Yorkshire (West Riding) / No trace of Kate Wormald -- now what??
« on: Friday 25 November 05 19:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Hoping someone can help me figure out this puzzle!

A Roland/Rowland Hill was married to xxx sometime between 1901 and 1905.

Family members have claimed that

* Rowland was from Pontefract
* Rowland died in Halifax Yorkshire circa 1943 aged about 63 (giving him  a birth year of 1880 plus or minus a few years) and is buried in "Illingworth"
* Rowland's wife was Kate (Rowland's grand-daughter told me this)
* Rowland's wife was Eliza Wormald (Rowland's daughter gave this info to someone else who gave it to me - not sure how accurately it ended up at my end)
*Rowland was Anglican

I have found Rowland in the 1901 census for Pontefract Park and Tanshelf, as a single man

I cannot find his marriage in the indexes online

I found the birth of one of his children in 1905 so sent for the certificate. It shows his wife as Kate Hill formerly Wormald

I was quite excited and immediately began a hunt for Kate Wormald in the 1901 census. I can find nothing that fits! I've tried Kate, Katie, Catherine, Katherine and other variations but nothing. The only woman who appears to be about the right age and in the right location is a Kate Wormald, nee Shaw -- and she is someone else's wife.

I am now starting to wonder -- would a woman put their former married name on a birth registration for their child or was it definitely always the maiden name?

Why can't I find Kate Wormald in ANY census from 1901 back?? The only ones I find are much older than Rowland, or already married.

Rowland's daughter said the family was from Pontefract but whether she meant just her father or her mother as well, I don't know.

Rowland's granddaughter born 1932 recalls visiting her grandmother Kate Hill (Wormald) in "Copley" but this may be no help at all to figuring out where Kate came from

Rowland and Kate lived in "Boothtown" after their marriage according to this same granddaughter

Just in case anyone recognizes some names -- here are the children of Rowland and Kate, from the memory of Rowland's granddaughter

--Dick/Richard Hill b 1905
--Susan Hill (twin to Dick) b 1905 m Jack Cameron
--Horace Hill b 1907 m. Minnie and buried with Rowland, also their son Royce
--Lillian Hill b 1912 m Jack Schulze
--Annie Joan (Joan) Hill m Kenneth Hilton
--Marjory Jean (Jean) Hill m twice - first to Charles xxx, from Wales, second to Max xxx, a German POW

Dunbartonshire / Newbie at Scottish Research! Need help McCOLL, BROWN, COLEMAN, WYLIE
« on: Friday 11 November 05 18:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm at a loss as to how to find my grandchildren's ancestry on their mother's side. She was born in Scotland and she's given me a 'tree' of sorts... all based on family memories, no documentation from them at all.

I've looked at some sites with Scottish records but I'm no further ahead. Can SKS help me if I give a few details?

I'll just start with one family -

Dennis McColl born about 1884 in Renton s/o Peter (no info on mother)

Dennis McColl md Margaret Brown d/o John (no info on mother) and had a daughter:

Sarah Stirling Brown McColl b: 03 Jul 1917 in Renton md Henry Coleman b: 18 Aug 1915 in Clydebank d: 27 Dec 1975 in Bonhill, Dunbartonshires/o  Henry Coleman & Marion Wylie

Sarah's siblings as per family recollections (no dates known for births etc):
    Dennis McColl
    Margaret (Peggy) McColl
    Kate McColl
    Helen (Ellie) McColl
    Mary McColl
   Janet (Jenny) McColl

Is this enough info for finding them in the 1901 census, and does anyone have access to that? Or is there something else I should be looking in?

I figure Henry Coleman and Marion Wylie might be in the 1901 census -- they were both born Renton but I don't know when. One son (Henry) was born 1915 but I don't know if he's the oldest, youngest, in the middle ---- :(

If anyone can guide me in the right direction or find anything on these lines, you're a miracle worker and I'm forever grateful. Thanks!

Meath / Bishop O Beirne Parish Records online
« on: Wednesday 09 November 05 23:07 GMT (UK)  »
Saw this on a mailing list and thought Meath researchers would be interested - the original poster gave me permission to put it here

From (*)

The Meath Ireland I.G.P. web site has a new look and tons of new data.
It now has all the Bishop O Beirne Parish Records online.

In 1802 Bishop Thomas Lewis O'Beirne gave instructions to
his registrars to obtain from the clergy accurate written
lists of their parishioners, and with particulars of the
families. Some answered him immediately others took their
time and it was compiled over several years. The quality of
the returns varies immensely, and the surviving list now
available actually cover fifty percent of the parishes at
the given time

This is a fantastic database for people looking for
ancestors in Meath. If you want to take a look go to.

