BST (UK)  »
Jeremiah McGrath is my Great Grandfather, very little is known of his background in Ireland befor emigrating to Australia around 1860. He was the only child (born 1840) and his father's Christian name was possibly Lawrence, his mother's name before her marriage had been Margaret Lamb (Jeremiah's parents). They lived in Waterford and were farmers. Jeremiah was very young, probably about three years old when his parents died. An aunt and uncle, who like his parents were farming people, brought him up. As a young man he came to Australia (about 1860) and earned a living working for a farmer in Victoria for a short time.
Any information anyone can provide would be much appreciated.

Waterford / Re: McGrath's of Waterford County

I am looking for information about Jeremiah McGrath of Waterford who migrated to Australia around 1860. Jeremiah McGrath was the only child (born 1840) of (possibly) Lawrence, and his mother's name before her marriage had been Margaret Lamb (Jeremiah's parents). They were farmers who lived in Waterford, Ireland and died when Jeremiah was very young, probably about three years old. An aunt and uncle, who like his parents were farming people, brought him up. As a young man he came to Australia (about 1860) and earned a living working for a farmer in Victoria for a short time.
Beyond this we have no information about Jeremiah other than of his time in Australia.
Can anyone add to the story?

Debra,
Thanks for the reply. My concern was that my William and the William of the Elsenham Gang are indeed one and the same person. The evidence indicates that they were and before I announce it to others of the family I would like to be sure. Do we know absolutely that the Elsenham Gang William was transported on the Tottenham? This would just about seal it for me.

Thanks so much for the added information. My dilemma now is how do I establish whether my William Welch is indeed the same person as William Welsh of the Elsenham Gang? As far as I have been able to establish there were at least six convicts named William Welch who were transported to NSW.

Yes, they are the correct couple and I have now found the names of their 11 children, the last being Phoebe in 1846. Would love to know details of who she came to Aust with etc.

Hi, born in Stenbug is what I meant but got this info from my late Dad. Don't know anything about Stenbug or who Elizabeth came here with. She married William Richard WELCH which probably accounts for the marriage certificate.

Looking for any information about his family (parents, siblings etc). He was transported for supposedly participating in the 1798 Irish Rebellion. However, the revolt was launched, and suppressed, in May, 1798, and the date of John's conviction was recorded as being a month earlier, in April 1798 when he was about 38 (?) and was sentenced  in  Dublin for a  term of  seven  years. However, it is possible he was involved in the preliminary skirmishes which preceded the outbreak of full-scale rebellion. He sailed on the Minerva, a vessel noted as carrying Irish rebels, which after leaving Cork in August 1799, arrived in Sydney on January 11, 1800. We know a lot about him after he arrived as a convict but would love to know more about his "Irish" days.

Hi. Does anyone have any information about Jeremiah whose parents were Lawrence and Margaret (Lamb). They died around 1846-8 and Jeremiah was brought up by an Aunt and Uncle. Came to Australia in the gold rush days around 1860. I do not have much more to go on.
