Inverness / Offering Lookups - Carr Bridge/Carrbridge cemetery
« on: Thursday 22 September 05 17:19 BST (UK)  »
Carr Bridge / Carrbridge cemetery

Carr Bridge is fairly close to Aviemore in Strathspey in the Highlands of Scotland.

my husband and i have been recording the MIs there over the last few months and have most of them now in black and white .. no website.

i'm still working on the index, but i'm willing to do lookups for anyone that requires it.

another month or two .. probably nearer two,  should see it all done and deposited with the Highland Family History Society and a copy including photos of all stones will be with the Inverness Public Library genealogy section

i plan eventually to get it all written to cd.

Midlothian / Elizabeth Piper Lumsden, b.c.1824, Edinburgh
« on: Thursday 22 September 05 17:04 BST (UK)  »
Elizabeth Piper Lumsden, b.c.1824, Edinburgh

i've been looking for this birth everywhere.   she's my grt grt grandmother and being very shy about coming forward :-/

her parents are
John Lumsden, writer [soliciter] and Innkeeper
Mary Gatehouse

they married 18 May 1823 St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, MLN; OPR 128016;
and at teh time of hteir marriage were living at 1 Catherine St, Edinburgh

and although their daughter was born during hte following year[ish] i can find no record of her at all .. not even on scotland's people :-(   i've searched right back from the time of her parents marriage, incase she was in a hurry to be born, up untill about a year prior to the arrival her younger brother born  7 May 1826.  he was born in Berwick, but Elizabeth claims in her census to have been b. in Edinburgh.   earlier censuses just say Scotland

after tons of searching, i've come up with these 2 references
OPR 6852  St Cuthbert’s
OPR 6852 /33  B 1820-26 with index

the chances are she's in htere.  if the indexed one means there's an alphabetical section for tracking down the baptisms that's great and maybe SKS would be kind enough to access to it for me.  :-)

if htere is no index, then it would be totally unrealistic for anyone to attempt to  plough through a couple of years of baptisms and i'd not expect it.

thankyou for your time

Argyllshire / 1792 survey - Duke of Argyle's Estate.
« on: Thursday 22 September 05 16:42 BST (UK)  »
i noted with interest in a post that John McSporran, see url below,  had managed to access the 1792 survey of hte Duke of Argyle's estate.

can anyone tell me if this is available on-line, or, how does one go about accessing it .. even hte slow-slog way?

i'm researching McShannons / McShenoigs etc and would love to have a deco at it and see if any of ours are there.

thanks for your time

Midlothian / 1841 & 1851 census Piper family - COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 21 September 05 23:19 BST (UK)  »
i'd be really grateful if SKS has hte time and resources to find my Piper family in hte 1841 and 1851 Edinburgh censuses

i've inluded what i know of hteir addresses and ages

Mary Piper, widow, b. out of county,  independent i reckon.
she must be at least 60yrs of age although 1841 may show her as younger
address:  Mrs John Piper, of East Craigs, 8 Windsor St. (Calton hill / Greenside neighbourhood) [PO Annual Directory of Edinburgh 1841-42]

i've tried http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl  1841 but neither she nor son John are listed .. so far.  her son Edward and hteir family are and i have their 1841.

1841   John Piper jun., 2 Windsor St  Edinburgh [PO Dir.1841-42].  no idea of his age :-/
he may be married with children.  i'd be delighted to fnd out :-)
.................
1851
Mary Piper again,  i imagine she will be at teh same address.  born England,  independent i reckon.
+
1851
Edward Piper b.c.1802 England; Mail Coach Contractor
Charlotte, wife, b.c.1810 England
known chldren all born Edinburgh:
Fanny / Frances c.20; Charlotte c.19; Mary c.17; Elizabeth c.16; Lucy c.14; [unknown other children in here]; Edward c.6; William c.5; Alice 1-2yrs;
by 1845 they're listed in hte PO Dir. at 2 Brandon St Edinburgh (Stockbridge neighbourhood i think) with a business address
Piper & Co., Royal Mail Coach office, 1 Catherine st. Edn.

thankyou for having ht patience to read through this :-)
and thanks again in advance for any time you can find to look these up for me

hi folks, I’d really appreciate some help with my BEAVIS family over the earlier censuses.  I’ve included as much info as possible including LON directory entries for the relevant eras, complete with  addresses, in the hope that it makes the job of SKS easier and quicker.   So far, in the later censuses anyway, I haven’t found much variation on how this family spells BEAVIS, and all known Directory entries confirms this spelling, but I’m keeping an open mind on how it may have been spelt in earlier years.