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / 1841 census Wouldham kent lookup SIMPSON
« on: Wednesday 09 November 05 14:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I'm hoping for a lookup in the 1841 census of Wouldham Kent.

My g-g-g-grandpa Charles SIMPSON should be there with wife Elizabeth (Whibley)

In the  1851 census for Wouldham he is found as age 51 along with wife Elizabeth also 51, and 2 of his children - George 19 and David 7. The Registration district is  Malling  and Sub Reg Dist is
 Aylesford

Charles Simpson was born in Hailsham, E. Sussex, his wife Elizabeth Whibley in Marden Kent

CHildren I expect (hope!) to find in the 1841 census include my g-g-grandpa Charles Henry Simpson born 1829 in Wouldham as well as siblings Emily, George, Mary Ann, and possibly William Thorpe SIMPSON

The children of Charles & Elizabeth that I know of are:

Charlotte Simpson   b: 1825 in Wouldham   d: 1826 in Wouldham

Emily Simpson   b: 1826 in Wouldham d: 1848 in Wouldham,

Charles Henry Simpson   b: 1829 in Wouldham d: 1874 in Throwley, Kent (my g g grandpa)
George Simpson   b: 1832   Wouldham

Mary Ann Simpson    b 1835 Wouldham

Sarah Simpson   b: 1837 in Wouldham   d: 1837 in Wouldham,

Ellen Julia Simpson   b: 1839 in Wouldham   d: 1839 in Wouldham

Francis Simpson   b: 1840 in Wouldham   d: 1840 in Wouldham,

William Thorpe Simpson   b:  1841 in Wouldham   d: 1842 in Wouldham,
David Simpson   b: 1843 in Wouldham   d: 1892 in Wouldham

It's possible that Charles parents Nathaniel & Ann (Latcham) SIMPSON are also in Wouldham in 1841

Thanks for any help!

Armed Forces / Army Barracks in Gillingham, Chatham??
« on: Wednesday 09 November 05 14:09 GMT (UK)  »
I have found my ancestor Charles Henry Simpson born 1829 in Wouldham Kent, living in a barracks of some sort in Chatham Kent in 1851 census.  The exact location is

                                    District 1u, Gillingham, Chatham, Kent

He is listed as "Private in Army" and is with dozens and dozens of other men listed with various such titles. Some say "Royal Army". Even going back to the first page of this census (and there are dozens of such pages) it does not provide the name of the barracks or give me any clues as to what army or military regiment my Charles was in.

Can anyone who is more familiar with these military bases shed light on this?

Thank you!

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / 1841 lookup request MARTIN in Southwold
« on: Sunday 30 October 05 12:49 GMT (UK)  »
I just found out a few weeks ago that my husband is descended from Richard Rufus Boniwell and Harriet through daughter Eliza (10 weeks in 1841). Last night I found Harriet's maiden name (MARTIN) and her father and mother - James MARTIN & Lydia uknown.

Richard Rufus Boniwell may have been a Jr so his father is either Richard or Rufus I think. I don't have access to 1841 census but the families (BONIWELL and MARTIN) were in Southwold from at least 1810.

I'd love a lookup for JAMES & LYDIA MARTIN in Southwold in 1841 if that's possible.  I don't know when James MARTIN was born but he died Nov. 1842 in Southwold so he will be on that 1841 census.

His wife Lydia was born circa 1781 and still alive well past 1841. I don't know all their children but I have three - Harriet (my husband's line, m Richard R BONIWELL ) b ca 1811, Lydia b ca 1815 (m James OLDRING) and William b ca 1818. I suspect there were others. They owned the Red Lion Inn in Southwold.

I'm also interested in ANY Boniwell (Bonwell, Bonewell) families living in Southwold in 1841, as I think my Richard Rufus' father was still alive then. And of course he may have had brothers.

I have both families in 1851. Richard Boniwell was living at Long Island Cliff in 1841 and 1851. Lydia MARTIN, widow of James was in 1851 census Southwold  Suffolk at 20 South Green

Thanks for any help!

Hello,

Crossing my fingers I can get a lookup in 1841 and 1851 census records for the following:

John Metcalf[e] born about 1831 Bradford, Yorkshire, Eng -- I'd like to find him on the 1841 and 1851 census to find out his parents. He's in Halifax YKS in 1861, married to Martha Schofield. Martha's another one I need help with

They all tie in to my Dewhirst/Dewhurst and Horner families -- Martha Schofield was born about 1830 in Halifax and her mother's name was Sarah.  I think Martha had a sister Hannah. I need her in the 1841 census to find out her father's name and any other info on the family.

Martha Schofield m. John Metcalf[e] about 1850 and had 8 children before she died around 1871.  In the 1851 census she might be married to John with a son Alfred Metcalf[e]

Thanks!
