Kincardineshire / Re: Isles John Burness aka 'Isles' and 'Bervonian' 1927 - 2010

Just to thank everyone for their wonderful postings & private messages about Isles which are much appreciated.

His funeral at Bervie (which was very well attended) just captured the spirit of the man & certainly was a celebration of his life.

He was a keen angler, cyclist & local historian & everything he did was done with the utmost enthusiasm.

This picture of him when he was doing his national service at Carnwath Barracks just captures the very essence of him.

Quaker Family History / Quaker & other Non Conformist Ancestors
« on: Sunday 13 February 11 07:27 GMT (UK)  »
The new Family Search website www.FamilySearch.org makes it far easier to trace Quaker ancestors & other Non Conformist baptisms & burials.  I was mainly interested in Lothersdale & already had details of some Quaker burials in Lothersdale which were recorded in the register at Settle such as:-

William Slater of Lothersdale in the Parish of Carlton and County of York died the 2nd and was buried the 5th of the 8th Month 1759 in the Burying Place of the Friends at Lothersdale aforesaid.

I keyed in just Lothersdale & was amazed at the wealth of burial entries that came up. I have details of about 250 burials but have yet to record details of all baptisms but can easily provide details of burials for those interested.

The website also provides Non Conformist records such as the primitive Methodist baptisms at Whittinghall Fold in Lothersdale.  I have full details of baptisms from 1815 to 1837 which can also be provided eg:-

Alice daughter of Peter & Jane Hartley born 10 July 1819 and baptised 10 May 1819 - Oakcliff, Lothersdale. Occupation of father - weaver

The Duckworths of Lothersdale were Quakers & details of baptisms & burials in Lothersdale were recorded at Settle.  They can be found at the new website www.FamilySearch.org if you just key in the name Duckworth & Lothersdale.  Some of the entries are incorrect saying that they were born at Settle & the residence is Lothersdale - only the register was at Settle.

David Duckworth married Mary King at St Mary Carleton in Craven on 3 Sep 1798 and they had the following children:-
David  born 2 Mar 1799 Lothersdale
Hannah born 12 Nov 1801 Lothersdale
Jonathan born 25 Sep 1804 Lothersdale
Moses born 31 Jan 1807 Lothersdale
Aaron born 6 Jul 1809 Lothersdale
Ezra born 21 Feb 1815 Lothersdale
Rebecca born 20 Apr 1817 Lothersdale
Amos born 20 Aug 1819 Lothersdale

David Duckworth married Anne Harrison at St Andrew, Kildwick on 20 Aug 1820
Jonathan Duckworth married Ann Walton at St Mary, Carleton on 22 Aug 1824
Aaron Duckworth married Ellen Brown
Ezra Duckworth married Jane Brown at St Bartholomew, Colne on 6 Jan 1834
Rebecca Duckworth married Robert Teal at St Mary, Carleton on 19 Aug 1833

Hope this helps

Isles Burness, who lived most of his life in Inverbervie, & was a passionate genealogist & local historian died on 28th December 2010.

He will be sadly missed by those friends he made when answering Kincardineshire queries.