1841 would hopefully contain some or most of these + perhaps a child or two more
address found in 1841 PO Directory is 9 Cornwall Rd, Lambeth,
WILLIAM BEAVIS head, b.? poss. London, cheesemonger ;
Wife’s name poss ANN
Some known children
EDWIN chr.1825 Lambeth LON [may also be listed as EDWARD]
JAMES chr.1826 Lambeth
ALFRED chr.1834 Lambeth
ROBERT chr.1834 Lambeth
There are other BEAVISes in the directory .. John, Benjamin, William .. but I’m not sure of their relationship or even if there is one.
[Cornwall Rd, in Dir. is shown as being from Commercial Rd >> Stamford st. whereas Leigh’s street index gives Blackfriars Rd.  they’re possibly all part of the one.  I don’t know.]

1851 census some, at least, of the sons had left the family fold and the closest I can get to them is the 1852 LON directory.

the 1852 PO London Commercial & Professional Dir. several Beavis Cheesemongers are listed:
WM BEAVIS, cheesemonger, 9 Cornwall Rd, Stamford St.;
EDWIN  BEAVIS, cheesemonger, 32 Gtr Prescott St,  [nr or on Goodman’s fields - ‘Leigh’s street index]
ALFRED BEAVIS, cheesemonger, 7½ Grt Trinity Lane, City  [nr or on Bread st - ‘Leigh’s street index]

1851
JAMES BEAVIS, b.c.1826 Lambeth, LON cheesemonger, 18 Shoemaker row, Blackfriars
JANE BEAVIS, wife, b.c.1829  Bradninch, Cullompton DEV
[their address corresponds with his on their marriage lines]
they could be living with other members of their family.   they  may not hav a kid of hteir own yet as htey only married in the January ..

By 1861 this family would, i imagine, consist of
JAMES BEAVIS  c.42yrs; cheesemonger or grocer
JANE BEAVIS c.32yrs  b. DEV
Children:
?child b.c.1852
James b.1854 b. St Anne Blackfriars [although on subsequent censuses he’s LON city or Lambeth SRY
? Robert b.c.?1856 City i htink
Francis b.c.1858 Lambeth SRY
Ernest b.1860  Lambeth SRY
Walter b.c.1861/62 Lambeth SRY

1871 James and Jane are in Loughboro Place PRO ref: RG 10 631; 11 Loughboro Pl., Lambeth
I have this census
The children are all down as being born in Lambeth and in the 1881 all born Brixton!

in the PO LON Dir 1882 Comm & Prof. page 733, an
an EDWARD Beavis appears as a Cheesemonger, 1 Church St, Rotherhithe LON SE
I’m sure he’s our  EDWIN, son of WILLIAM at the top.  I found him listed as EDWIN in hte  1881  RG11 piece 0581/105 pg16 with the same Rotherhithe address.  But ..  he says his place of birth is Somerstown, MDX and I have him as being chr. in Christ Church, Southwark LON ... maybe that's the same place, i'm totally unfamiliar with the area .. and folk did sometimes get their pale of origin, and even age, wrong on  these censuses! as i'm sure everyone her has discovered ;-)

Business dir of LON 1884 show ALFRED being a grocer in Sparrow Corner, Minories E,  and he shows up in the 1881 as a 50 yr old widower.  Age a year or two out, but it may be him.

I really need to find them all on the earlier censuses to be more sure of these later ones.  I’d really appreciate help with these lookups
Thankyou very much in advance for your time and effort :-)
