Hi Allan,

Further to your request -- I came across a Margaret BROWNRIDGE today, in the 1841 Census of Glencairn.

Margaret was aged 19 years (b. in DFS circa 1820), and she lived in the Holmhead household of farmer Robert Austin, with whom she was employed as the ubiquitous agricultural labourer.

A quick check of LDS-IGI gave a Margaret BROWNRIDGE born 9 Jan 1820 in Glencairn.  Parents named Thomas BROWNRIDGE & Mary HARPER.

Perhaps this Margaret is your Thomas' sister...?

Cheers,

Shane

The 1841 Census of Glencairn has a Thomas BROWNRIDGE, age 17 (born circa 1824).  He was living at Blackstone Outhouse, and was employed as an agricultural labourer.  He was born in county.

There is also a Mary HANNAH, age 20 (born circa 1820) who was born out of county.  She was living in the "Crichan" household of farmer Alexander Kennedy and was employed as a "female servant".

Thomas BROWNRIDGE was born about 1824. He died before 1867.

Scotland / Request: Birth and/or Marriage Lookup
« on: Friday 07 October 05 19:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I was hoping someone could search the BIVR index for any children of Thomas McGAUCHIE & Margaret HUNTER.  At least two children (James and Mary) were born on either side of 1799, and I know one of them was born in Dunscore, DFS... but that's about it.

I'm curious about a Thomas McGAUCHIE born in Keir circa 1805 (he married a Janet Davies in Tynron in 1831), but have been unable to make a connection.

The greatest difficulty lies in the variant spellings of the surname McGAUCHIE.  I've seen everything from McKEACHIE and McKAUCHIE to McGACHIE and McGAHIE... and despite the wonders of soundex, one spelling dosen't necessarily lead to another.

The marriage of Mary McGAUCHIE to Andrew LAURIE has been impossible to find, too -- anywhere in Scotland!  The first of their children was born in Dunscore circa 1821 (when they were 20-25 years old), but I've found no compelling record of anything anywhere.

Thanks if you can help,

Shane

Hi Rick,

Thanks for pointing that out.  I feel a little embarrassed, actually... I got the marriage date (1 May 1842) from the LDS-IGI years ago -- something that slipped my notice while making the inquiry about 1841!

But it is nice to have multiple sources, so thanks again.

Cheers,

Shane

Hi Ron,

If you're looking for a specific individual who may have went down with the ship, try the Commonwealth War Graves Commission at http://www.cwgc.org.  A gg-uncle of mine was one of five who died when the S.S. Cymric was torpedoed by a German u-boat off the coast of Ireland in 1916, and I found details there.

I took information on the ship itself (and its sinking) from greatships.net -- try http://www.greatships.net/athenia.html.

Coincidentally, Athenia is the ship which took my g-grandfather to Canada when he emigrated from Scotland in 1926.  Let's hope I inherited his good sense of timing.

Cheers,

Shane

Hi Nell,

Thanks for the prompt report.  I didn't say where Jessie was born because that's one of the things I want to confirm (due to conflicting data).

I know that her husband Robert Lawson was dead by 1886, so this information looks promising -- looks like he died before 1881.

Sons' ages line up too, so this definitely looks like them!

Much appreciated,

Shane

Hi there,

I'm trying to locate the family of Robert & Jessie LAWSON.  Jessie was at 13 Church Street in 1871.  Three children were also present; husband Robert was absent.

Jessie would have been about 46 in 1881.  Children include Alexander, Robert, James and William.

Thanks in advance,

Shane

Dumfriesshire / Re: Glencrosh Farm
« on: Wednesday 05 October 05 20:03 BST (UK)  »

I am looking for ANY information on the Gibsons of Glencrosh farm or Estate in Glencairn parish.   The Gibsons were proprietors there, from the mid - 1600's -- about  1850.

Hi Lilias,

In 1841, the Glencrosh farm was occupied by the family of farmer Robert McMILLAN, who was also of independent means.  He was born outside of DFS, circa 1795.

There were no Gibsons present at Glencrosh for either the 1841 or the 1851 censuses of Glencairn.  Let me know if you'd like the names of the other occupants (most notably the McMillan family) during 1841.

Cheers,

Shane

DEATHS IN GRETNA, Dfs...

... 1866 BIRRELL, Adam 85 yrs married to Janet COULTHARD (parents George BIRRELL & Ann Birrell nee ABERCROMBIE)

It's just speculation, but I'm guessing that the above-mentioned George BIRRELL was born circa 1752 to Adam BIRRELL & Janet ROME.  (Adam & Janet were my 7g-grandparents.)

Again, it's just speculation -- but the Birrell and Coulthard families of Gretna were pretty close-knit, and the ages certainly match up.  If you're interested in any of these families, let me know what you think.

Cheers,

Shane
